The Malawi court in southern district of Mwanza on Tuesday, January 26, sentenced an 18 year-old young man to five years in jail with hard labour for being found guilty of indecently assaulting a 12 year-old girl.
Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda on Wednesday, January 27, confirmed to The Maravi Post the conviction of William Arnold who committed the offense on December 5, 2015 at Chikoleka Village where he indecently assaulted the 12 year-old girl.
According to the Police Publicist Kaunda, the court heard that the convict on this fateful day around 1400hours was playing with the girl at her parents home while in the course of playing Arnold decided to start touching the girl’s vagina which he did for several time till got satisfied then left to his house.
“When the girl’s parents came home, the girl narrated about the ordeal to them and with no hesitation the matter was reported to the police whom they arrested William on the following day. On December 11 started appealing in court where he pleaded not guilty of the charge.
“But after three witnesses testified against him in the full trial His worship Ranwell Mangasi found him guilty of indecent assault to serve a jail term of five years which is contrary to section 137 of the Penal Code”, explains Kaunda.
In a related development, Mwanza Police Station is keeping in custody Steven Chimombo for allegedly stealing a motorcycle from his employer.
Chimombo who works as a mechanic took advantage of his boss Raphael Makombola’s absence to commit the offense at around 0800hours on January 25, 2016.
The suspect ran away with bile to Liwonde village where he wanted to sell the tool to a Mozambican but was arrested on the following day within Mwanza Township who later led the police to the village where the motorcycle was recovered.
According to Mwanza Police Station Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda Steven is expected to appear in court soon to answer theft charges and he hails from Benilita Village, the Traditional Authority (T.A) Dambe in Southern district of Neno
