Under the theme, and the AGA are happening under the theme, “Renewed Commitment to Youth Development Towards Malawi 2063″, the two events have attracted over 500 youths accross the country and beyond.

Four Cabinet Ministers are expected to grace the summit including Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, Minister of Mining, Monica Chang’anamuno and among others.

Addressing the news conference on Friday, November 8 in the capital Lilongwe, National Youth Council of Malawi Executive Director Rex Chapota disclosed that the Summit has assembled youths from different sectors and backgrounds of development and political parties.

Chapota said youths from agriculture, environment, mining, entrepreneurship, politics will go for mentorship sessions during the Summit in their sectors for knowledge growth.

“This is a huge opportunity that we have put forward for various stakeholders from various sectors to take collective introspection on what we have done in the youth development sector and make fresh commitments as we move forward in the context of the Malawi 2063 development blueprint.

“The Summit and AGA will also see the launch of two key strategic documents: The National Youth Council of Malawi 2024-2029 Strategic Plan and the Malawi 2063 Youth Engagement Strategy which is anchored in the National Planning Commission”, he said.

Chapota adds, “The Summit offers the platform at which young people engage both with each other and with duty bearers and other stakeholders in a no-holds-barred manner. This Summit is bringing together players from various walks of the development space.

“The Summit will have young people from across the country representing the voices of their fellow youth, top government officials, political leaders, private sectors players, local and international development partners, NGOs, CSOs, the academia, the media and multiple other participants”.

He explains further, “The Summit will touch on various aspects of development based on the different backgrounds of the stakeholders involved. The National Youth Summit accords the youth and different stakeholders the space to interact and build networks and carve solutions with freshness of purpose.

“As Malawi continues her journey towards MW2063, the 2024 Malawi National Youth Summit is a critical platform for amplifying the voices of young people and ensuring that their concerns, aspirations, and innovative ideas are central to the nation’s development agenda”.

The summit aims to harness the energy, creativity, and potential of Malawi’s youth to help achieve the country’s long-term vision of becoming an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation by 2063 including the priority actions on “Youth and Future Generations” under the newly adopted Summit of the Future Pact by the United Nations.

Chapota said, “The Summit is also an opportunity for us to situation the Government of Malawi’s flagship strategy for economic development: the ATM Strategy that brings together three key sectors of growth, Agriculture, Tourism and Mining.

“It also offers an opportunity to look at how the various generations, including adolescents, can be harnessed to ensure they grow into active, productive citizens of this our beautiful nation”.

He stated further, “The Summit will also see international delegates from the Commonwealth, the Pan African Youth Union and from within the Southern African Region. Indeed, it is so important our colleagues from beyond the borders of Malawi have deemed it necessary to be part of it.

“As part of the Summit, there will also be a Youth Cultural Festival that will take place on the afternoon/evening of the 12th of November. This will feature various young up and coming artists and creatives that have been identified through various means”.

Chapota explains further, “The Youth Cultural Festival is an opportunity for the youth to celebrate their Malawianness in its various forms of cultural expression. The icing on the Summit and Annual General Assembly Cake is that the it will be attended by no less than four Cabinet Ministers who will also feature in relevant discussions.

“This demonstrates that the Summit is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the involvement of the highest authorities in the key sectors of focus”

He appeals, “We would therefore like to call upon you to join us in calling the attention of the public to the Summit and the AGA, and indeed to the resolutions and outcomes of this auspicious and momentous gathering.

“The importance of the media in promoting national development cannot be overemphasised. Here is a gathering that is more than just an event: it is a coming together of minds to chart the way forward in the nation’s development”.

Chapota observes further, “The youth of Malawi are the backbone of our nation’s future. Their energy, creativity, and passion for change are key to our country’s transformation towards MW2063.

“This summit marks a renewed commitment by all stakeholders to work together in empowering and equipping our young people for success.”

