Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested in relation to the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, a judicial official says.

Confirming a report by online news publication Mediapart, the official said Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday as part of the investigation into the awarding of the tournament. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss an ongoing investigation.

Platini, a former France soccer great, was being detained at the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police outside Paris.

Claude Gueant, the former secretary general of the Elysee under former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, was also questioned by investigators as part of the probe but was not detained.

French financial prosecutors have been investigating the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and previously questioned former Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

France’s financial prosecutor services opened the investigation on grounds of private corruption, criminal association, influence peddling and benefiting from influence peddling relating to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which were awarded to Russia and Qatar, respectively.

?Platini’s lawyer and adviser did not immediately answer messages from The Associated Press seeking comments.

Much intrigue has centred on Platini’s decision to vote for Qatar.

Blatter, who was Fifa president at the time of the vote in 2010, blamed Platini for backing out of a secret “gentleman’s agreement” to award the 2022 tournament to the United States.

Platini told the AP in 2015 that he “might have told” American officials that he would vote for the United States bid.

However, he changed his mind after a November 2010 meeting, hosted by then-President Nicolas Sarkozy at his official residence in Paris and Qatar’s crown prince, now Emir, Tamin bin Hamad al-Thani.

Platini has long insisted that the meeting did not influence his vote for Qatar less than two weeks later.

“Sarkozy never asked me to vote for Qatar, but I knew what would be good,” he told the AP in 2015.

But Blatter claimed in a 2015 interview with the Financial Times that Platini told him ahead of the World Cup vote: “I am no longer in your picture because I have been told by the head of state that we should consider the situation of France.”

Both Platini and Blatter were toppled from their positions of power at the top of soccer in 2015.

Platini was banned by Fifa for financial misconduct in relation to a US$2 million payment authorised by Blatter – a suspension due to expire in October.

Qatar’s methods to bring the World Cup to the Middle East for the first time have been subject to investigations by Fifa.

American attorney Michael Garcia found that some of Qatar’s conduct “may not have met the standards” required by Fifa but concluded there was no “evidence of any improper activity by the bid team.

Silver laboured into Airtel 2019 Top 8 Final

By Tione Andsen

Silver Strikers Sunday laboured themselves into the final of the  2019 Airtel TOP 8 final after they narrowly edged Master Security 1-0 in a hard fought  semi-final encounter played before impressive crowd at Civo stadium in  Area 9,Lilongwe.

The Central Bankers lone goal was scored in the 27th minute through hard working striker, Michael Tetteh who tapped the ball into the net to set up a final battle against Karonga United,  who sent packing Mzuni on post match penalties 5-4 at Mzuzu stadium on Saturday.

They have booked the second cup final since the cup was introduced in 2017 in which they won and last year they lost in semifinal against Blue eagles 1-0 at the same venue.

Silver dominated the first half with attacking game while Masters came into the game in the last 45 minutes which forced the Bankers to constantly camp in their own half most of the times.

Despite a lively second half, the game was characterized with hard tackling for both sides and there were a lot of stoppages due to injuries and time wasting.

Most fans enjoyed the Ghanaian duo battles that involved Masters Captain Eric Astiga and Silver’s Tetteh and at the end of 90 minutes, Astiga got the man of the match award and pocketed K50, 000 cash.

The overall performance of referee, Ishmael Chizimba left many puzzles as he twice denied masters two penalty calls when Mussa Manyenje was brought down in the box and Silver defender, Trevor Kalema, who was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

Eight minutes into the game, Silver’s midfielder, Victor Limbani had set Thuso Paipi on the edge of the penalty area but his weak shot went straight into the palms of the Masters goalkeeper, Bester Phiri.

A minute later, Masters replied through Manyenje when he got a pass from Cuthbert Sinetre but his shot went wide to signal their first attack of the game.

Silver fans went into wild celebrations in the 27th minute when striker Tetteh planted home a pass from Limbani when he controlled the ball in the six yard box with no master security defender to challenge him and he just slot the ball home to make it 1-0.

Master Security had tough time in their attacking game as Bernard Chimaimba, Amadu Makawa, Juma Yatina and Manyenje could not find a solution to unlock Silver defence marshalled by Yinusa Sheriff ably assisted by Mike Robert, Kalema and Herbert Wayekha.

With six minute to half time, Tetteh has a chance but his effort went wide after being put through by Paipi.

