BLANTYRE (Maravi Post)—Police in Blantyre have on Tuesday arrested two officers on suspicion that they aided a suspect to escape in custody at Soche Police Station in the commercial city of Blantyre.According to our internal source, the two officers are Sub Inspector Steven Chikwatu of 47 years from Namulutcha village and Sergeant Emmanuel Musasa 35 of Kabunthu Mabuka village both in Mulanje district.

Report indicates that the two were on duty during the day the suspect escaped.

Our source further disclosed that the escapee Jonathan Kayira is one of the notorious thieves in the country.

“The escapee was arrested Sunday on suspicion that he stole a motor vehicle and was expected to appear before the court this week,” said our source.

“However, after put in custody the two police officers connive with the suspect to escape. The way the suspect escaped is not normal hence the arrest of two,” they added.

The suspect is suspected to have escaped around 11 pm.

According to our source, the two officers are now in the custody at Blantyre police station for further investigation.

This comes amid the escape of four criminals at Maula Prison who believed to be aided by their counterparts.

It is also reported that senior officers at the prison have been transferred to the districts over the development.