In his remarks, National Youth Council of Malawi chairperson, Duncan Chiyani said, “The 2024 National Youth Summit is a vital step in ensuring that young people are not only beneficiaries but also key actors in the development of Malawi.

“Our goal is to create a space where the youth can collaborate with decision-makers, share their experiences, and take ownership of the futurethey envision.”

Drought-hit Malawi receives emergency food shipments from Ukraine

…A shipment of 19,000 metric tons of maize has arrived in Malawi from Ukraine, providing crucial support to those facing food insecurity.

…….Earlier floods and now droughts has caused a humanitarian aid crisis in the country.

.……Despite the ongoing Russian offensive, Ukraine continues to uphold its commitment to addressing global hunger by delivering essential food aid.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A shipment of 19,200 metric tons of maize, part of President Zelenskyy’s ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, has been delivered to Malawi, providing vital aid to those facing worsening water and food insecurity.

The emergency food delivery is a response to El Niño-induced dry spells which have affecting 44 percent of the national crop area in Malawi, causing droughts impacting an estimated two million people earlier this year.

The shipment of maize through the Grain from Ukraine programme has come as stocks run critically low and food prices continue to rise, offer relief to thousands of people.

The latest shipment, part of a wider programme where Ukraine works with partner countries and organisations to alleviate the food insecurity issue, is a significant step towards addressing the acute hunger and malnutrition many Malawians are facing.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has caused unprecedented disruption to Ukrainian trade, displaced millions of Ukrainians, devastated infrastructure, and put 70 million people worldwide at risk of food insecurity.

Despite these challenges, Ukraine remains committed to helping the Malawian people and those around the world experiencing humanitarian crises.

Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff to President Zelenskyy commented: “As Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine continues to disrupt global stability, our commitment to providing relief remains unwavering. This shipment to Malawi is another example of Ukraine’s determination to stand by those who need it most across the world.”

Dr Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi and a Grain from Ukraine Goodwill Ambassador, welcomed the shipment’s arrival: “As Malawi faces climate change and a persistent food instability, this shipment from Ukraine represents more than just food, it is a symbol of solidarity and hope for recovery for those who need it most.

“We are grateful for Ukraine’s support to Malawi, even while Ukraine is fighting an aggressive war and the threat against its own people it is maintaining its role as a global food producer.”

The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, launched by President Zelenskyy in 2022, works with more than 30 countries and international organisations including the World Food Partnership to deliver Ukrainian grain to countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East facing food shortages.

Ukraine’s shipments via the Black Sea, despite threat of attack from the Russian Navy, demonstrate Ukraine’s determination to maintain its role as an international aid provider to other nations.

Prior to the war, Ukraine supplied more than 15% of global corn exports, 10% of wheat, 15-20% of barley, and over 50% of sunflower oil. The Russian invasion has severely damaged the supply chains that allow Ukraine to produce and export this food to the rest of the world.

The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, launched in 2022 by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has garnered contributions exceeding USD$200 million from over 30 countries and international organisations, including European countries, the US, Japan and South Korea.

Recipients of the 170,000 tons of Ukrainian grain under this humanitarian program are countries experiencing food shortages, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Nigeria, Kenya, Sudan, and Yemen.

Opposition DPP unhappy with Afrobarometer

..allegedly conspires with some UNIMA academics to manipulate data

By Thomas Kachali

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is reportedly unhappy with the recent Afrobarometer report and is allegedly conspiring with some academics at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to manipulate the findings, sources have revealed.

The Afrobarometer results, released on Thursday, have angered DPP leaders, who sources say are determined to present an alternate narrative that would suggest the MCP government is widely unpopular among Malawians.

According to insiders from UNIMA, key figures within the DPP have been actively engaging certain academics, urging them to release results that could paint a negative picture of the current government’s support base.

“The DPP is desperate to control the narrative and they see these results as a potential threat to their 2025 election prospects,” one source disclosed under the condition of anonymity.