Silver went to recess with a slander lead although fans were kept guessing as to how the game will going to progress as hard tackling was the order of the day and surprisingly despite having so many stoppages but referee Chizinga only added a minute as part of the injury time.

The second half saw rejuvenated Masters as they camped in Sliver’s half and in the 62nd minute when Yatina attempted effort never threatened Silver’s goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali as it went begging wide.

Silver made a change when they rested midfielder, Duncan Nyoni for defender, Hygiene Mwandapeka while master brought in Zelliat Nkhoma for Yatina in the 66th minute.

Master goalie, Phiri made a brilliant save in the 67th minute when Silver’s returnee striker, Khuda Muyaba shot was tamed excellently after he was put through Tetteh close the goal area.

Carlsberg cup final super substitute, Sammy Phiri was intruded into the game for Makawa in 69th minute but six minute later he was guilty of missing a seater in a goal mouth scramble as silver defender failed to clear the lines in one of the dangerous waves of the game

The reaming minute saw Silver’s players killing time as pressure was amounting in their half.

Only two players were shown yellow cards, to Silver’s Tetteh and Masters, Chimaimba.

Masters Head Coach, Abbas Makawa said he was happy with the way his charges played and he believed that soccer fans have seen something worth discussing about my team.

“We have lost the game but officiation has let us down for sure. Several incidents were let scot free and this has put our game plan into an awkward situation,” he lamented.

Silver’s Assistant Coach, Lovemore Fazili acknowledged that it was tough game but they are happy they have won the game to reach the final.

“We expected to have such a tough encounter and it has always been like that for years now. What is most important to us is that we have won the game,” he added.

Bullets tear gassed 1-2……as Eagles move second; TNM Super League

By Tione Andsen

Blue Eagles on a cloudy Saturday afternoon came from behind to register a 2-1 win over disjointed Nyasa Big Bullets in the TNM Super league match played at Area 30’s Nankhaka ground in Lilongwe before a capacity crowd.

Bullets managed to showcase their passing and attacking in the first 40 minutes of the game before Eagles took control of the proceedings and Bullets “Nkumadzulo” tag never came to play.

Eagle’s Captain, Mecium Mhone pulled one back before Bullets central defender, Sankhani Mkandawire scored an own goal (OG) to help the host bang maximum points.

With the win, the Area 30 outfit has moved from fourth position with 14 points from seven games while Kamuzu Barracks have taken over the leadership after they collected maximum points after beating Ntopwa 1-0 through World Nkuliwa’s spot kick and have better goal difference of five

Eagles have inflected Bullets their first loss of the season and rekindled their belief that Nankhaka is fortress and they still remain fifth on the log table with 10 points from six games and Mhone was named man of the match.

Bullets wonder kid. Peter Banda was the player to watch with his dynamic moves which saw him score the opener and had a field day on the right flank which forced Eagles technical panel to make early substitution by resting midfielder, Henry Misinjo for   Jacob Robert and the move stabilized their left flank.

The first seven minutes of the encounter produce nothing tangible until into the eight minute when Bullets midfielder, Henry Kabichi hard drive went over the bar.

Bullets centre forward, Chiukepo Msowoya had a glorious chance in the 17th when he was put through by enterprising right winger, Banda but his shot hit the side netting.

Bullets beat Eagles offside trap in the 27th minutes when defender Charles Petro’s long clearance found Banda and he outpaced  Eagles defenders, Oswald Maonga and Maxwell Munthali before tapping in the ball by beating advancing Eagle’s goalie, John Soko go make it 1-0.

Msowoya was at it again in the 42nd minute when he weak shot went into the palms of the goalie, Soko from the penalty box when Banda had turned a provider.

Eagles leveled the scores with two minutes to break when Mhone connected home Foster Beaton pass eluding Bullets keeper, Ernest Kankhobwe on the near post.

The two teams went for recess when they were tied at 1-1 to the disbelief of Bullets fans taking into account a number of missed opportunities they had squandered through Kabichi, Msowoya, Nelson Kangunje and Patrick Phiri.

The second half saw Bullets bringing in Mike Mkwate for Kangunje to strengthen their midfield which was losing a lot of balls at time with poor passes.

Eagles stretched the lead to 2-1 in the 47th minute, when Mhone shot was deflected into the net by Mkandawire.

Bullets rested Kabichi for Bright Munthali in the 55th minute but the move did not change things as Eagles continued their dominance over the visitors as Bullets fans went into total silence.

