Malawian man in Mwanza arrested for attempting to commit suicide over land wrangles

MWANZA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in the southern and border district of Mwanza are keeping in custody a 27 year-old man for attempting to commit suicide over family land wrangles.Mwanza police station spokesperson Edwin Kaunda told The Maravi Post on Saturday in an interview that the suspect Daluweni Gwetsani tempted to commit the crime on Wednesday this week following fierce fight he had with his sister Ruth.

Kaunda said the two went into a fight over the real owner of the piece of land which Gwetsani was in possession.

The police spokesperson added that the fight erupted right in the garden after the two failed to understand each other which prompted the suspect to terminate his life out of displeasure.

He added that as Daluweni was working in the garden around 09:00 hours saw his Sister Ruth approaching to where he was.

“Ruth asked his brother why he was working on the land. But Daluweni told her that the land belonged to him and that gardening was in readiness for the forth coming growing season.

“Ruth got furious and ordered Dauleni to stop working on the land because it belongs to her. The two could hardly understand each other and started fighting. Thereafter, the suspect’s wife rushed home and informed her mother in law about the incident. Their mother then rushed to the scene and managed to stop the fight.

“Consequently, Daluweni went to his house and took a lope and ran into the bush just close to his house. The wife suspected fishy was going to happen to the husband who was not home soon after the fight. She therefore informed Daluweni’s brother who started looking for him.

“After 30 minutes of searching, the suspect was found under a tree preparing a lope so that he should hang himself. The brother grabbed him and took him to Thambani Police Unit,” explained Kaunda.

Kaunda said during police interrogation Daluweni confessed that he wanted to end his life because of his sister’s intention to grab him the piece of land.

Daluweni who hails from Kankoma village, Sub Traditional Authority (T.A) Govati in Mwanza district remains in police custody waiting appear in court soon to answer the charge of attempting to commit suicide which is contrary to section 229 of the penal code.
