UNIMA Law Students Shine in Moot Court Competition

By Jones Gadama

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) School of Law, Economics, and Government recently hosted the final of the Savjani moot court competition, showcasing the exceptional skills of law students.

High Court Judge Justice Zione Ntaba, who attended the event, expressed admiration for the skills displayed by the students, noting that these skills are also evident when they join the bar.

Justice Ntaba’s comments come in response to criticisms about the questionable low performance of some law graduates.

However, she emphasized that about three-quarters of law students who practice after school continue to demonstrate the skills developed during their studies.

This suggests that the training and mentorship provided by UNIMA’s law school are effective in preparing students for the demands of the legal profession.

The Savjani moot court competition is designed to enhance the skills of law students, and the event’s sponsor, Mayamiko Madula, expressed satisfaction that their primary goal is being achieved.

Madula, a private lawyer, highlighted the importance of practical experience in legal education, which the competition provides.

One of the winners, Ntchindi Chiyamwaka, expressed gratitude to the sponsors, saying that the moot court competition provided real experience with court case procedures and feelings.

The competition allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated court setting, developing their advocacy, research, and critical thinking skills.

The event demonstrates UNIMA’s commitment to providing high-quality legal education that prepares students for the demands of the legal profession.

The university’s law school is dedicated to producing graduates who are well-equipped to excel in their careers.

The Savjani moot court competition is a valuable experience for UNIMA law students, providing them with practical skills and knowledge that will serve them well in their future careers.

The event’s success is a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence in legal education.