Mhone was unlucky in the 69th minute when he connected Schumacher Kuwali’s cross from the left flank but the ball hit the cross bar with no one from eagles to finish off.

Bullets captain, Pilirani Zonda had a horrible second half as Kuwali had stepped up his efforts and look dangerous on counter attacks.

Bullets Coach, Calisto Pasuwa bemoaned the absence of some of the key players in the team due to injuries.

“We are trying to build a new team and today we had used some players who were not on the starting lineup in our last game. We are giving each player a chance to prove themselves because we have so many games to play this year,” he said

“Am very happy that we won the game and collected maximum points and to us this is what we had planned for,” Blue Eagles Coach, Derkleck Msakakuona said.

He praised his charges for putting up much effort in the games which he described as not easy one.

Blue eagles have managed to shot two Blantyre giants without miss as they managed to collect three points from Be Forward Wanderers by beating them 3-1 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Copa America

Copa AmericaMany of the world’s finest strikers are in Brazil to compete in Copa America this month and the race for the Golden Boot looks intriguing. South America has developed a reputation for producing world-class center-forwards in recent years and no other continent can match its overall levels of quality. Neymar is missing the tournament through injury, but several superstars will be in action and it will be interesting to see who tops the scoring charts. These are the leading contenders:

Lionel Messi

The Barcelona captain banged in an incredible 51 goals in 50 games during the 2018/19 season. He fired his team to the league title and cemented his status as one of the greatest players in history, if not the greatest. He has hit 67 goals in 130 appearances for his country, but he is running out of time to win silverware for Argentina. They have been runners-up at the 2014 World Cup and three times in Copa America during his career, but they have never clinched a trophy. He is surely the most devastating forward at this tournament, and a look at the odds at a top bookmaker like Heritage sports will tell you that he is the favorite to win the Golden Boot, but his chances could be scuppered if Argentina does not go far enough. They are great going forward, but poor at the back and weak in midfield, so they may fall short.

Gabriel Jesus

The 22-year-old Man City striker has a strong record for his country, having scored 16 times in 29 games. He is an extremely effective striker as he is blessed with great movement and lethal finishing ability. He may not contribute a great deal in terms of holding the ball up, but you would always back him to enjoy plenty of chances due to his knack of finding space in dangerous areas. With Neymar out, Gabriel will fancy his chances of starting up front for Brazil, possibly alongside the unselfish Roberto Firmino. They are the host nation and favorites to win the tournament, so Gabriel could enjoy plenty of time on the pitch, while the likes of Philippe Coutinho will provide strong service, so he stands a great chance of landing the Golden Boot.

Luis Suarez

Suarez has been one of the best strikers in the world over the past decade and he has won all manner of silverware alongside Messi at Barcelona. He has a great record for Uruguay too, as he has scored 55 goals in 106 games. He is often controversial, as he bites, complains and rubs people up the wrong way, but his talent is undeniable. Suarez is a sensational finisher and he is extremely dynamic in and around the box, so he could well fire his country to glory in this tournament. He won Copa America with Uruguay in 2011 and he will be keen to secure further success this time around.

The Rest

Suarez’s strike partner, Edinson Cavani, is fourth in the betting and he too has a fine record in international football. He has had a stop-start season affected by injuries, but he is a phenomenal finisher, as his record of 134 goals in 186 league games for PSG suggests. Sergio Aguero, the forward who keeps Gabriel out of the Man City team, is next in the betting and he could also enjoy an extremely fruitful tournament. Just like Messi, Suarez, and Cavani, he is approaching the twilight of his career and he will be desperate to secure some international silverware. Firmino is an interesting option, as he does go through bursts of goalscoring form, but his unselfish nature may count against him. Radamel Falcao will lead the line for Colombia and he could make things interesting as they look strong in this tournament. All in all, it looks like a fascinating battle, but the youngster Gabriel could be the man to walk off with the Golden Boot trophy by the end of it.

Sport, a powerful tool for change

A team from England with Rodrick Longwe Malawi coordinator standing on left side at the back

By Rabson Woodwell

Former president of the Republic of South Africa Nelson Mandera described sport as a tool that can be used to develop a community, in this regard, sport, is also a great vehicle of conveying messages about the Good News.

Fulfilling this philosophy, Sport Malawi, a sport organisation ran by lecturers and students from University of Gloucestershire in UK, is implementing its project in three aspects such as; Sport Coaching, Outreach, and Education programs in the country.

