Trader seeks justice after alleged assault by police officer

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A 39-year-old trader from Santhe in Kasungu district,Ivy Selemani is seeking justice after a police officer allegedly assaulted her, causing a lip injury.

According to Selemani, on February 26th of this year, she went to deliver a cake to a neighbour of police officer Sapenda Chabwera at the Santhe police station.

Chabwera allegedly started beating her and her child, accusing them of gossiping about his family.

“He beat me severely, injuring my upper lip.

“Even though I received medical treatment, I still experience pain in my upper teeth and throat because he also strangled me,” said Selemani.

Mchinji police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho has confirmed the incident saying an investigation is underway.

Meanwhile,Braxton Banda, chairperson of non-governmental organizations in the district,Braxton Banda,has expressed concern about the police officer’s actions, calling the alleged assault on Selemani a “tragedy.”

He has vowed to ensure the case reaches court and that justice is served.
