Malawi Queens through to 2nd round in Netball World Cup

Malawi Netball

Malawi national netball team, the Queens are through to the preliminary round second stage at the ongoing Netball World Cup where they have been slotted in Group F after finishing as runners-up in Group B.

The Queens clinched the second position after a convincing 65-41 victory over Barbados in their last group match.

Shooter Joyce Mvula clinched the Player of the Match Award for the second consecutive game.

The United Kingdom-based Manchester Thunder player said she was excited to win the second award after bagging her first accolade at the tournament in the match against Singapore on Saturday.

“I just want to thank my fellow players. I couldn’t do it myself,” Mvula said in a post-match interview monitored on SuperSport.

After starting the group stage with a loss to New Zealand, the Queens bounced back to beat Singapore 87-38 on Saturday.

New Zealand have finished the first stage with 100 percent record after beating both Barbados and Singapore to finish top of the group.

International Netball Federation (INF) has introduced a complex format for the Netball World Cup.

In the new format, teams have to be at their best as they battle out in four round robin stages.

This is in contrast with the 2015 tournament format which although it had three stages, the preliminary stage was not subdivided into a further two stages.

The top three teams in each group will progress to the preliminaries stage two where the top three teams from groups A and B will form group F, and the top three teams from groups C and D will form Group G.

The bottom four finishers from groups A to D will compete for 13th to16th places in Group E.

In the second stage, Malawi’s Queens are now in Group F which has six teams—Group A winners Australia, Group B winners New Zealand, Barbados who finished third in Group B, Zimbabwe and Northern Ireland.

The winners and runners up will proceed into play-offs and the others play the same position from Group G in a placement match.

Assistant coach Whyte Mlilima said the Queens are determined to go all the way as the team, which has been relegated to position nine on INF rankings, is trying to squeeze in top six .

“For Malawi, the sky is the limit,” he said. “We are determined to go all the way as we try to reclaim our positions among the top teams.”

The second round of the preliminaries stage will be played from today to July 18 while the play-offs and placings will be played from July 19 to 21.

Algeria silences Nigeria reaches 2019 AFCON finals

CAIRO-(MaraviPost)-Algeria on Sunday night beat Nigeria 2-1 to qualify for the finals of 2019 Africa Cup of Nation.

Mahrez’s superb free-kick in injury time puts Algeria into the finals of AFCON

This means Nigeria will play for a third place on this coming Wednesday against Tunisia.

Algeria will face Senegal in the finals of the tournament on July 19.

AFCON 2019 semi-final fixtures set

AFCON 2019 news, AFCON 2019 Live scores

The 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, the continent’s biggest football showpiece is underway in Egypt. It kicked off on June 21 after a spectacular opening ceremony.

Hosts, Egypt, went on to beat Zimbabwe by a lone goal in the first game of the tournament. After twelve match days and two days of rest, the round of 16 was dispatched leaving eight teams. The quarter-finals played over four days have further whittled the number down to four.

As at July 11, there are only four teams left in contention. The first to fourth will be known between them. They are Senegal (Teranga lions), Nigeria (Super Eagles), Algeria (The Foxes) and Tunisia (Carthage Eagles).

Semi-final fixtures

  • Nigeria vs. Algeria – Sunday July 14, 2019
  • Senegal vs. Tunisia – Sunday July 14, 2019
  • Winners meet in final slated for Friday July 19, 2019
  • Losers will play in the third-place game on 17 July, 2019

The final could potentially be an all West African or all North African affair. It could also be a battle between the West and North – Africa’s perennial football power blocs.

Senegal is the only team that has yet to taste AFCON glory in the quartet. Nigeria have won it thrice whiles Algeria and Tunisia have each won it once.

Nigeria late goal sends South Africa packing in 2019 AFCON quarter finals

William Troost-Ekong
William Troost-Ekong’s goal put Nigeria into the semi-finals

CAIRO-(MaraviPost)-William Troost-Ekong scored a dramatic late winner to send Nigeria into the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final at the expense of South Africa.