The project is in its fourth and final year this year and the first team of the group is in the country who are doing an outreach programme in which they are training church leaders on how they can pass the messages of salvation to people through sport.

One of the senior lecturers and outreach programme leader Mark Wagstaff said for the past three years the programme has been so influential and the participation levels were so impressive.

Wagstaff also said that they believe that preaching to the young ones through sport can help to develop very good character in the youth. He said sport is a game that demands good discipline and the word of God will always help to develop that.

“We therefore, hope that this being the final year, we will have the best training and hopefully, the trainees will indeed deliver in the communities. Development is a gradual change and we don’t expect to have the strong Malawi national Team tomorrow through our programmes but after some years the impact will start to show.

“However, we are so happy to have accomplished our goal in Malawi and our hope is that the faith community will start to use sport as a tool (since sport is so attractive) to send messages about Jesus Christ and save lives.” He said.

Since the inception of this project in Malawi, Rodrick Longwe who is also chairperson of Central Region Youth Football Committee (CRYFC) has been the coordinator of the initiative and he said he is so thankful for the investments that Sport Malawi has invested in Malawi for the past three years.

“These people are so committed and Malawi needs more of them so that we can indeed develop our sport but at the same time also developing other very important aspects of life within sport. I personally like their planning, and segmentation of the programmes, they are really professionals.” Longwe said.

Representative of all the participants of the outreach programmes who is also National Director of Scripture Union of Malawi Amon Chanika, sounded so excited about the positive change that the project has brought.

Chanika said the knowledge and skills gotten from this training will help to change the attitudes of people.

He also said that as an organisation that works closely with the youths and faith based community, they believe that through sport they can also instill unity among the people and since children are the future of Malawi, giving them the word of salvation today will assure us that we will have faithful leaders in future.

“It is our expectation that through the word of God our youths will grow with good discipline and that is going to facilitate their good living but also at the same time benefiting the whole community they live in”, he said.

A-physical-derby-in-Lilongwe-pic-by-Tione-Andsen-Mana

By Tione Andsen

Silver Strikers on Sunday claimed City bragging rights when they defeated their traditional city rivals, Civil Sporting 2-1 in the first round of the TNM Super League played at Area 47 Silver Stadium in Lilongwe before half full capacity.

The Capital City derby never lived up to the expectations of the Lilongwe fans as it was characterized by physical play and a lot of stoppages due to injuries to which at times Salima based referee, Godfrey Nkhakananga was failing to control the proceedings of the game.

Silver Strikers aka the Bankers scored their two goals in the first half through Mike Tetteh and Duncan Nyoni while Civil sporting pulled one back through  Fletcher  Bandawe’s spot kick.

The Area 47 outfit striker, Tetteh was named man of the match was given a miniature trophy and K15, 000 cash.

The Bankers have moved to third position from nine with 11 points from six games and Civil have recorded a third successive defeats and the first after the departure of the deputy head coach, Oscar Kaunda who has a bright start at Be forwards in Blantyre when his team beat Dwangwa United 5-0.

Civil have dropped to position 11 from eight with nine points from six games.

Smarting from a 6-0 drubbing against Nyasa Big Bullets in Blantyre, Civil had no choice to use their second choice keeper, Hastings Banda whose performance in the last eight minute of the first his performance was rated poor while Silver featured their second choice goalie, Charles Thom instead of Brighton Munthali who was with the national team in South Africa for Cosafa Cup.

The Area 47 outfit piled a lot of pressure in the first 13 minutes of the saw looking for an early goal and saw them playing four corners kick without reply.

At a quarter hour mark, the visitors responded through left winger, Kelvin Thotho whose drive narrowly missed the wood work.

Tetteh broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when curved his shot which went over two Civil central defender, Lawrence Chaziya and John Dambuleni, the ball eluded stationed keeper, Banda before hitting the empty net to make it 1-0.

Two minutes later, Civil Captain, Raphael Phiri nearly cancelled the lead when his hard drive went off target after receiving a pass from Innocent Tanganyika.

Silver was awarded a free 25 metres away from the western touchline of the northern goal and from the resultant free kick, the Bankers stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 43rd minute when Nyoni volleyed in a free into the empty net beating stationed out of form Civil Keeper, Banda.

With a minute to go, Civil Captain, Phiri had his effort hitting the cross bar when Silver goalie, Thom was beaten after Bandawe had put his through.

