LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The privately owned Champion Stadium in Mponela, Dowa, is set to undergo a major facelift by the end of April 2025, according to its owner, Msaiwale Kavina.
Kavina, who recently visited South Africa, said he drew inspiration from the modern sports facilities in the country.
“We have purchased 15,000 chairs, which will be installed at the stadium. As we prepare to host international matches, elite league games, and national cup fixtures, we need to enhance the facility’s outlook,” he stated.
He added, “I visited several stadiums in South Africa, including Mamelodi Sundowns FC’s home ground, and I have taken notes on their designs and management.”
Kavina emphasized the importance of providing a comfortable experience for fans.
“We want the sports fraternity to enjoy watching games at the stadium. I thank FAM and SULOM for approving the facility to host the 2025 season matches.
“I urge fans to attend in large numbers and support their teams peacefully. I also appeal to them to refrain from vandalizing the facility during games,” he added.
Champion Stadium has been constructed with a modern design, featuring fully covered stands to shield spectators from sun and rain.
Several teams have already started using the stadium for pre-season matches.
Last week, Creck Sporting Club defeated MAFCO Soldiers 4-1.
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, Blantyre giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC will face Kamuzu Barracks FC at the venue.
Looking ahead, in September, the stadium will host a match between Malawi football legends and Bafana Bafana legends.
This follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between Kavina and the Football Legends Association.
