Malawi has a multi-party system with over 40 registered political parties. The political process in Malawi is such that parties are voted into power. Parties participate in an electoral process. The parties with the most representation in the National Assembly are the People’s Party (PP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

President of Malawi

Under the country’s 1966, 1994 and 1995 constitutions, the President is executive head of state. The first President was elected by the National Assembly, but later presidents were elected in direct popular elections for a five-year term. President Jacob Zuma ‘agrees to go’

PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-President Jacob Zuma will resign as soon as a list of preconditions has been finalised, in a deal struck on Tuesday between Zuma and African National Congress (ANC) leader Cyril Ramaphosa and confirmed by sources on Tuesday night.

The deal led to the postponement of an ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for the following day to force Zuma’s removal from office.

That meeting had been due to take place at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town and would have heard a recommendation from the ANC’s national working committee that Zuma be removed as head of state.

The meeting between Zuma and Ramaphosa took place after Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete announced the postponement of the state of the nation address, which Zuma would have delivered on Thursday.

Zuma spent Tuesday morning in Tuynhuys dealing with Cabinet committee meetings. Afterwards, he left for Genadendal, his official residence in Cape Town. Ramaphosa met Zuma there after 4pm alongside ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule.

On Tuesday evening, Magashule told TimesLIVE that the meeting between the two presidents had been “constructive and robust”.

“I was there… I left the two presidents to engage and I joined the meeting towards the end,” he said.

Magashule said Zuma and Ramaphosa agreed that the decision to postpone the state of the nation address was correct.

“They also agreed that the urgent NEC [meeting] called should be postponed after their constructive discussion,” he said.

Magashule would not confirm whether Zuma had agreed to resign, although other ANC leaders indicated that the deal that was struck would see Zuma “go in a dignified way”.

He did, however, indicate that the discussion between Ramaphosa and Zuma deferred the pressing need for the NEC to discuss his exit.

The secretary-general would not say who would deliver the state of the nation address once a new date is announced.

South Africa postpones State of Nation address amid battle to oust President Jacob Zuma

CAPE TOWN-(MaraviPost)-South Africa on Tuesday, Feb 6, postponed its State of the Nation address, the keynote political event of the year, as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party is roiled by a battle to unseat President Jacob Zuma.

Zuma, in power since 2009, is fighting for his survival and faces the risk of soon being ousted from office by his own party after multiple graft scandals.

According to Straits Times, as president, Zuma had been due to deliver the State of the Nation address to parliament in Cape Town on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Foundation has called for South Africa’s controversial President Zuma to quit as he faces growing pressure to stand down.

South Africa had seen “systematic looting” under Mr Zuma’s rule, and he “must go sooner rather than later”, the foundation said.

The governing ANC party has called a meeting of its top body for Wednesday to decide on Mr Zuma’s future.

The president has so far resisted calls to quit over corruption allegations. Mr Zuma has repeatedly denied corruption allegations.

MCP pens MACRA against new introduced MBC program ‘Sapita Kawili’

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has written the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) against the new program known as ‘Sapita Kawili’ that the tax-funded Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC)) is expected to air through its television.

The program is aim at disclosing how Malawians were victimized in the one party era under the MCP administration.

The ‘Sapita Kawili’ program openly inform Malawians not to vote for MCP into power because of the its past behavior.

MCP further attack MBC for refusing to open up the airwaves for the opposition parties and that its content is largely biased towards the ruling party.

In a letter dated 1 February, 2018 and signed by MCP second deputy secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka to Macra director general Godfrey Itaye, the public broadcaster is also airing some programs such as Chinduji, Manifesto Yanu and Ndikati Chete which have been biased .

The party warned that the infamous Rwandan genocide was propelled by the use of the media.

“Radios were airing programmes which were promoting hate against each other,” said Mkaka citing a research of Thomas Hauschildit.

“Thus, MBC out to know how hate messages they are trying to promote all in the name of sprucing DPP image would put this nation on fire,” reads the letter.

MCP reminds Macra to keep MBC “in check” as it is legally required to provide unbiased coverage to all parties because it is run on tax payers’ money.

Mkaka said they have reported the matter to the regulator in the spirit of being “preventive and progressive”.

MCP further reminded Macra that it has summoned Zodiak and Times media houses “when there were complaints.”

“We look forward to your expeditious and adequate action,” reads the MCP letter to Macra.

Media expert Lowani Mtonga said that the battle to free MBC needs practical action.