“They are trying to create a perception that Malawians do not want this government, which is far from the findings,” he added.

The alleged interference has sparked concern among political analysts and civil society organisations, who are warning of dangerous implications if academic institutions become tools of political manipulation.

Political analyst Chikumbutso Banda condemned the alleged collusion between the DPP and UNIMA academics, warning that it threatens the integrity of independent research in Malawi.

“If the DPP is indeed influencing academics to manipulate Afrobarometer findings, it sets a dangerous precedent for our democratic institutions,” said Banda.

“The public relies on Afrobarometer and similar surveys for objective assessments of governance. Any manipulation of such data erodes public trust and weakens our democratic processes,” he added.

Banda pointed out that Afrobarometer’s reputation is built on years of unbiased research across the continent and emphasised that attempts to politicise the data for partisan gains could diminish the credibility of the institution and undermine public confidence in the democratic system.

“What happens if we start disbelieving verified data? People will turn to rumours and misinformation and that is a recipe for national chaos,” warned Banda.

Civil society organisations have also raised concerns, calling for UNIMA’s independence and urging academics to prioritise academic integrity over political alliances.

Mary Chirwa, a spokesperson for the Civil Society Platform for Democracy, criticised the DPP’s alleged actions as a threat to Malawi’s fragile democracy.

“The notion that a political party is trying to manipulate research results to mislead the public is deeply disturbing. It reflects a complete disregard for democratic norms and academic freedom,” said Chirwa.

“Our universities should be centres of objective thought, not vehicles for political agendas. We expect our scholars to stand firm in upholding truth and integrity. Succumbing to political influence compromises the entire educational system and denies Malawians access to the facts they need to make informed decisions,” she said.

The alleged DPP-UNIMA conspiracy has ignited fresh debates about Malawi’s political climate as the country inches closer to the 2025 general elections.

Analysts warn that the desperation to control public opinion suggests heightened anxiety among opposition parties.

Commentator Blessings Mbewe observed that such allegations point to a broader strategy within the DPP to challenge the legitimacy of the ruling MCP-led government.

“It appears the DPP is not confident about its popularity and is therefore resorting to such underhanded tactics. This can only lead to deeper divisions in our society,” said Mbewe.

“If political parties continue down this path of disinformation and manipulation, we risk moving towards an era where truth and fact no longer matter. Malawians deserve leaders who respect their right to the truth,” he said.

The Centre for Social Research (CSR) director Joseph Chunga asked for time to investigate the allegations while DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba cut the line when this reporter introduced the subject matter.

Political interference in academic work, as suggested by these allegations, may not only mar Malawi’s political landscape but also threaten the independence of institutions that the country’s democracy relies on.

For now, it remains to be seen if UNIMA academics will bow to pressure or uphold the standards of unbiased academic research.

Shincheonji Church graduates 187 Malawian students in Bible education

CAPE TOWN-(MaraviPost)-The Shincheonji (New Heaven New Earth) Church of Jesus recently celebrated the graduation of 111,628 students from its comprehensive Bible education course, marking a milestone as the fourth global graduation of this scale.

Originally, the event was set to take place at Imjingak Pyeonghwanuri Park in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, an expansive venue reserved to accommodate tens of thousands of expected participants, including 1,000 religious leaders from diverse faiths.

However, in a sudden and unexpected move, the Gyeonggi Tourism Organisation canceled the reservation on October 29, 2024 just one day before the main ceremony, citing security concerns related to recent North Korean military actions.

Shincheonji representatives condemned the cancellation, calling it “an act of administrative tyranny” and noting that the decision disrupted months of planning and left 30,000 international participants and religious leaders from 78 countries scrambling.

Despite having received official confirmation of the event’s approval, Shincheonji Church and the Korean Association for National Unification Buddhism believe that the abrupt decision reflects unconstitutional religious discrimination.

Questions were raised when nearby public events were permitted to continue as planned, causing frustration among organisers who felt their gathering was unfairly targeted.

