Malawi Health Ministry ready for rain season and any disease outbreaks

Lilongwe, January 6: Ministry of Health spokesperson Henry Chimbali has said that the ministry has stepped up its efforts to fight disease outbreaks that are associated with the rainy season.

Chimbali told Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Monday that they have not received any cases of waterborne disease outbreaks.

Malawi Police IG Kanyama tells his force to be very tough on criminals

Malawi Police Service Inspector General (IG), Paul Kanyama has urged police officers to be tough on criminals while observing human rights in order to eliminated crime in the country.

Kanyama was speaking at the official handover ceremony of five vehicles to Lilongwe Police station which will be used to revive the rapid response unit (990) of Lilongwe police and its surrounding zones.

Surveyor says Lake Malawi appears to have huge oil deposits

United Arab Emirates based company, Hamra Oil Holdings Limited (HOHL) said it has completed the first phase of oil exploration using a Full Tensor Gravity Gradeometry, an Air Survey on Lake Malawi.HOHL Senior Official, Ben Chiza-Mkandawire told journalists in Lilongwe on Monday that there is hope that the lake has huge amounts of oil deposits underneath. Paladin rejects Malawi toxic discharge accusations

URANIUM miner Paladin Energy has hit back at reports from Malawi which implied the group has been discharging toxic waste materials from its Kayelekera Mine into the local river system.

Paladin (PDN) said in a statement released to the ASX that it was not discharging waste into the river system in the southeast African country and was yet to treat and release any water from the project.

According to media reports mystery surrounds the whereabouts of a K50 million (US$111 359) grant to State Residences that the National Aids Commission (NAC) approved together with 53 other grants at the beginning of last year. This is monies that was approved before Peter Mutharika become President and definitely before BEAM was founded and registered in Malawi by first lady Gertrude Mutharika. Malawi Civil Society wrong on Army Commander and Reserve Bank Governor Appointments

Part of the statement released by civil society groups addressed appointments of Army Commander and Reserve Bank Governor saying by having the President appoint them smacks of politics. Indeed these should be political positions. Western countries of which our democracy is rooted from do make these positions as political and normally the incoming Head of state appoints his own people.

A Man in Malawi’s Dowa district hangs himself over a loyal family dispute

A 44-year-old man has committed suicide in Dowa district after failing to pay a fine of MK500.

Dowa Police publicist Sergeant Richard has confirmed the incident which happened over the weekend.

Sergeant Kaponda identified the deceased as Harold Kamg’oma of Chingwetseni village in the area of traditional authority Chiwere in the district.

Airtel Africa Announces top Management appointments at Group Level

Nairobi, Kenya, January 5, 2015 – Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, has today announced the appointments of Farhad Khan as the Chief Commercial Officer and Daddy Mukadi Bujitu as Chief Regulatory Officer for Airtel Africa. Farhad Khan, the incoming Chief Commercial Officer, will join Airtel from the MTN Group.

His most recent role was at MTN South Africa, where he held the position of Chief Sales & Distribution Officer since August 2013. He joined MTN in February 2003 as General Manager – Market Segment Strategy. In October 2005, he was appointed as the Marketing and Customer Relations Executive at MTN IranCell. In June 2009, he was appointed as CEO of MTN Zambia. In January 2012, he was appointed as the Executive – Enterprise Business at the MTN Group Office, before taking up his most recent role.