“The lack of editorial independence and opening up of MBC airwaves is against the spirit of Communications Act and the Constitution. The Communications Act clearly spells out under Section 87 of the public mandate of MBC to operate without any bias or serve any political interests.

“Secondly, MBC ignores the Constitution which categorically states that everyone has the right to freedom of expression and that the media has the right to publish freely. This entails MBC to be neutral and serve public interests regardless of people’s political views,” Mtonga argued.

He said MBC as a public broadcaster is falling short of the mandate as a platform for public discourse.

Effort to talk to Itaye proved futile.

Meet Madam Abida Mia—one of the best political strategists in Malawi

By John Dereck Kathumba

When it comes to political strategy and organization, we read and hear of different names in our country as top-notch strategists—I think you have ever heard of such names as Bright Malopa, Allan Ntata, Brian Bowler, Dr Ben Phiri as one of the tried and proven political strategists and organizers of the soil.

In fact stories are told of how effective the combination of strategist Malopa, Ntata, Sawerengera etc as commanded by the Strategist-In-Chief, Brian Bowler was to the landslide victory of late Bingu Wa Mutharika during 2009 elections.

When Peter Mutharika came into the picture after the death of his elder brother —stories are also told on how Ben ‘Kagame’ Phiri proved his dexterity in as far as political organization and strategy is concerned.

Nevertheless, we still hear that Bowler and Malopa were also in the thick of things making one of the best political strategies which helped to propel DPP into power from opposition benches. Though some DPP gurus try to downplay the reality, it remains unimpeachable up to date that Ntata was also part of the team scheming day and night to push DPP into power though he was sadly dumped after the kill.

But this article is not about these folks who helped to bring this non-performer President Peter Mutharika in power, no, this article is about a female political warrior who is also proving her mettle in as far as political maneuvering and strategy is concerned. Abida Mia—wife to Lower Shire Political Giant, Sidik Mia, is the character under microscope in this article.

I got interest to conduct a mini-research of ‘adona’ (Madam) as Mrs Mia is fondly called among the foot-soldiers she commands, when I went through the parliamentary hazards on the maiden speeches from Honorable Ulemu Msungama of Lilongwe City South East and Honorable Lawrence Sitolo of Nsanje Lalanje Constituency during the last sitting of Parliament.

Verbatim, this is an extract of what Hon Lawrence Sitolo said in his first ever speech in parley.

“In another special way, Mr Speaker, Sir, allow me to express my profound thanks to Mbuya Honorable Muhammed Sidik Mia and Madame Abida Mia for playing a very remarkable role to my victory.

Enter Hon Ulemu Msungama, this is part of what he said in his speech.

“In a very Special way, let me appreciate the giant of the lower Shire, the hero, Mr. Ichocho, Mbuya Sidik Mia and Madam Mia for being there for me when I most needed help. Even at the lowest moments, when times were hard, this man would drive all the way from Chikwawa just to help Lilongwe South East get what it truly deserved.”

As someone curious to understand things, the mention of Mrs Mia in both speeches aroused my interest. In other words, thus using research language, the mentions kind of gave me a ‘problem statement’ worthy pursuing to seek clear understanding.

The questions I posed to myself were: Was this lady—Madam Mia—mentioned in these important speeches because of her being wife to Hon Sidik Mia? If it was the case, then why did these honorable lawmakers also not mention names of spouses of the other key figures they recognized to have played a role in their victory?

The response to the second question was that Madam Mia must have done something worthy such recognition. The follow up question was then, what could be that thing that has earned her such recognition?

Were these valid mini-research questions? I think they are! Read on!

The Political Warrior Leading from the Front

The sample I asked these questions agreed on one thing that Madam Abida Mia is a political warrior leading from the front. They said she is an excellent organizer and her hand is always there even when she is not physically available at a given particular function.

They told me that her great skills lie in the way she organizes political activities. It was noted that to organize a political meeting is an involving exercise. To put things together to ensure that the rally is well attended, to ensure that even the stage is well prepared, to ensure that people at the rally are well taken care of, I was told, is not a simple thing to do.

Apart from say, financial resources, I was also told that it requires great skill to organize such stuff. It was then revealed that this is where Madam Mia comes in. She works directly with the front-troops who organizes stuff to make sure that those seniors coming to address the rally or meeting find everything in order.

‘She might not necessary be at the venue but you see her hand in what is happening that side—she coordinates things like no one else,” said a source who at some point worked with her.