Samuel Chukwueze hit the opener as he controlled Alex Iwobi’s cross, before scoring at the second attempt.

Bongani Zungu equalised with a header initially ruled out for offside before VAR replays showed a free-kick hit a Nigerian player on the way to him.

But Udinese’s Troost-Ekong bundled home from close range late on to win it.

His finish was into an empty net after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams totally missed Moses Simon’s corner.

Nigeria face Ivory Coast or Algeria in Sunday’s second semi-final (20:00 BST).

According to BBC, the Super Eagles were deserved winners and led through Villarreal youngster Chukwueze’s first goal for his country. They should have been ahead by more when Williams pushed Peter Etebo’s free-kick onto the bar.

Zungu’s goal was the first in the Africa Cup of Nations given by the VAR, which has just been introduced for the quarter-finals. It looked offside initially but Percy Tau’s free-kick hit Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo on the way on to Amiens midfielder Zungu’s head.

The game looked set for extra time before Williams flapped at a cross to leave Troost-Ekong with a simple finish.

Senegal, who beat Benin 1-0 earlier on Wednesday, play either Madagascar or Tunisia in the other semi-final.

AFCON 2019: NIGERIA vs SOUTH AFRICA – WHO IS TB JOSHUA SUPPORTING?

In the build-up to the crucial quarter-final clash between Nigeria and South Africa at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, a name surprisingly cropping up is that of influential Nigerian cleric T.B. Joshua.

“I am appealing to T.B. Joshua to please pray for our team before the match tomorrow,” wrote Nigerian Itunu Komolafe on social media. “We can’t afford to crash out like Ghana, Cameroon and even the host country, Egypt!”

“Prophet T.B. Joshua is a spiritual father to both Nigeria and South Africa; I know the man of God will be neutral,” posited Bongani during an opinion poll by a local radio station in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

In a confrontational spat between rival supporters on Twitter, Emma Aboyi suggested victory for the Super Eagles would avenge the spate of xenophobic killings of Nigerians in South Africa.

Kagisho retorted by singling out the ‘attack’ on Joshua’s church in 2014 which led to multiple South African fatalities.

TB Joshua
sconduct against prominent Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua

“Dear Nigeria, our people that were killed in TB Joshua’s church are still fresh in our minds… We are dedicating our win tonight against Nigeria to them,” tweeted Mawara, another user posting a video of the infamous ‘plane’ which encircled the building before its tragic implosion.

T.B. Joshua is no stranger when it comes to the fusion of spirituality and sports in Africa.

Indeed, the controversy associated with his accurate sporting predictions – coupled with the spirited backlash from fanatic fans – led the cleric to officially ‘resign’ from public ‘football prophecies’ in 2013 after he accurately declared Nigeria would overcome Burkina Faso to take the AFCON trophy.

Perhaps the most contentious of his predictions was Nigeria’s missing out on AFCON qualification a year earlier.

“What I saw was not favourable towards Nigeria,” the cleric told congregants on Sunday 2nd October 2011, six days before the Super Eagles crucial qualifying match between Guinea, adding that he saw celebrations amongst the opposition and the team to ‘score first’ would qualify.

After Guinea secured qualification at the expense of Nigeria – following a last-gasp equaliser after their initial goal was cancelled by two goals from the Super Eagles – the public backlash against Joshua even spiralled to the point that threats of attacking his church were posted online by incensed fans.

“The prediction of Prophet TB Joshua really affected us,” the Super Eagle’s star striker Osaze Odemwengie admitted to reporters after their shock ousting.

In Nigeria’s absence, the ensuing competition was equally ‘foreseen’ as Joshua declared minutes before the final between Zambia and Ivory Coast that the Southern Africans would triumph.

