LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police Service at Lilongwe Station are keeping in custody one of the country’s upcoming filmmakers Tumpe Mtaya, popularity known as Phwedo for allegedly defiling a 15 year old girl at Kawale in the city.
Central West Region police publicist Foster Benjamin has confirmed the arrest of Phwedo who started committing the crime in February this year.
The police publicist Benjamin disclosed that the suspect has been sleeping with the minor on a number of occasions since February that she got tired.
Benjamin revealed that Phwedo and the victim met at a certain artist event in Lilongwe on February 7, 2025 that the duo were in sexual affairs.
“Starting from February 18, this year, Phwedo is suspected to been sleeping with the minor till to date
“We are currently waiting for medical results if indeed the suspect slept with the minor”, says Benjamin.
One of Kawale residents who corroborated with the police, reveals that Phwedo used to sleep with the minor four times a day that parents noticed the girl sneaking into the suspect’s apartment at Kawale in Lilongwe.
“The girl just wrote 2024 Malawi School Certificate Examinations (MSCE) exams. She was one of the suspect’s fun. Phwedo took advantage of the girl vulnerability by sleeping with her.
“Thiis not news to people around Kawale on Phwedo’s bad behaviour of sleeping with minors while coaxing them with films production for fame. Many victims were afraid to expose Phwedo’s bad behaviors,” charged one of Kawale residents.
The victim’s parents are the ones who reported the matter to the police hence the arrest.
Phwedo name came to the limelight following the popular movie “School Days”.
The suspect is also featured in another exciting movie titled “Welcome to Maula Prison” which is expected to be premiered in May this year.
