Zomba Mountain Fun Walk & Hike Set to Promote Conservation and Community Engagement

By Jones Gadama

The Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in partnership with the Friends of Mulunguzi Dam and Southern Region Water Board is organizing the Zomba Mountain Fun Walk & Hike, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025.

The event aims to raise awareness and support for the conservation of Mulunguzi Dam and Zomba Mountain, two of Malawi’s key ecological treasures.

The 6.6km hike from Gymkhana Club to Mulunguzi Dam atop the majestic Zomba Mountain promises a unique blend of fitness, live music, community engagement, networking, and environmental advocacy. Part of the proceeds will go towards supporting the setting up of PRSM secretariat.

PRSM President Benson Linje says the initiative has already received strong backing from the public.

“We are excited by the growing interest and support from individuals, companies, and community groups,” he said. “What’s truly inspiring is that even those who may not be able to hike are sponsoring teams, especially schools and youth groups, to participate on their behalf,” he added.

The event will feature a live music performance by Millennium Sound Checks, a Zomba-based live band known for their old-school flair.

Participants can also look forward to food and braai servings, open bars, a kids’ zone, and corporate exhibitions at the summit.

William Assan Jalesi, Chairperson of Friends of Mulunguzi Dam, emphasized the broader impact of the event on the conservation of the Mulunguzi Dam and Zomba Mountain.

“Mulunguzi Dam is not just an infrastructure asset, it is a lifeline for the city and an ecological gem,” he said.

To make it easier for participants outside Zomba to attend, transport from Lilongwe is available at a fee, and organizers are exploring similar arrangements from Blantyre.

Security will be provided, and shuttle transport will be available to ferry participants from the summit back to Gymkhana Club after the event.

PRSM and its partners are urging Malawians to take this opportunity to “Walk and Hike for change, for conservation, and for a stronger Malawi.”