“This victory is for a country you are not expecting,” he told congregants at The SCOAN on Sunday February 12th 2012, adding that an error in the 25th minute of the second half where a ball is hit over the bar would prove pivotal.

Didier Drogba’s missed penalty in the 70th minute of the closely contested match – where the ball ballooned wildly over the bar – was a decisive moment in the goalless draw, with Zambia eventually triumphing on penalties to claim a historic maiden victory.

Ghanaians will equally remember Joshua for his ‘spiritual support’ in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009, where the Black Satellites triumphed against the favourites Brazil to claim the title.

Coach Sellas Tetteh shocked the football world with his admission he was in regular communication with the Nigerian cleric during the final match, emphasising his prayers and spiritual guidance were instrumental to his team’s historic victory.

“He told me we would win the trophy before the tournament and on the day of the game, he again predicted it,” Tetteh told Ghanaian media afterwards, adding the cleric had mentioned specific details pertaining events that unfolded in the tense match.

When South Africa historically hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010, Joshua is said to have prophesied the results of the opening and final match – in which Spain took the title – as well as Nigeria’s last-gasp qualification for the tournament.

On Sunday 11th October 2009, he stated Nigeria would emerge victorious in their qualifying match against Mozambique, specifying a ‘headed goal’ would earn them victory.

The prediction materialised courtesy of an Obinna Nsofor header in the dying seconds of the match, securing the Super Eagle’s qualification.

With Joshua’s repertoire of accurate predictions, the string of famous players who have visited him for counsel and the immense influence he wields in both South Africa and Nigeria – it is perhaps no surprise both teams are seeking his blessings ahead of their crucial encounter.

Tunisia sends Ghana packing in AFCON through penalties

Tunisia
Tunisia are in the quarter-finals without winning a game in 90 minutes

Tunisia beat Ghana on penalties to set up an Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final with Madagascar.

Goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha was the hero, coming on for the shootout and saving Caleb Ekuban’s penalty.

Tunisia had been seconds away from winning in 90 minutes, but substitute Rami Bedoui headed into his own net in injury time, with his first touch.

They had led in Ismailia through Taha Yassine Khenissi’s goal from Wajdi Kechrida’s cross.

Leeds striker Ekuban was the only player to fail with his kick in the shootout, with Ferjani Sassi scoring the winning kick.

Tunisia now face Madagascar, ranked 108th in the world, on Thursday, despite not having won a game in 90 minutes. The Eagles of Carthage drew all three group games before their penalty shootout win over Ghana.

The Black Stars dominated the opening stages of the game, and Nuhu Kasim’s header hit the outside of the post.

They had a first-half goal controversially disallowed. Thomas Partey fed Jordan Ayew, who crossed for his brother Andre to score a backheel.

The referee ruled the goal out for a Partey handball, with VAR not coming in until the quarter-finals, but the Atletico midfielder controlled the ball with his chest.

Tunisia took control when Wahbi Khazri, who was an injury doubt, came on in the 68th minute. Moments later his corner was headed on to the bar by Khenissi.

The breakthrough came as Khazri backheeled the ball into the path of Kechrida, whose cross was swept home via the post by Khenissi.

Ghana’s Mubarak Wakaso had a 30-yard shot tipped on to the post and then had a hand in the equaliser.

Defender Bedoui came on for Khenissi in the last minute to help them see the game out – but headed Wakaso’s free-kick into his own net with his first involvement.

Both sides had chances in extra time, but failed to take them, so the game went to penalties.

United States beats the Netherlands 2-0 to win its fourth Women’s World Cup title

United States beats the Netherlands 2-0 to win its fourth Women’s World Cup title

LYON, France (AP) — The United States women’s soccer team was as good as American players promised — maybe even better.

Especially Megan Rapinoe, the pink-haired captain who emerged with the Golden Ball as top player, the Golden Boot as top scorer and a world-wide stature as a champion for gender equity.

