BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost )-University of Malawi (UNIMA) School of Law, Economics, and Government Executive Dean, Happy Kayuni, has emphasized the importance of economic literature in sparking thought-provoking discussions and inspiring innovative solutions.

Speaking at the launch of ‘The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy’ at UNIMA in Zomba, Kayuni highlighted the value of foundational economic knowledge in policy evaluation.

“Books provide a critical framework for analyzing situations and making informed decisions, both personally and professionally,” he said.

On his part, one of the book’s editors, Hope Chavula said the comprehensive volume covers five key areas of political economy and development in Malawi, macroeconomic policy environment, social development and growth, agriculture as a growth driver, and industrialization and structural transformation.

He emphasized that the book advocates for Malawi to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost its economy.

“To develop, Malawi needs to implement transformative social policies, drive agricultural development, and prioritize industrialization,”said Chavula.

The book reviewer at the launch, Felix Lombe praised the book’s content, noting its relevance to scholars, policymakers, researchers, and others.

The book was edited by a team including Professor Harold Ngalawa, Associate Professor Boniface Dulani, and Thomas Chataghalala Munthali, alongside Chavula.