Undeterred, New Heaven New Earth Church mobilised quickly, coordinating with its branch churches to host the graduation across multiple church buildings in South Korea.

The main ceremony proceeded in Cheongju, and the event was successfully live-streamed on November 2 to various satellite locations across Southern Africa, enabling graduates, and special guests worldwide to take part in the celebration despite the logistical challenge.

The graduation marked a significant milestone in Shincheonji’s mission to provide deep, scriptural education, uniting participants from 153 countries.

In Malawi alone, 187 students from Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu completed the course and gathered in person to celebrate their achievement.

“This last-minute change could have dampened the occasion, but seeing our graduates overcome this challenge with unity and hope speaks volumes,” shared Andre van der Westhuizen, a church representative. “This graduation showcases how faith can bridge communities and bring about positive change.”

New Heaven New Earth Church’s Bible course continues to grow in popularity worldwide, focusing on instilling values of faith, unity, and hope through an intensive Bible study.

The graduation celebrations also reinforce the church’s dedication to promoting a genuine love for God, His Word, and the transformative power of faith in building communities.

In his address, the Chairman and senior pastor of New Heaven New Earth Church, Man-Hee Lee encouraged the new graduates to freely share the Word they had received.

“To many people we have to proclaim this Word. It doesn’t matter whether I’m in Protestantism or Shincheonji, what I know I want to share it with others. That’s the appointed task that we all have. It is an expression of thanks and faith,” Lee said.

The disruption ahead of this event reignited international dialogue around religious freedom and discrimination in South Korea, with New Heaven New Earth Church and the Association for Buddhist National Unification calling upon the South Korean government to uphold human rights and prevent future restrictions on religious gatherings.

The church has appealed to international organisations to monitor and advocate for fair treatment, ensuring that all religious groups can exercise their freedom of worship without interference.

Of Malawi’s independent comment on Russia-Ukraine foreigners exploitation

By George Mhango

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Human rights and advocacy campaigners in Malawi have called on Lilongwe to investigate and repatriate two Malawian girls working in Russia’s Alabuga Special Economic Zone (SEZ), deemed to be part of wider Russian exploitation of foreigners from developing countries.

While details or particulars of such Malawian girls are still sketchy, The Russian Investigative Outlet Protokol says they are among the 182 women from Africa and Asia, working in an enemy drone factory in Alabuga.

This revelation comes amid news that the Ukrainian attack on Alabuga Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tatarstan, in April 2024, showed that the area is a target for military operations.

The Russian investigative outlet Protokol—which runs anti-war stories online from the city of Samara—revealed in an exposé that the Alabuga SEZ contains a drone factory staffed by foreign recruits.

Research further shows that the Alabuga SEZ runs multiple programmes, including Alabuga Polytechnic College—which provides joint work-education programmes to 15-16-year-old male Russian students—and the Alabuga Start Programme, which offers training and work specifically to girls from Africa between the age of 18 and 22.

Through the Alabuga Start Programme, girls in Africa (only those between 18 and 22 years) are being wooed into Russia for a variety of offers such as work and training, with attractive packages, an income which many feel is a dream come true.

However, their safety is questionable: their area of deployment is a target for Ukrainian counter-offensive as the Russian aggression against it continues.

Calls for Malawi to act grow

Reacting to the reports, Benedicto Kondowe, who is Chair of National Advocacy Platform-NAP, a grouping of human rights and social organisations in Malawi, said there is need for the Malawi Government to launch investigations to ensure safety of its citizens and repatriation of the affected girls.

Kondowe

He further hinted that there is also a need for proper civic education to jobless-Malawian youths so that they do not end up in such situations which can cost their lives.

“We implore the government to expedite investigations to rescue the girls. It is important to have them repatriated home safely,” Kondowe said.