The U.S. won its record fourth Women’s World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday night when Rapinoe converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the second half and Rose Lavelle added a goal.

BOX SCORE:  UNITED STATES 2, NETHERLANDS 0

Rapinoe scored in the 61st minute after a video review determined Stefanie van der Gragt had fouled Alex Morgan with a kick to the shoulder in the penalty area.

Two days past her 34th birthday, Rapinoe slotted the ball past goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal for her sixth goal of the tournament. The oldest player to score in a Women’s World Cup final, she struck a familiar victorious pose with arms outstretched.

“It’s surreal. I don’t know how to feel like now. It’s ridiculous,” Rapinoe said. “We’re crazy and that’s what makes us so special. We just have no quit in us. We’re so tight, and we’ll do anything to win.”

Lavelle, at 24 the team’s up-and-coming star, added her third goal of the tournament on an 18-yard left-footed shot in the 69th after a solo run from the center circle.

“She’s superstar, not even in the making, she’s straight up superstar at this point,” Rapinoe said.

Fans, many dressed in red, white and blue, chanted “Equal Pay!” at the final whistle , a reminder players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March claiming gender discrimination.

Rapinoe drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump during the tournament by saying she and teammates would refuse to visit the White House, part of the team’s wider push for gender equity. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio needed just a few seconds after the final whistle to invite the team to a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon on Heroes in Manhattan on Wednesday.

The Americans never trailed in the tournament and set records with 26 goals and a 12-game World Cup winning streak dating to 2015. U.S. coach Jill Ellis became the first coach to lead a team to two Women’s World Cup titles, and the U.S. joined Germany in 2003 and 2007 as the only repeat champions.

“It’s just chemistry. They put their hearts and soul into this journey,” Ellis said. “They made history.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino handed over the trophy, a stark contrast to four years ago in Canada, when then-president Sepp Blatter was a no-show as U.S. prosecutors investigated corruption in soccer’s governing body. While the U.S. added fourth star to its jersey, Germany is the only nation that has even two.

With confidence and brashness that some called even arrogant — triggering a backlash that the angry response was sexist — this American team established a standard of excellence that exceeded the U.S. champions of 1991, 1999 and 2015, becoming a goal for all others to match. Former American players joined the current generation on the field for the postgame celebration.

Alyssa Naeher, the 31-year-old who succeeded Hope Solo in goal, faced repeated questions entering the tournament but allowed just three goals in the tournament and finished with her fourth shutout.

The U.S. had scored within the first 12 minutes of its previous six matches in the tournament but the European champions sat back to keep their defensive shape and kept the score 0-0 through the first half.

Video review, adopted by FIFA for the men’s World Cup last year, showed its impact when Stephanie Frappart, the first woman to referee a men’s Ligue 1 match, went to the screen at the side of the field and then signaled toward the spot.

Rapinoe, who missed Tuesday’s semifinal win over England with a hamstring injury, became the first woman to score on a penalty kick during a Women’s World Cup final, her 50th goal in 158 international appearances. She matched Morgan and England’s Ellen White for most goals in the tournament and won the Golden Ball based on fewer minutes.

Rapinoe was given a standing ovation by the crowd when she subbed out in the 79th minute. The crowd of 57,900 at Stade de Lyon for Le Grand Finale included French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Americans opened the tournament with a record 13-0 rout of lowly Thailand, triggering debate over whether the celebrations after each goal were excessive. Carli Lloyd responded the next match by following a goal with a polite golf clap. The Morgan stirred it up again when she scored against England with a tea sip, pinkie outstretched

Malawi’s FA Boss Nyamilandu faces protest for his third bid in office

Fans demonstrate against Walter NyamilanduENOUGH OF WALTER—Fans fly placards at BNS

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Protests against the reign of Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, took a new dimension when a section of fans displayed placards during the Airtel Top 8 final between Silver Strikers and Karonga United at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe on Saturday.

