LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)– Trocaire, Malawi’s developmental partner implored Malawian farmers to embrace agroecology that improves soil fertility for maximum production.
Agroecology is a practice that seeks redesigning food systems from the farm to the table with a goal of achieving ecological, economic and social sustainability.
The practice promotes crop rotation, application of green manures, use of polycultures, agroforestry and among others.
This however needs to be embraced in Malawi as it enhances soil health through mulches and cover crops and using natural plant-insect and plant-plant interactions to control weeds and pest.
Through the recent National Symposium on Agroecology; Transforming societies through sustainable food systems which Trocaire organized in the capital Lilongwe farmers, agricultural experts demonstrated how beneficial the practice is.
For instance, Vele Mumba, Dedza lead farmer testified how agroecology has improved soil for maximum production.
Mumba told the gathering that the technology has achieved the four properties including production, sustainability, stability and equitability.
Ireland Ambassador to Malawi Gerry Cunningham who graced the symposium urged farmers to venture into the practice that does not require organic fertilizer though he noted that notion takes time to realize benefits.
Echoing on the same, Jeannette Wijnats, Country Director Trocaire Malawi said the organization will do more implore farmers to adopt the practice.
The symposium attracted local and international experts in agriculture, farmers, researchers to share experiences on how agroecology is fairing in others areas.
