Trio northern political parties form alliance ahead of September 16 polls

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Leaders of the three political parties from the Northern Region, Khumbo Kachali of Freedom Party (FP), Frank Mwenifumbo of National Development Party (NDP ) and Victor Madhlopa of Solidarity Alliance (SA) have formed up an electoral alliance ahead of the September 16 general elections whose leader is to be unveiled soon.

The alliance dubbed as “Northern Electoral Alliance” was unveiled during a joint political rally at Chibavi ground in Mzuzu on Sunday June 22,2025.

Kachali told the gathering that Malawi needs a new leader who can turn around the economic misfortune which is now an endemic disease.

He singled out high prices of fertilizer as a chief barrier to most poor farmers in their agricultural production.

Kachali since urged Malawians to give them a chance of running the government on September 16 adding that they have the ability to run the government smoothly.

On an unending fuel crisis, the FP leader said the problem symbolizes more deeper problems ahead under the current government.

Taking his turn, Madhlopa claimed that Malawi is falling to develop because of rampant theft of public resources and corruption in the government.

He also criticized and described the public agriculture subsidy program now dubbed, Affordable Input Program (AIP), as an unsustainable approach to ending persistent hunger, as only few farmers benefit.

Madhlopa therefore, asked people to rally behind their alliances which is still holding discussions in regard to their front runner in the presidential race.

He added that unity and adopting a federal system of government is a practical solution to address needs of all the regions.

Echoeing the same, Mwenefumbo called on opposition parties in the country to unite under one candidate for the elections.

He blamed the Tonse Alliance’s failure on stubbornness and personal interests but expressed optimism that a new alliance could succeed.

Mwenefumbo accused the current government of neglecting the Northern Region, as promised development projects remain undelivered.