“In case you have attended major rallies since Mia joined MCP or perhaps watched such rallies on TV, the end product of what you see, the colorful stage you see and in fact the logistics associated with political rallies is mostly championed by her, she is a great asset in that regard I tell you,” collaborated another source.

“You want to genuinely know unsung heroes of MCP—those unknown people but are doing a fantastic job in promoting MCP—then ask Madam Mia, she works with such people around the clock,” chipped another source emphasizing how skilled she is to work with all and sundry.

Another source gave an interesting perspective.

“She is that kind of a person who rewards those who are doing a good job and encourages those who are lagging behind,” observing that ‘she is much liked because she works on the ground with the people almost 24/7.”

Another source challenged me to ask any other person who might have ever worked with her, ranging from party officials, at both local as well as national level, media people, etc that they will agree with sentiments of how great a ground political warrior she is and this source was therefore not surprised to note that people like Honorable Msungama and Honorable Sitolo gave her a special mention in their speeches in Parliament.

“She deserves it for her capabilities! She is fantastic,” continued this source before concluding that “She is blessed when it comes to crafting both business as well as political strategies,” adding that “Hon Sidik Mia is a lucky person to have Madam Mia by his side. She makes things happen!”

To render credit to all the responses from my sources is a notorious ruling DPP ‘pseudo-name’ cadet Raymond Chikoko, whom in one of his MCP insulting posts, made a rare U-turn and wrote praises of how great Madam Mia is when it comes to motivating foot-soldiers under her command.

Conclusion

In a country where we lack women who can meaningfully participate in politics, it is relieving to see such women as Madam Mia filling such a gap as evidenced by the two MP’s own admission that she played a ‘remarkable’ role to their success. And on the road to 2019 elections, one could only hope that more Madam Mia’s will come out of MCP and do whatever they can to help their party dislodge the DPP misfortune that befell mother Malawi in 2014.

FBI special agent dumps his job over political attacks

Washington- An FBI special agent, Josh Campbell says he has decided to leave his job because of political attack to the agent.

According to CNN report, Campbell said he has turned in his badge so he can publicly voice his concerns over the politicization of the bureau by Republicans in Congress and the Trump administration.

“FBI agents are dogged people who do not care about the direction of political winds,” former FBI special agent Josh Campbell wrote in a New York Times op-ed.

“But to succeed in their work, they need public backing. Scorched-earth attacks from politicians with partisan goals now threaten that support, raising corrosive doubts about the integrity of the FBI that could last for generations.”

The op-ed comes amid Republicans’ increased scrutiny of the Justice Department and the FBI for their handling of the Russia investigation.

Campbell’s piece was published Friday, the same day the Trump administration published an intelligence memo compiled by House Intelligence Committee Republicans that alleges FBI and Justice Department abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

The memo accuses the FBI of improperly using information paid for in part by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to obtain a FISA warrant for Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page.

Democrats have blasted the memo as a misleading document that omits key facts about the Page FISA application, accusing Republicans of using the memo to try to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

The FBI said in a statement prior to the memo’s publication that it had “grave concerns” about the memo’s accuracy.

President Donald Trump has said the memo “totally vindicates” him in the Russia probe.

Campbell said he believes “political operatives are weaponizing their disagreement” with the Russia investigation “in a bid to undermine the credibility of the entire institution” of the FBI, which could tarnish the public support of federal law enforcement for years to come.

“The assumption among confused and dismayed FBI employees is that the attacks are meant to soften the blow should the investigation by Mr. Mueller, the special counsel, lead to additional charges. However, these kinds of attacks by powerful people go beyond mere criticism — they could destroy the institution,” Campbell wrote.

Campbell served as a special assistant to former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired last year.

Comey dismissed any significance to the memo when it was published, and on Friday tweeted that Campbell “will be missed at the FBI, but his voice is an important addition to the national conversation.”

Paramount Lundu attacks ‘evil’ govt officials

Controversial chief, Paramount Chief Lundu of the lower shire on Sunday attacked some government officials who he described as ‘weakened’ especially for blocking the completion of a health center project close to his headquarters.

Lundu said this without directly mentioning the names of the concerned officials at the presence of President Peter Mutharika.

The chief made the remarks on the podium during the political rally organized by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at Nchalo in Chikwawa district.

According to him, he started asking for the facility since 2009 during the era of President Bingu Wa Mutharika, founder of the ruling DPP.