The Bankers were leading 2-0 at half time.

Just two minutes into the second half, Civil Coach France Ndawa rested keeper Banda for Tione Tembo while Silver brought in Levison Maganizo for Ernest Tambe after five minutes.

For the third time of asking Civil Phiri wasting a golden chance in the 56th minute when he unbelievably failed to eluded Silver goal minder, Thom within the six yard box due to poor delivery.

Civil were awarded a penalty in the 59h minutes when silver defender, Mike Robert had brought down Bandwe in the penalty box and Bandawe made no mistlke to pull one back.

The two teams made substitutions, Silver brought in Mike Fodya for Nyoni in the 57th minute wile Civil introduced midfielder, Dan Kumwenda for Blessings Tembo in the 62nd minute and Ranken Mwale for Thotho in the 72nd minute but the changes never brought new life in the game.

“We have lost the game despite playing very well especially in the second half of the game. I normally don’t talk about potions of the game but I must admit today goalkeeping has let us down today,” Civil team manager, Gabriel Chirwa stated.

He said there still more games to play although we have lost a third game in row that’s part of the game, we just have to pull ourselves up.

Silver Strikers team Manager, Itaye Nundwe thanked his charges for playing according to their game plan.

“Am very have that we played well and managed to collect maximum points from our city rivals,” he added.

Last season, Civil managed to beat Silver by the same margin and venue to claim the bragging rights for the Capital City.

KB edge Mlatho 1-0 to go second on the log in TNM Super League

By Tione Andsen

Kamuzu Barracks (KB) Saturday laboured to collect maximum points after narrowly edging Mlatho Mponela 1-0 in the TNM Super League encounter played at Civo stadium in Area 9, Lilongwe.

Kamuzu Barrack’s hot scoring machine, Marshal Maluwa scoring the lone within 54 seconds of the game to silence the visiting Mlatho Mponela.

Maluwa has increased his goal tally to four and is among top leading goal scorers and at the rate of his form he can gun for the top prize at the end of the season.

With the win, Kamuzu Barracks have moved to second position on the log from sixth with 11 points from five games while Mlatho has moved to position 13 from 14 with five points from seven games.

The two week break the league had a negative impact to the players as they looked not fit for the game.

The host only broke the deadlock just 54 seconds into play when Maluwa planted home Sam Gunda’s free kick which was awarded 35 metres away from the goal mouth.

Maluwa nearly made it 2-0 in the 21st minute when he dribbled past two Mponela defenders, Innocent Bottomani and Chuki Hussen but his drive eluded Mlatho keeper Chakonda Majanga and it missed the upright.

Mlatho could have leveled the scorers in the 34th minute when Patrick Banda’s hard drive outside the penalty box was brilliantly saved by Kamuzu Barracks goalie, Bonage Lweya.

The Chiwoko boys went for recess smiling while holding to their 1-0 lead.

Four minutes in the second half Kamuzu Barracks were awarded a penalty by referee, Easter Zimba when Mlatho defender, Semu Banda formerly of Blue Eagles had handled the ball in the penalty box and the resultant spot kick by Maluwa was craftily saved by Mlatho keeper, Majanga.

Mlatho had their penalty appeal turned down by referee, Zimba when the ball hit defender Nation Harazi in the penalty area.

Mlatho fans were denied total celebration for an equalizer in the 54th minute over lapping defender; Portifer Likoswe missed a chance for an equalizer

Both teams made substitutions Kamuzu Barracks brought in Francisco Kadzeka for Ndaona Dani in 51st minute, Maluwa for Manase Chiyesa 73rd minute, Gerald Chingana for Chimwemwe Chisambi 83rd minute while Mlatho pushed in Erick Kaonga for Mustafa Maulana in 52nd minute, Anderson Kumpolota for Sautha Robert in the 80th minute but the second half changes made no impact to the game in order to get more goals.

“Am happy we have managed to collect three points after coming from three weeks break. Although we had problems in coordination but we managed to contain them,” Kamuzu Barracks head coach billy Phambala said.

He said despite missing a penalty kick we cannot blame anybody but that could have given us a chance to improve goal tally.

Mlatho Mponela Head Coach, George Zulu said was not happy with officiation saying it has contributed to their defeat.

“We had penalty call but it was not given while our opponents were given soft penalty to which our keeper saved it,” he added.
