UITM, PP, AFORD, Tikonze electoral alliance deal sealed

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)– As earlier reported today, Friday, February 1, that party leaders of four political parties taking part in the May 21 tripartite elections were behind closed doors stretching out a coalition to unseat incumbent DPP President Peter Mutharika, finally the deal has been sealed.


According information available to The Maravi Post parties into coalition including Saulos Chilima’s United Transformation Movemfnt (UTM), former President Joyce Banda’s People’s Party, Enoch Chihana’s  Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and Tikonze.

This confirms according pulling out of Tikonze Alliance President Dr. Cassim Chilumpha for  the forthcoming May 21 tripartite election following a gland coalition meeting held today in the capital Lilongwe.

Chilumpha disclosed that has decided to Partner with the United Transformation Movement (UTM) under Dr. Saulos Chilima.

“As you are aware, 21 May is fast approaching. The political arena is heated up now. In view of this I would like to announce that I have reversed my decision to compete for the presidency of this country on 21 May, 2019. Furthermore, more let me take this opportunity to announce that Tikonze Alliance has decided to Partner with the United Transformation Movement.

“To all my followers, may you give all the support that you would have given me to Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and the UTM,” said Chilumpha.

On other side opposition People’s Party (PP) and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) have joined forces with UTM in what can be described as a gland coalition.

People Party (PP)’s National Publicity Secretary Ackson Kalaile Banda confirmed saying “Discussions between the Peoples Party and other political parties pertaining an electoral alliance have reached final stages.

“The issue was tabled at National Executive Committee meeting at which members gave their views on the same. A major consensus reached at that forum was that the party should work with other parties in the run up to the May 2019 polls”, reads Banda’s facebook wall.


He adds, “An official communication will be made within the next 48 hours to all relevant stakeholders including the media. Exhaustive details of the political arrangement going forward shall be made available through the said communication.

“In the absence of that official communication, members of the media are asked to bear with us as we cannot divulge any information that has not been authorized by the national executive committee and our working partners”.

Meanwhile it is not known as to who will be the Vice President of the alleged coalition particularly for a runningmate for May 21 polls..