“There is someone within government officials who does not want the facility to complete. I have been moving in different government offices making sure that the facility is completed but to no avail,” worried Lundu.

He then asked President Mutharika under his power to making sure that the facility is finished and start operating in time.

“I have access to have to receive medication everywhere because I move but my worry is with my subjects who cannot manage that,” he added.

Apart from the in completion health center, Lundu openly told government officials to start involving traditional leaders especially when carrying developmental projects in their jurisdictions.

“Some just start constructing public facilities without the knowledge of traditional leaders. Do you think that project can sustain?” He wondered.

In his short response, President Mutharika said he has held the chief’s complaints and that has take it into consideration.

DPP refers Chakwera as ‘Jonah’ in the Old Testament

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Sunday mocked the leader of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Dr Lazarus Chakwera by referring to him as Jonah who was immersed by the big fish in the Bible after shunning God’s command to go to Nineveh.

Speaking during a political rally at Nchalo in Chikwawa, DPP regional governor for the south Charles Mchacha said the wrath of God is upon MCP because of Chakwera.

Mchacha said the boat that Jonah boarded after shunning to go to Nineveh, met with a lot of problem at the middle of the lake because of him.

According to him, Chakwera’s background is just the same as that of Jonah and he also left ordained God’s works and joined politics.

“That’s why you see fightings in the MCP. God wants Chakwera back, unless he is out, there will be no peace in the MCP,” he said.

Mchacha further mocked Sidik Mia for patterned with MC, saying he will not any add value to the Party.

“It’s like adding two different things. A pastor by profession and a politician. Mia has been with DPP as a minister in the year 2005 during Bingu Wa Mutharika’s era. There is no new things that Malawians should expect from him,” he said.

In his remarks, former MCP Malawi Young Pioneer employee, who is also the current the minister of information Nicholas Dausi, said the MCP (which is the country’s oldest party) will not change despite the coming of Chakwera.

He then vowed to reveal the MCP evil secret soon, so that Malawians who were young or not yet born during the one party era should know the consequences they will face if they vote the oldest party into power.

Refuting the pronouncements, Pastor Phiri who ministers in an evangelical church in the Lower Shire, said that “Governor Mchacha, needs to read the entire Jonah story, which has a good ending — Jonah is released from the belly of the fish, and preaches to Nineveh.”

“He is has a teachable moment, when God shows Jonah that God has mercy on whom He chooses to have mercy,” Pastor Phiri Sai.

The man of God, who was in secondary school at the change from one party to multi-party politics in Malawi (1993), also remembers about the invincible MCP. He said all people in Malawi were members of the one Party and that there are even some that performed atrocities, but are now either in DPP, AFORD or UDF.

“The new rulers in democratic Malawi in 1994, did not want to have a Truth and Reconciliation Tribunal, so we never found out what happened, who did what, and whom we need to reconcile with.

“It is wrong to put all blame on the MCP and even tag the new MCP leadership, when there are some culprits of the evils of the one party MCP era that are prancing about as Democrats just because they belong to the ruling party,” political analyst Jumani Issac said in reaction to the DPP’s outburst.”

Isaac also challenged Minister Dausi on his promise to reveal the “evil” people commuted during the time he was in the MCP as a member of the MYP; he said Dausi should have told Malawians all this information upon his joining the DPP.

“Dausi should not use this carrot as a campaign gimmick. He should not Messi with Malawians this way – people suffers, many lost their lives and others are living in exile because of the work of the organization he was part and parcel of. His being in DPP and enjoying a posh ministerial position, does not vindicate him from the evil committed by his former employer -the powerful MYP,” Isaac said.

Isaac said he lives in exile, and still fears returning to his home because there are still wlwments at play in Malawi politics that have similitude of the one party state.

MP Kabwira reaffirms MCP loyalty despite party’s political punches; Constituents unhappy with the firing

SALIMA-(MaraviPost)-The main opposition Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Salima North-West constituency, Dr. Jessie Kabwira on Sunday reaffirmed total commitment to the party saying will not leave for other parties.

Dr. Kabwira says she remains MCP loyal members despite the party’s political punches she keeps on getting when striving for constitutionalism.

The Salima-North West lawmaker added that she will die in the party no matter how hard the path might be when she is pushing for law and order in the party.

Kabwira was addressing party’s constituency area chairpersons following her firing from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

She was along side with Secretary General (SG) Gustavo Kaliwo, Vice President Richard Msowoya, deputy secretary general James Kaunda, treasurer general Tony Kandiero suspended for unknown reasons.