The number of young girls recruited through the Alabuga Start Programme included Uganda (46), Kenya (14), Nigeria (14), South Sudan (14), Rwanda (14), Sri Lanka (10), Zambia (4), Ethiopia (6), Ghana (2), Malawi (2), Mozambique (1), South Africa (6), Tanzania (4), and Zimbabwe (4).

Through its social media posts, the Alabuga Start Programme has shown pictures of some successful applicants from African countries, including Rwanda, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, who have signed up for the programme that promises work and training in various fields.

That aside, one of the lead Researchers for Human Rights Watch-HRW in the African Region, Idriss Nassah sounded that it is news worth finding out.

“Interesting and quite an important story. Unfortunately, I have no data on this,” he said.

HRW has often times researched happenings in Malawi. In March 2024, the Human Rights Watch-HRW said Malawi should increase efforts to end widespread child and forced marriage, or risk worsening poverty, illiteracy, and preventable maternal deaths in the country.

Disaster in waiting?

Some of the Alabuga Start material also details how to stay safe if a building collapses, indicating that supervisors know the risks because an anti-drone unit called ‘Stalin’s Falcons’ is also present in the SEZ.

Blantyre-based child rights advocate, Masuzgo Banda, also mother of three, said in an interview that lack of parental care and career guidance to children leads to such developments, as most of the young girls and boys are left to make their own decisions.

“As a mother, I cannot allow my children to just travel to such volatile countries without my approval, even if they are given scholarships or promised work because the internet is flooded with fake job-related programmes,” Banda says.

Africa recently lost two young men – Lemekani Nyirenda of Zambia and Nemes Tarimo of Tanzania – who were studying in Russia but found themselves at the battlefront fighting in Ukraine to secure their freedom after they were arrested and jailed for alleged criminal offences.

Nyirenda and Tarimo were promised freedom from their prison terms if they successfully fought the way in Ukraine on behalf of Russia following their recruitment from prison by leader of the mercenary group Wagner, now called the Africa Corps.

Malawi silent again on similar concern

While the development is of grave concern to Malawians, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, including Minister Nancy Tembo, are yet to respond to queries despite several reminders.

For instance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Relations Officer Charles Nkhalamba confirmed receipt of the questions two weeks ago as to whether the government was aware of the Alabuga Start Programme and the risks associated with the areas where young African girls are being made to work.

However, while promising to revert, Nkhalamba has not responded despite several reminders. Secretary of Foreign Affairs said he was out of the country when reached but promised to respond.

Concerns from Banda and other human rights campaigners also come at a time when—two years ago—some Malawian ladies were trapped in hazardous work in countries such as Oman and Kuwait where they went to work as maids.

News also went viral that they were being subjected to different forms of modern day slavery, a development that forced the Malawi Government to initiate repatriation processes of the women after investigations and discussions with authorities in those countries.

Sergey Podystnik, editor of the independent Russian outlet—which first broke the story—claimed those working at Alabuga are forced to use toxic manufacturing materials.

“Participants in an affiliated scheme at the site, the Alabuga Composite Program, have complained about inadequate protection. Other students said they developed allergic reactions to resin used, even developing severe itching and ‘small holes’ in their cheeks,” according to Podystnik.

But Kondowe, in reaction, has insisted that youths—who want to travel abroad for job or education— should verify such opportunities with the government to authenticate whether they are real or not.

“Let labour deals be between governments as is the case with the Israel and Malawi Labour Export Deal signed recently in Tel Aviv. In that way, it will help the government to be accountable to its citizens, when something sinister happens,” he said.

Malawi in diplomatic conflict

While the war between Ukraine and Russia continues, just this week, Kiev has shipped 14,500 tonnes of corn to Malawi, with another 5,000 tonnes to be delivered soon.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said the corn would help stabilize the situation and provide for the monthly needs of over 1.5 million Malawians, who are food insecure due to the El-nino induced weather this year.

Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) Charles Kalemba appreciated the donation, saying it will help families affected by hunger

According to the Malawi Vulnerability and Assessment, 4.5 million out of the 20 million Malawians need urgent food aid because farming households in 23 of out 28 districts did not harvest due to floods and El-nino weather.

However, social commentator Mavuto Mwase thinks the maize donation gesture by Ukraine, is one way of buying sympathy from Malawi considering that two months ago, their Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Malawi, Zambia and other SADC countries.

Malawi also has diplomatic relations with Russia, something that puts Lilongwe in a tight situation when making international decisions.

This is because the Russian government in 2023 donated 20,000 tons of fertilizer to Malawi as part of its efforts to garner diplomatic support from various African nations.

At the handover ceremony, Malawi’s Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale said the fertilizer will reach 400,000 farming households and boost their agricultural production.

But in 2022, Malawi voted to censure Russia at the United Nations for its invasion of Ukraine, while more than 15 other African countries abstained from the vote.

Russian Ambassador to Malawi Nikolai Krasilnikov said in 2023 that he hoped African leaders would press for the abolition of international sanctions against Russia.

UTM elective convention: Kabambe dates Southern Region delegates for support

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The United Transformation Movement (UTM) presidential aspirant Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has urged delegates to vote for him during the party’s elective convention on November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu.

Speaking with journalists after meeting the delegates at Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre on Thursday, Kabambe said he is worthy of running the party since he has worked in various top government positions for twenty-five years and is ready to bring the experience he gained from those positions into UTM.

“I am urging the UTM delegates to vote for me during our convention next week. The party needs someone who has experience to drive it forward and I am eligible for that. I have twenty-five years of experience and qualifications in running various government institutions.

“I have been budget director, I have been Governor of Reserve Bank, I have been principal secretary in Malawi government and I have served various top positions out there. I bringing all this worthy of experience into UTM so that the party also has people who can run this country,” said Kabambe.

The former RBM Governor also highlighted the economic challenges Malawi is facing under Tonse Alliance leadership, including hunger, poverty and joblessness, which have left half the population in dire need of help.

He emphasized that the country needs a government that addresses these challenges and meets the needs of its people.

Kabambe promised to bring economic reform and transformation if elected.

He stressed that the UTM party needs to stand by its ideals of unity and transformation and elect a team that can be trusted by Malawians and has the confidence of the people.

Exclusive: MCP Forms Electoral Alliance with PP, UDF, and PDP Ahead of 2025 Polls

By Twink Jones Gadama

This publication has uncovered reports of a secret electoral alliance between the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and three opposition parties: Joyce Banda’s People’s Party (PP), Atupele Muluzi’s United Democratic Front (UDF), and Kondwani Nankhumwa’s Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Kondwani Nankhumwa
Kondwani Nankhumwa forms own party

According to highly placed sources, the alliance aims to bolster MCP’s chances of retaining power in the 2025 general elections.

The partnership is said to have been formalized during a clandestine meeting in Lilongwe, attended by high-ranking officials from the participating parties.

Insiders reveal that Atupele Muluzi will be chosen as running mate to MCP’s presidential candidate, Lazarus Chakwera.

Meanwhile, presidents of the other partner parties will be appointed as senior ministers in the event of an MCP victory.

A leaked Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) indicates that the agreement will be legally binding, with provisions for penalties in case of breach.

This clause is reportedly aimed at preventing a repeat of MCP’s past experiences with failed alliances.

Bakili Muluzi, Atupele’s father and former President, has been tasked with leveraging his influence among traditional leaders in the Eastern Region to drum up support for the alliance.

Bakili Muluzi

Last month, Muluzi hosted senior chiefs at his BCA residence, where some MCP members clad in UDF regalia were spotted.

Bakili Muluzi this week met PP’s Joyce Banda in Zomba and expected to meet PDP’s Kondwani Nankhumwa to cement the alliance,a according to the source.

