UTM leader Kabambe denies assault allegations

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-UTM president Dr Dalitso Kabambe has denied allegations that his security personnel assaulted guards during his visit to Chinkhoma tobacco auction floors.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Kabambe described the claims as false, citing the presence of journalists who witnessed the event.

The UTM leader emphasized the importance of verifying facts before making public statements.

He also expressed concerns about the shrinking democratic space for opposition parties, highlighting alleged restrictions on UTM’s activities at Unima and Mzuzu University.

The former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM ) Governor further called for tobacco pricing reform mechanism and exchange rate system in the country.

Dr Kabambe claimed that the current system exploits farmers, citing the practice of selling tobacco in US dollars while paying farmers in kwacha at a low exchange rate.

The UTM president also accused the current RBM Governor for failing to secure foreign exchange and called for his immediate resignation.

He stated that if he takes government in the September 16 elections, foreign currency will no longer be scarce in the country.

Kabambe was elected the UTM president at the party’s elective convention held on November 17, 2024.
