TN Stars humbles Civil Sporting 1-0

By Tione Andsen

TN Stars late, substitute China Chirwa turned super hero of the day when connected home Stain Davies inviting cross with seven minutes to regulation time.

It never rained but poured as Civil Sporting have recorded four consecutive defeats and had an opportunity in the 53rd minute when their penalty taker, attacking midfielder, Isaac Msiska’s spot kick was saved by man of the match, TN Stars goalkeeper, Blackson Kotei.

This is the first defeat at home for Civil and they recorded three away defeats against Mighty Tigers 1-0, Nyasa Big Bullets 6-0 and Silver Strikers 1-0 and could this be Oscar Kaunda’s departure effect on part of the Servants.

Civil Sporting have dropped to position 12 from 11 with nine points from seven games while TN Stars have dislodged Bullets on fourth position with 16 points from eight games.

Should this be a warning for Civil, by recalling to what happened to them in 2015 soccer season where they were relegated but they managed returned through mutual arrangement with EPAC  management.

The first opening minutes the game was a balanced affair until in the 10th minute when the game was stopped after referee, Agnes Chamayere had noted that TN Stars keeper, Kotei was wearing   a green top jersey which looked similar to the jerseys for Civil players.

TN Stars goal minder, Kotei rushed to the dressing room without getting permission from the referee and when he returned to the pitch, he was shown a yellow card for unsporting behaviour.

The closest chance in the first half came in the 38th minute when right winger, Tonic Viyuyi was put through Martin Msewa but his effort was parried over the bar by Civil’s keeper, Blessings Kameza.

The teams remained deadlocked after 45 plus four added minutes when they went for recess.

Civil Sporting got a life line in the 53rd minute when TN Stars midfielder, Trouble Banda was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty box by referee, Chamayere.

The resultant spot kick taken by Msiska was calmly saved by TN Stars goalie, Kotei.

Two minutes later, Civil Sporting made double substitutions, they brought in towering striker, Fletcher Bandawe and Timothy Chitedze for Msiska and Charles White respectively.

Eight minutes later, TN Stars introduced fresh legs of Mabvuto Chipolopolo and Laurent Banda for Viyuyi and Hope Siwu while Civil pushed in Timothy Silwimba for injured Lanken Mwale in the 72nd minute.

With only nine minutes to go, TN Stars engaged the services of Chirwa for Patrick Fia and the move produced wonders for the visitors within minutes.

Chirwa first touch of the game saw him planting home Davies cross from the right flank after he dribbled past Civil’s left back, Willard Dickson to make it 0-1.

Civil Sporting Team Manager, Gabriel Chirwa said that, “We are not happy with the outcome of this game as a team. We played well but we failed to score and at the end se have been punished.”

He suggested that team management needs to sit down with the players to find out the really problem with the team.

“It not a fluke win over Civil, we knew it that we will be able to collect maximum points over them right from our training ground,” Technical Director for TN Stars, Mike Banda said.

He claimed that every fixture they play against Civil, they have an upper hand over them although they are considered to be one of the big teams in the country.

Euro 2020 to be the Biggest European Football Championship Ever

Football fans in Malawi were able to watch every Euro 2016 game live, thanks to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. Next year’s European championship should once again be broadcast on national TV. For those who don’t have access to television, there are many options for live streaming Euro 2020 matches – including through online bookmakers.

Euro 2020 will be the biggest European football championship ever, with 24 teams to compete in a month-long tournament in 12 countries. Defending champions Portugal will face a major challenge to hold on to their crown, as they and 23 other teams criss-cross Europe in search of glory in what is the tournament’s 60th anniversary.

Host cities are Rome (Italy), Baku (Azerbaijan), St Petersburg (Russia), Copenhagen (Denmark), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Bucharest (Romania), London (England), Glasgow (Scotland), Bilbao (Spain), Dublin (Republic of Ireland), Munich (Germany), and Budapest (Hungary). The final will be played at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 12, 2020.

Before Euro 2020, there’s the Africa Cup of Nations 2019

Euro 2020 is a year away, but the Africa Cup of Nations is just around the corner. The tournament will be played in four cities in Egypt from June 21 to July 19. Malawi won’t be there, but 24 other teams will be competing to be named the champions of Africa.

The updated betting odds show Egypt is a strong favourite to take home a record eighth African title. The Egyptians are paying around 5.00 at online bookmakers, well ahead of second-ranked Senegal, who are paying around 7.00. Other realistic contenders include Ghana, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast.

South Africa and Zambia are the only teams from southern Africa to have won the Africa Cup of Nations. Zambia failed to qualify for this year’s tournament. South Africa are the likeliest contender from the region, although they are well back on around the 13th line of betting. Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, and Madagascar will also compete in the tournament but none of them are likely to present a serious challenge, judging by the betting odds.

