LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police Service (MPS) at Kawale station in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 22-year-old former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier for defrauding eight job seekers cash amounting to MK4,337,000.
The suspected identified as, Rodrick Phiri, who was dismissed in May this year is alleged to have collected the money from eight people, promising them recruitment into the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) as soldiers.
According to Kawale Police spokesperson Sergeant Prisca Kuyere Mtikwa, one of the victims Francisco Matafale reported that Phiri approached his wife so that he could assist them people to get recruited, following which Matafale shared the news to his other friends who immediately sent money as demanded by the suspect.
Mtikwa says having become suspicious of Phiri’s movements and statements, the victims reported to Kamuzu Barracks Military Police who arrested him and handed him to police.
The suspect Phiri hails from Njolomole Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mavwele in Mchinji district.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer a theft by trick charge.