However, High Court seating in Blantyre on Thursday, February 01, came to their rescue after granting a stay order stopping MCP leadership to suspend them until inter-parte hearing.

“I was surprised when I got the letter that I have been fired from the party without even given me reason for such an action. This is to end my political career which will not happen as am here to serve my people.

“This is the reason I got an injunction stopping this undemocratic tendencies for natural justice to prevail. This stay order just confirms my full loyalty to the party. The injunction must unite us as we are preparing to take power in 2019,” Kabwira assures.

The lawmaker who is also Chairperson for Parliamentary committee on women caucus hinted that will not leave MCP to another party till the end.

Kabwira was however surprised that her constituents, district and lake-shore regional committees were not aware of her reasons for being fired from the party.

One of the top Salima North West constituency’s executive members shared the same concerns of being in the dark their legislator’s firing.

He told the Maravi Post in an interview that the constituency is not aware of any wrong doing Kabwira has done to deserve the party’s rough.

The member therefore requested the MCP leadership to bring evidence of any wrong doing for the constituency to discipline her.

“We just heard from the radio that our MP was fired without informing us as to why she got such a treatment. This is not the time for wrangles as the public are having trust in MCP to take after 2019 elections,” worried the member.

According to the civil case number 34 of 2018 is between claimants; Secretary General (SG) Gustavo Kaliwo, Vice President Richard Msowoya, deputy secretary general James Kaunda, treasurer general Tony Kandiero and Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwira, and defendants; MCP President Lazarus Chakwera, Ezekiel Ching’oma and NEC members.

The court ordered the MCP NEC not to summon any claimants to the disciplinary inquires and from suspending them until trial of action or until further order of the court.

“Until the hearing of the inter-parte application for an injunction or until a further order, the defendant by either themselves, their agents, servants or otherwise however be and are hereby restrained from inviting the claimant to a disciplinary or suspending them from their member of Malawi Congress Party or from perform their duties of the position that they hold in the party.

“If you disobey this order, you may be found guilty of contempt of court and may be sent to prison or fined of your assets may be seized. Within the next 14 days an inter-parte summons must be issued,” reads the stay order.

The claimants are represented by lawyer Kalekeni Kaphale and the stay order has been served already to MCP leadership and NEC.

MCP deputy Publicity Secretary Ezekiel Ching’oma over the weekend indicated that the party will vacate the injunction arguing that the party’s side was not heard before granting the stay order.

Confusionists should not be in DPP but in ‘ng’ona’ party- President Mutharika

CHIKWAWA-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika on Sunday told confusionists in his ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to desist and join the main opposition, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) which he referred as ng’ona party.

Mutharika made the remarks during the political rally he organized at Nchalo in Chikwawa district.

According to him, he know that there are some Judah Iscariot in his party who changes their colours during day and night.

He however called for peace in his party in order to win the 2019 tripartite elections as well as developing the country.

“I want peace in DPP and not quarrels or fighting. Fight should be in ng’ona party and those who want should go and join it. I don’t want gossipers in DPP. Everyone has right to join the party and must be welcomed,” he said.

DPP regional governor for the south Charles Mchacha and Minister of Information Nicholas Dausi described the current infighting in MCP as behavior of the party.

The two ask Malawians to vote for DPP in 2019 tripartite elections especially if they want development.

Of MCP self-destructive tendencies, snapping the feet of the giant

By Nyasa Times editorial

Since winning the by-elections in October last year, the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has been behaving like it is already in government. The party’s youths have been behaving like hysterical rabbits; they are all over the place, and on social media trumpeting the win as a precursor to what they say will be the party’s victory at Malawi’s national polls in 2019.

Chakwera needs to do more introspection than he is currently doing

The by-elections have also not spared its president, Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera. His ego has been so much bloated that he is now behaving like Sate President of the Republic of Malawi. He has gone full throttle throwing his weight around and firing senior members of MCP from their positions relentlessly.

As we are talking, Jessie Kabwila, the party’s former Publicity Secretary and senior member has been fired; the party’s Vice President and Speaker of Parliament, Richard Msowoya has been suspended; Secretary General, Gustav Kaliwo and a host of other senior members of the party have also been suspended, and the scramble for top positions in the party has reached a crescendo.

The party now appears to be jinxed by some kind of a ‘by-election curse’. Instead of building around its victory in the October by-elections to strategize for 2019, MCP appears to have been undone by the same. The party is now steadily plunging into a cesspool of chaos and anarchy with Chakwera as a helpless bystander. The by-elections victory is now only an insignificant blip that is fast receding into the distance.