An erial duo by Tigers and Silver players in Silver’s goal area pic by Tione Andsen (Mana)

By Tione Andsen

Silver Strikers Saturday came from behind to force a 1-1 draw against enterprising Mighty Tigers in the TNM Super League match played at Silver Stadium in Area 47, Lilongwe.

The Central Bankers have dropped two valuable points and were lucky to come out unscratched after Tigers had an opportunity twice in each half to bury the game but were saved by the up left.

Tiger’s striker, Shasimbiwe Kanyika tormented Silver defence marshalled by Yunusa Sherrif and ably assisted by Trevor Kalema, Mike Robert and Herbert Wayekha due to his dangerous counter attacks.

Fans were more entertained more in the second half as opposed to first which was immensely physical with a lot of stoppages due to hard tackling from both sides and Referee; Chidziwitso Simbi seemed to have lost control of the game.

With the draw, Silver Strikers have 12 points from seven games while Tigers have 13 points from 10 games

Tigers went into lead just five minutes into the game when Kanyika planted home after he eluded Silver goalie, Charles Thom.

Six minutes later, Kanyika was on fire when outpaced Silver defence and sent a lob which went over Silver goalie, Thom but the ball hit the up left.

Silver’s right back, Robert had a chance in the 16th minute when he volleyed over Thuso Paipi’s corner kick.

The Central Bankers levelled the scores in the 19th minute, when winger Duncan Nyoni’s power packed direct free kick from 25 metre out went in beating stationed Tigers keeper, Christopher Mikuwa after he was brought down by Tigers defender, Nickson Mwase.

Tigers left winger, Tony Mbulu was put through by Chikaiko Baston and he managed his way through Silver defence but his effort went over the cross bar in the 36th minute.

Two minutes into added time, silver defender, Robert headed wide Paipi’s corner kick and the two teams went for recess when they were tied at 1-1.

The second half the two teams showcased good passing game to the amazement of many that came to the stadium.

Silver’s right winger, Paipi could have stretched the lead in the 48th minute when his goal bound header from Nyoni’s cross was blocked on the goal line by Tigers, keeper, Mikuwa.

Tigers had an upper hand with their marvelous displays of passing game by Bonda Mpinganjira, Captain, Willy Sayenda, Baston and Mbulu while Silver’s Michael Tetteh, Khuda Muyaba, Young Chimodz Jnr, Sherriff and Victor Limbani kept on defusing pressure.

In the 69th minute, Tigers made a substitution, they pulled out Matias Nyirenda  for Edwin Carlos, whose first touch was delight to watch and put through Mbulu whose volley went over silver goalie, Thom to hit the up left with one Tigers player to finish it off.

Witht seven minute to time, silver made a double substitution, they rested tired, Paipi and injured Muyaba for Levison Maganizo and Mphatso Philemon respectively

Silver’s goalie, Thom brilliantly saved Tiger’s Baston’s inviting cross into the danger zone to deny the visitors to collect maximum points.

On dot of full time, Tetteh missed a golden opportunity in the six yard box at the mercy of Tigers keeper, Mikuwa when he connected over from close range.

Silver Strikers Team Manager, Itaye Nundwe admitted that his charges did not play their usual game and this made them fail to utilize the home ground advantage.

He added that, “The quick goal which was scored by Tigers disturbed our game plan and it took long time for our players to come back into the game.”

“It was a good game and fans have watched a very entertaining game and tigers proved that they are a better side,” Mighty Tigers Technical Director, Robin Alufandika said.

He said Silver appeared to have a 12th player on their side because decisions which were being made put our players on the receiving end.

Tigers will face Master Security in Dedza on Sunday, a second away assignment for the weekend.

2019 Africa Cup of Nation Update; Host Egypt beats Zimbabwe, 1-0

Mahmoud Trezeguet

CAIRO-(MaraviPost)-Hosts Egypt made the ideal start to the Africa Cup of Nations by beating Zimbabwe in the opening game of the tournament in Cairo.

Mahmoud Trezeguet scored the only goal of the game with a curled finished just before half time.

Liverpool forward Mo Salah came close to doubling his side’s lead in the second half but his low drive was kept out by Zimbabwe keeper Edmore Sibanda.

Ovidy Karuru had Zimbabwe’s best chance with a 30-yard strike late on.

According to BBC, This year’s tournament is the biggest Africa Cup of Nations ever with 24 teams, and the first to be played in Europe’s summer.

It got off to a spectacular start, with the fans inside the 75,000 capacity Cairo International Stadium treated to an eye-catching opening ceremony that featured giant pyramids on the pitch, elegant dancers forming the shape of a pharaoh’s face and culminating in a huge fireworks display.