In a closed-door meeting with Joycr Banda this week the two former presidents allegedly swore an oath of allegiance to the pending formal alliance.

However PDP’s publicity secretary Rhodes Msonkho in a phone call interview expressed ignorance on such a secret meeting.

“I am not aware of any secret meetings between the PDP and MCP to form an alliance,” Msonkho stated. He added, “As the publicity secretary,i would be informed of such significant developments, but I have no knowledge of this.”

Efforts to speak to UDF and PP proved futile as their phones couldn’t be reached while Moses Mkukuyu government’s Spokesperson chose to ignore our call when contacted several times.

On the other hand, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is reportedly forming its own alliance with AFORD and UTM.

MCP’s move to form an alliance comes amid internal struggles and dwindling popularity. With the party’s chances of winning solo estimated at 1%, insiders claim President Chakwera was contemplating resignation but was convinced otherwise by Richard Chimwendo Banda and Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma.

This development has significant implications for Malawi’s political landscape.

Will this alliance propel MCP to victory, or will it succumb to internal conflicts and external pressures?

Lumbadzi’s Gomulira villagers want Malawi Govt to intervene in convicted Yunhua Lin daughter’s dubious land occupation

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a dramatic turn of events a Chinese wildlife convict Lin Yunhua’s daughter has allegedly come in the limelight to process formal registration of her father’s controversial big piece of land he acquired dubiously from the village without the knowledge of chiefs in village headman Gumulira in Lumbazi, Lilongwe.

Chiefs and villagers have since demanded government to intervene in the dubious occupation of the dambo land by Lin claiming their loss of the land has deprived their economic opportunities, fueled hunger and robbery among the people.

Chief Gumulira, his deputy Japhet Chimpeni and other villagers on Wednesday told journalists that, Lin who is also answering corruption charges dubiously bought the dambo land which was used as a source of income for the people in the village.

Communities said Lin occupied the land for his livestock farming while behind the scenes turning it a base for his illegal wildlife criminal activities.

The chief and others said people used the land land for farming, feed livestock, mine sand, mould bricks and sell them to companies and use the money to meet their basic needs including school fees for their children.

“He illegally occupied the land and established his farm without our knowledge as chiefs, and engaged a chief from different village to issue him ownership documents. He later, appointed the same chief as his farm supervisor for the period he would be in prison .

“Even officials from the ministry of lands were last year surprised how he occupied this big land in question and continued to illegally occupy more land from villagers even if he is prison,” said Gumulira.

He said the ministry of lands officials came to investigate the matter last year following media reports of on land issues between chiefs and Lin, and they gave hope to the people that they would intervene.

He said said while they have been anticipating the ministry’s intervention on the matter, the villagers are surprised that a self claimed Lin’s daughter has recently been facilitating the formal registration of the land.

“We have seen her coming to the farm in company of Lin’s employees and inspecting the prices of land dubious bought by her father from the villagers through his father’s agents.

“We have been told by her father’s agents who accompanies her that she has been going to the ministry of lands and group village headman Chinoko Kawenga to help her process the formal registration of the land , and we have been warned against speaking out,” reveals Gumulira and Chimpeni.

In a phone interview a highly charged Group Village Headman Kawenga demanded the journalists to face him in person at his home and cut off the line.

Efforts to talk to the ministry of lands and alleged Lin’s daughter proved futile.

Lin who is serving his long-term jail sentence in one of the prisons in the country is also answering corruption charges of attempting to bribe a high court judge to be given a short sentence.

He is facing deportation soon after serving his jail sentence.

Chakwera congratulates Trump for retaining US Presidency

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated Donald Trump for wining US Elections as American 47th head of state.

“Congratulations to President-elect Donald J. Trump for emerging winner of the recent US election.

Trump on his successful election as the 47th President of the United States,” reads Chakwera’s brief congratulations message.

Trump has won in the key battleground states of Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina – and is leading in several others – narrowing Kamala Harris’s path to victory significantly.