As if this is not enough for MCP, the London-based Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has just released a comprehensive intelligence report in which it has predicted a win for the incumbent President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in 2019. In its ‘Briefing Sheet’ and 2018-2022 outlook for Malawi, EIU observed that despite the challenges that Mutharika and the DPP government are facing, he is still likely going to win in 2019.

As has always been the case, the MCP and the usual culprits whose career is to oppose government have risen to dispute these findings (although without any empirical facts, like what EIU has done). The truth, however, is that the EIU is an evidence-based institution and its report is based on very comprehensive understanding of the situation on the ground and analysis, something that continues to elude the loudmouths in the opposition.

The good thing is also that Malawians are able to know and understand lies when they hear them, and will not be held captive by desperate propaganda under the guise of alternative political voice. Malawians know that President Mutharika inherited an almost poisoned chalice in 2014.

Donors had just pulled out budgetary support which accounted to 40 percent of the country’s national budget because of CASHGATE. There was a huge domestic debt and confidence in government was at an all-time low.

Today, the economy is in positive trajectory and enjoys positive growth despite the country experiencing flooding and other acts of God in 2015 and 2016. Inflation is currently in single digits from 24.2 percent in November 2014, and foreign exchange reserves continue to stabilize as a result of prudent macro-economic balancing by the DPP administration, which has allowed the private sector to import raw materials with ease than it was in the past.

Governance institutions are also bustling and functioning under Peter Mutharika and his government. Infrastructure development continues to spread across all the regions of the country and has been a tell-tale sign that Malawi is indeed turning the corner in terms of development.

President Mutharika has also largely kept his campaign promises. His cabinet still remains at 20, and the much touted promise of establishing at least a technical college per district has been fulfilled.

The Malata Subsidy programme and the civil service reforms are also some of the testimonies that it is possible for a political party to deliver on its campaign promises. Mutharika has also just commissioned the power generators, which are slated to add 55 megawatts to the national grid, as a short term measure as other more long-term measures such as the 300 megawatts Kammwamba thermal plant are being implemented.

Mutharika and the DPP will go down in history as the only President who went out of his way to find a lasting solution to the power black-out woes in Malawi than all the presidents before him combined.

These are some of the developments that have come to define the Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika administration and no amount of political tweaking by Dr. Chakwera can vanquish that.

In fact, the report by EIU is an indication that Malawians are aware of the initiatives that government is implementing and can discern between real economic developments from mere political vanity. The other truth is also that this is a wake-up call for Chakwera and his MCP team from their sustained stupor induced by the by-elections wins in last October.

The EIU report will make Chakwera realize that his approach of opposing everything that the DPP government does; of deliberately seeing only negatives even when there are positives in what government is doing has done more harm to him than he could ever imagined. It will make him realize that the approach will not get him government in 2019 and that he must prepare to be disappointed.

Chakwera needs to do more introspection than he is currently doing. He must ask himself why it is that barely three years after blazing on the political scene with the fanfare of breathing new life into an old and tired political party, it is still the same old story of going three steps forward and five steps backwards? Why is it that after all that ‘rebranding’ efforts, the party of Kamuzu is still steeped in the tired mumbo-jumbo of unity, loyalty, obedience and discipline, the same cornerstones that were used by the notorious MCP’s paramilitary Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP) to commit untold atrocities against innocent Malawians? Why is it that despite the rebranding rhetoric, the party’s youths still find space to roam the streets with stubborn notoriety insulting and beating those who they don’t agree with including destroying drones for journalists?

The EIU report maybe will help Chakwera to know that leadership is much more than just speaking English with an American accent. It would teach the retired reverend that transformational leadership is not fearful of dissent in views and opinions. In fact, transformational leadership celebrates dissent because a true leader is enriched with alternative viewpoints.

The report would teach Dr. Chakwera that leadership is about holding the boat together and not purging people with alternative views under the banner of ‘Nkholokolo’. The report would help Chakwera realize that he who thinks he is leading but has no one following him is only taking a walk, and that there is a lot that MCP as a party must do in order to be accepted again by Malawians as an outfit ready to govern this country.

Someone said MCP suffers from a curse that makes it plunge into furious internal bickering every time this country is about to hold general elections. It appears Chakwera is just another ordinary leader whose leadership has once again failed to remove that curse