This comes amid reports that Nyamilandu is contemplating seeking re-election at the expiry of his fourth term in December this year.

Last year, Nyamilandu indicated that he would not stand again but recently said he would make his statement on the matter soon.

Upon his entry into the stadium, Nyamilandu was greeted with a chorus of boos by a section of fans who held some placards.

The fans, dressed in white T-shirts with the message ‘Walter Must Fall’, carried placards with messages against the Fam boss.

Another message read; “Utsogoleri Sukhala Wamuyaya. A Walter Pumani Masaimenso” [leadership does not last forever. Walter do not stand again].

Nyamilandu, who is also a Fifa Council member, told The Daily Times that he was not moved by the protests, insisting that he would not make a decision under duress.

“I am not moved at all. There is too much hatred around and I will not fall for it. The world needs love to heal and not for personal egos to flourish. We should all learn to be civilised in the manner we conduct business. It is very unfortunate that people can stoop so low as to be used to tarnish the image of other people,” he said.

Reports suggest that Nyamilandu met with regional associations’ chairpersons before and after the final.

Southern Region Football Association Chairperson, Raphael Humba, asked for more time to comment on the matter while his Northern Region counterpart, Lameck Khonje, did not answer his mobile phone after several attempts.

Central Region Football Association Chairperson, Austin Ajawa, confirmed meeting Nyamilandu but declined to disclose details of the meeting.

“We meet on several occasions and there is nothing strange with having a meeting with him,” Ajawa said.

With Nyamilandu still on the hot seat, most aspirants are yet to come in the open on their intentions.

So far, only Karonga United Chairperson Alufeyo Chipanga has declared interest in contest for the Fam presidency but reports indicate that incumbent Fam First Vice President James Mwenda is also vying for the same seat.

Other personalities, such as Pikawo Ngalamila and Fellister Dossi are interested in contested as Executive Committee members.

Incumbent executive committee members Daud Ntanthiko and Jabbar Alide have expressed interest in contesting for the First Vice Presidency whereas Lameck Khonje is challenging incumbent Second Vice President Othaniel Hara.

Nyamilandu has served as Fam President for the past 16 years.

Marvelous; Madagascar stun Nigeria 2-0…both qualify to 2019 AFCON to round of 16

Madagascar remained unbeaten at the Africa Cup of Nations, ending the group stage with a surprise 2-0 win over Nigeria

ALEXANDRIA-(MaraviPost)-Madagascar on Sunday shocked football lovers in the continent after beating the giant Nigeria  2-0.

Madagascar which has been taken as under dogs in the African Cup of Nation group B of the tournament.

This means that Madagascar has qualified to the group of 16 teams in the tournament.

Nigeria has also qualify as runners-up, of course, but with this result came as a huge shock to them.

Africa Cup of Nations newcomers Madagascar pulled off a stunning upset of Nigeria on Sunday with a 2-0 win over the three-time former champions to clinch a place in the last 16.

Lalaina Nomenjanahary gave Madagascar a shock 12th-minute lead in Alexandria after pouncing on ponderous defending, jolting a side ranked 63 places above them in the world.

Charles Andriamatsinoro sealed the victory in front of CAF president and Madagascar native Ahmad Ahmad with a heavily deflected free-kick on 53 minutes for his second goal in three games in Egypt.

The Indian Ocean islanders had to come through a preliminary round just to reach the qualifying competition but will advance as winners of Group B ahead of Nigeria, with Guinea hoping to progress as one of four best third-place finishers following a 2-0 win over Burundi in Cairo.

Defeat for Nigeria likely sets up an eye-catching clash with either holder Cameroon or four-time winners Ghana in the next round, while Madagascar will take on a team that finishes third from either Group A, C or D.

Having already qualified after back-to-back 1-0 victories, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr made five changes to the side that overcame Guinea in their second game with Samuel Kalu handed his first start of the tournament following last week’s collapse in training due to severe hydration.

