LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-UTM leader Dr Dalitso Kabambe has come clearly urging President Lazarus Chakwera and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to concede defeat during the September 16 polls.
Wring on his Facebook page, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor is optimistic of winning the elections for better Malawi.
“After ruling Malawi with an iron fist for 31 years, the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, contested the 1994 elections and lost, probably, MCP’s first participation in a proper election. The will of Malawians prevailed, and Kamuzu honourably accepted defeat. Malawi moved on to change in peace.
“In 2014, after losing the presidential race, former President Dr. Joyce Banda conceded defeat, and Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika took over. Malawi moved on to change in peace,” reads his post in part.
UTM leader adds, “In 2020, after losing the court-sanctioned fresh presidential election, APM respected the people’s will. Again, Malawi moved on to change peacefully.
“With just 71 days to the next elections, Botswana’s President has offered timely advice to Lazarus Chakwera’s administration: a reminder that ruling parties can lose, have lost before, and MCP also lost power before, and so, as a sitting President, he must be ready to concede when voters decide against him”.
Dr Kabambe optimistic, “In 2024, Afrobarometer, a respected research institution, released a report showing that 89 out of every 100 Malawians believe the country is headed in the wrong direction—an overwhelming indictment of the Chakwera administration, call it a fallout of grace of the people.
“Now, with the economy in a serious crisis, political violence rising, corruption worsening, and executive arrogance deepening, Malawians are likely to reject another five years of Chakwera’s “see nothing, do nothing” leadership”.
UTM leader echoes, “That is why we echo Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko: Lazarus Chakwera must be ready to concede defeat this September—and let Malawi move on to change in peace.
“This change is inevitable , Malawians are dying for change and are ready to give it all for that change. Dr. Chakwera, the message is simple, prepare to exit in peace for change is here”.
Dr Kabambe has intestified campaign trail across the country with message of economic recovery ahead of September 16 polls.
