“We refuse to be undressed, beaten for political participation”-Malawian women denounce violence

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- The country’s group of women drawn from main political parties “Cross Party Women in Politics” on Tuesday stood together in denouncing political violence recently escalating a head of May 21 polls.

The conference attracted women from political parties including UTM Party, United Democratic Front (UDF), Peoples Party (PP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and independent.

Not only that Parliamentary Committee on women caucus and 50:50 campaign team joined the condemnation of political violence especially against women.

The grouping told the news conference that the country’s leadership must immediate arrest the culprits to book.

This comes barely a  few days after UTM party woman aspirant Veronica in Mangochi was stripped naked by suspected Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets.

Veronica confessed  during the media briefing that following the ordeal, she lost her marriage that is now a shame to her community.

Therefore the grouping demanded; “Immediate arrest of the delinquents that are seen in the numerous videos perpetuating political violence; clear record mechanism and time line plus report back mechanism on every political violence case”.

The women however disclosed that will hold a marching and deliver a petition to President Peter Mutharika, Inspector General of Police (IG), The Ombudsman and Human Rights Commission within the next seven days.

So, far the police are yet to arrest all recent political violence perpetrators.