Yet after a comfortable start, Nigeria gifted their opponents a goal completely against the run of play when a poor pass from John Ogu put Leon Balogun in trouble, with Nomenjanahary pinching the ball on the edge of the area and coolly dancing round Ikechukwu Ezenwa to slot home.

Kalu bent a shot wide of the far post in response for Nigeria, whose penalty appeals were ignored when Ahmed Musa tumbled to the ground after trying to skip past goalkeeper Melvin Adrien on the half-hour.

French coach Nicolas Dupuis, who combines the role with his job at a lower-league club in his homeland, has worked wonders with a Madagascar side that qualified for a first Cup of Nations by finishing above Equatorial Guinea and Sudan.

– Guinea faces anxious wait –
They doubled their lead early in the second half here when Andriamatsinoro’s set-piece flicked off substitute Wilfred Ndidi and left Ezenwa stranded as the ball sailed into the net.

Ndidi belatedly registered Nigeria’s first shot on target just before the hour with a curling effort straight at Adrien, although Anicet Andrianantenaina nearly bagged a third as Ezenwa smothered on the line after an inviting Andriamatsinoro cross.

While Madagascar became the first debutants to advance beyond the group stage since Cape Verde in 2013, they will be without midfielder Marco Ilaimaharitra for their next game after he collected a late yellow card, his second in three matches.

In contrast, fellow newcomers Burundi bowed out without a single goal or point after a 2-0 loss to Guinea.

Burundi’s hopes suffered a huge blow when Christophe Nduwarugira was sent off on 12 minutes in the capital after a foul as last man, and Mohamed Yattara stepped up for Guinea with both goals to leave them facing a nervous wait for a spot in the last 16.

Silver nearly went into lead in the 16th minute, when winger, Thuso Paipi’s inviting cross was blasted wide by Khuda from closer range with Karonga goalie, Happy Msowoya at his mercy.

Fans were privileged to watch midfield battle that involved Silver’s captain, Young Chimodzi Jnr and Karonga’s, Andrea as both players were on their toes to gain supremacy at the heart of the pitch.

Karonga first had effort was taken in the 37th minute when Seleman long range drive tasted the strength of Silver’s goal minder, Brighton Munthali.

With only three minutes to break, Muyaba broke the deadlock when he planted home a loose ball from the resultant corner kick after the Karonga defence of Pilirani Thulu, Malema, Azizi Mwakifuna went to bed.

It was happy break for the entire Silver family as they had found a relief after Karonga had on several occasions had threatened to take control of the game.

Karonga’s Chrispine Mhango wasted a golden opportunity in the 50th minute when he shot wide after being put through by Seleman on the left flank of the northern goal.

The visitors, made a double substitution in the 52nd minute, when they rested Gule Mwaluska and Andrea for Bernard Msiska and Lottie Mwakisulu respectively.

Silver’s Michael Tetteh had an opportunity to increase his goal tally in the 57th minute when he was put through by Muyaba but his effort went wide with keeper to beat.

Silver pulled out Paipi and Levison Maganizo in the 65th minute for Victor Limbani and Kondwani Mwaila in order to contain the pressure Karonga boys were piling mostly in the midfielder row.

With 15 minutes to go, Karonga broke loose on the right flank when Lungu had played a pass to Khumbo Msowoya and his goal bound shot saved was brilliantly saved by Munthali to deny then any equalizer.

“We expected to have such a tough game with Karonga United and they have played well in the final showing that they are capable too,” Silver’s Assistant Coach, Lovemore Fazili admitted.

He said what was important for them during the cup final was to score and win the game and this was exactly what have we have done this afternoon.

Karonga United Coach, Dan Dzinkambani said his charges played a normal game and that they defeat could not be attributed to silvers experience.

“We played better and am happy with the way the boys have played on that we failed to create more scoring opportunities to win the cup,” he added.