But the game itself failed to match that level of sparkle, with Egypt dominating for large periods without troubling Sibanda in the Zimbabwe goal often.

Mo Salah
There was plenty of support for Mo Salah in the stands

Salah was a lively presence in the first half but put a number of efforts wide of goal and while he did manage to get one shot on target before the interval it was a routine save for Sibanda.

Just as Zimbabwe were enjoying their best spell of half, Egypt took the lead. A neat one-two allowed Trezeguet to break into the box before cutting inside his marker and then despatching a clinical effort into the far corner.

From then on Egypt were comfortable rather than dominant.

Salah forced a decent save out of Sibanda midway through the second half after being picked out by Trezeguet’s defence-splitting pass.

The Liverpool man then raced through just before full time but was this time denied by substitute goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, who had come on for the injured Sibanda with 10 minutes to go.

The win puts Egypt top of Group A, which also contains DR Congo and Uganda. Those two sides face each other on Saturday at the same ground.

2019 Africa Cup of Nations: Players’ union wants four drinks breaks a game due to extreme heat

Africa Cup of Nations matches should have four drinks breaks because of “extremely challenging” weather conditions, says one players’ union.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) plans to have two cooling breaks per match, in line with Fifa regulations, but Fifpro wants double that.

According to BBC, temperatures are forecast to reach up to 40C (104F) in host nation Egypt.

“The health and safety of the players must come first,” Fifpro said.

“Any play in temperatures over 34C would mean there is an extremely high risk of thermal injury.”

In addition to CAF’s existing plans to have drinks breaks in the 30th and 70th minutes, Fifpro proposes players should also rest in the 15th and 60th minutes of matches.

Seven of the group games, including opener Egypt v Zimbabwe, take place in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez – three of the hottest and most humid areas of the country.

Fifpro has also contacted CAF to ask to consider delaying the start of early evening kick-offs “if the heat and humidity make conditions dangerous for players”.

The first Fifa-sanctioned cooling break took place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, a last-16 match between the Netherlands and Mexico, although plans were first rejected for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea and there were problems with the heat in USA 1994.

British Boxing Is at a Crossroads

Andy Ruiz Jr produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of heavyweight boxing to rip Anthony Joshua’s IBF

In the last few years, Britain has been seen as the home of boxing by many. The huge crowds attending fights, large pay-per-view (PPV) numbers and the gaming atmosphere are what makes British boxing unique from the rest. However, boxing in the UK has hit the rocks in 2019 as most British boxers have started venturing in the American Market.

Fighters like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have both jumped ship to launch their fighting careers in the US. That has resulted in abysmal fight cards in the UK, with only pay-per-view fight this year. While AJ Vs. Ruiz fight was PPV, the fight took place in the US, meaning the British boxing enthusiasts and betway bettors had to stay awake till the early morning hours.

Chris Eubank Jr James DeGale DeGale vs. Eubank Jr.

This year, the only PPV fight in England was James Degale Vs. Chris Eubank JR. However, the match didn’t even feature on BT sports or Sky. That was a major setback on British boxing and a huge embarrassment for Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren.

While boxing betting fans will argue that at least there are several free boxing, it also means that the fight cards are not very impressive.  The fights are extremely one-sided, and most of them don’t have very good odds, though bookies like Betway are still trying to make them worthwhile. As such, the 90,000 British fans that Anthony Joshua left to fight in an American arena have no choice than to watch undercard fighters.

It was only last year that British boxing fans were watching Joshua Vs. Parker, Bellew Vs. Haye, groves Vs. Eubank JR and Whyte Vs. Parker. Today, they get the chance to watch Anthony Yards Vs. Travis Reeves and Ted Cheeseman Vs. Sergio Garcia.

With the recent developments in British boxing, it’s extremely clear that Eddie Hearn is more concerned with his billion dollar deal with on-demand sports streaming channel DAZN than Sky Sports. That translates into a great deal of cash, so it’s only fair that he is focusing his efforts there. As such, Hearn has a bigger fish to fry with the thousands of fans that aided Matchroom to the pinnacle of boxing in Britain.

As UK fighters continue to abandon ship, the British boxing has reached crossroads.  That shows that one of these young stars will need to fill the void left by the big names or the sport will be heading back to the early days of Haye Vs. Audrey Harrison and Cleverly Vs. Bellew 2.

In light of the recent developments, many argue that boxing in England has fallen to the early days. That’s because Tom Schwartz Vs. Tyson Fury is the worst PPV in the history of British boxing. Nonetheless, there’s a semi-decent fight card scheduled for July 20th when Dillian Whyte will take on the unbeaten champion Oscar Rivas. Dave Allen will also take on David Price, but for them to be the co-main PPV event, it’s a huge indicator of how far boxing has fallen in England.
