LILONGWE (Maravipost)–United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark is expected to hold high levels discussions with Malawi government officials and Members of Parliament on key development issues in the country.
Clark, who is also Chairperson of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG)—a committee consisting of heads of all UN agencies, funds, programmes and departments working on development issues, will travel to Malawi for a three day visit from Wednesday 17 June to Friday 19 June 2015.
Ms. Clark, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, will also hold discussions with various stakeholders on the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs will be considered for adoption by the UN General Assembly in New York in September this year to succeed the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs).
Malawi is one of 50 countries which were selected to conduct national consultations on priorities and means of implementation for the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
On Thursday, Ms. Clark will meet President Peter Mutharika in Lilongwe to discuss the UN’s support towards critical reform processes, inclusive growth, the SDGs and the national development planning process.
During the visit, Ms. Clark will also participate in the launch of the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report on Malawi floods at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) and hold a Public Lecture with Parliamentarians and CSOs on SDGs at the Parliament Building on Thursday.
Further, she will participate in discussions on the economic vision for Malawi’s transformation with Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Hon. Goodall Gondwe, UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) Chief Economist Stefan Dercon, Head of DfID in Malawi Ms. Jen Marshall, UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Mia Seppo and other stakeholders.
This is the third visit to Malawi by the UNDP after she also visited the country in October 2012 on an official country visit and in July 2013 for the Lancet Commission meeting.
