Liverpool comeback against Barcelona: Jurgen Klopp says ‘I don’t know how they did it’

Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp has reached his third Champions League final, losing his previous two with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he was “overwhelmed” and saw his players in tears after they completed the biggest Champions League semi-final comeback to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate.

The Reds lost the first leg 3-0 but doubles from Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi at Anfield took them into a final against Ajax or Tottenham.

“If I have to describe this club then it’s a big heart and tonight it was pounding like crazy,” he said.

“You could hear it all over the world.”

According to BBC, Klopp was almost giddy in his BT Sport interview, checking it was past the watershed before swearing and saying he was happy to pay a fine.

“The whole game was too much,” he said. “Winning is difficult but with a clean sheet, I don’t know how they did it.”

“It means so much to all of us. There are more important things in the world. But creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special. It’s all about the players.

“The mix of potential and unbelievable heart is just a mix I never saw before. It shows what’s possible in football. It’s so nice.”

It is the first time since 1986 – when Barcelona knocked out Gothenburg in the old European Cup – that a team have recovered a three-goal first-leg deficit to win a semi-final in this competition.

“I said to the boys before ‘I don’t think it’s possible but because it’s you I think we have a chance’ – they are really mentality giants. It’s unbelievable,” Klopp added.

“After the season we played, the games we had, the injuries we had now in this moment, if you go out there and ask who bet a penny on us, I don’t think you would find a lot of people.

“We know this club is the mix of atmosphere, emotion, desire and football quality. Cut off one and it doesn’t work.”

Klopp won two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup with Borussia Dortmund but since 2012 has lost two Champions League finals, one Europa League final, two German Cups and a Carabao Cup final.

“I know what people say about me and losing finals, that’s absolutely right,” said Klopp, who guided the five-time European champions to last season’s final, which they lost to Real Madrid. “But it’s the fourth final in that time as well we are in, that’s pretty special already.

“Last year we really felt we have to go back – we cannot let it stand like this, that’s not possible. Now we get another chance and we will go for that, of course.

“I’m not sure if it will happen again because it’s so special. When I saw the boys after the game and saw the tears in their eyes, that’s football. This club touches you like crazy, it’s like you feel much more than others in these moments.”

Wijnaldum said his team had showed “everything is possible in football”.

The midfielder replaced the injured Andy Robertson at half-time and scored twice, with Origi getting the winner.

“After the game in Spain we were confident we could score four and win 4-0,” he said.

“People outside doubted us. They thought we couldn’t do it. But once again we showed everything is possible in football.

“I was really angry that the manager put me on the bench. I just tried to help my team, I’m happy I could do that with two goals.”

The final is in Madrid on 1 June and will be the first since 2013 without a Spanish side involved – that after a run of seven finalists from that country in the past five seasons.

“Who’s going to the final? We are,” said Liverpool left-back Robertson, when asked about a running battle he had with former Reds striker Luis Suarez, whose kick injured the Scot and led to his half-time substitution. “That’s all that matters. Gini went on [for me] and scored two. I don’t care right now.”

Robertson also said this unlikely victory can help his side as they attempt to win the Premier League title on Sunday. They need to beat Wolves and hope leaders Manchester City drop points at Brighton to win their first league title since 1990.

“Fingers crossed,” he said. “We go to Sunday full of energy. It’s out of our hands but we’ve seen stranger things happen. Especially tonight.”

Karonga holds TN Stars……Earns Airtel top 8 semis

By Lusekero Mhango

Karonga united earned their maiden Airtel top 8 semi final after knocking out TN stars virtue of the away goal rule after a 0-0 draw at the Karonga stadium on Saturday.

The semi final berth was achieved after the 2 sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Kasungu and now Karonga wait for the winners of Mzuni against  Civo sporting quarter final.

The match played in front of a partisan home crowd saw the crocodiles of Karonga do enough in the 90 minutes to make it through to the semis.

In a first half which lacked clear goal scoring opportunities saw the home side dominate the possession with Gule Mwaisope and Anthony Mfune have Karonga United’s 2 goal scoring opportunities.

Lawrence Banda had the Kasungu based sides only chance in the first half with his left footed shot going narrowly wide past Karonga’s young goal custodian Anthony Singini.

In the second half the game began in the same note with both sides weary to attack each other with a semi final berth up for grabs.

Mindful of needing an away goal to come back in the tie TN brought on striker Tonex Viyuyu and trouble banda in the hunt for a goal.

In a frantic last 15 minutes Stern Dave and Trouble Banda went close for TN stars while Anthony Mfune also missed a sitter as space opened up for Karonga United after the away side left space in the back as they pushed men upfield.

Speaking in a post-match interview Karonga united team manager Kondwani Mwalweni, hailed his sides achievement for reaching the semi’s.

“We played a good game and we should of won the match on the day if we took our chances but in the end the chances we missed didn’t matter as we got through to our first major semifinal,” he said.

TN stars assistant coach Monki Chilwa, conceded that they left themselves with too much to do in the second leg after performing badly at home in the first leg.

“Ultimately we have paid the price for our below par performance at home, we played alright today but we failed to score so we have to congratulate Karonga for booking a semifinal place,” said a frustrated Chilwa.

His name is Shiva N’Zigou, a Gabonese footballer who plays as a striker for French club Saint-Nazaire AF.

As a striker he arrived in the famous Nantes youth system in 1998 and played his first senior match in 2002.

He spent the 2004/05 season on loan to FC Gueugnon, but after only one season he was transferred to Reims.

In 2011, he joined Belgian Third Division team Royal Excelsior Virton as a free agent after his contract at Reims expired.

Weird; QATAR’S 2022 FIFA World cup Vagina stadium finally unveiled after ridicule

QATAR’S 2022 FIFA World cup Vagina stadium finally unveiled after ridicule

A new football stadium in Qatar has been compared to female genitalia due to its unique design

A ‘vagina-shaped’ football stadium has been unveiled in Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup in the country.

The construction of the so-called Al Wakrah ground has now been completed, with some saying it resembles female genitalia.

The stadium, which will host matches until the quarter-finals of the tournament, was designed by the late British-Iraqi architect Dame Zaha Hadid.

Ms Hadid previously told TIME Magazine she was embarrassed that people were comparing the building to a vagina after artist’s impressions were published in 2013.

Qatar 2022 World Cup: First look at 80,000-seater stadium for final

She said: “It’s really embarrassing they come up with nonsense stuff like this. What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vagina? That’s ridiculous.”

The architect added that if the building was designed by a man, it would not have received the same level of criticism.

However, some critics supported the design of the so-called ‘Vagina Stadium’.

One said: “In a world where sport and vaginas very rarely come together with such prominence (see every UK female footballer’s salary versus every UK male footballer’s salary), the likeness can only be a good thing.

“After all why not have 45,000 people crammed inside a woman’s reproductive system? It’s not like they haven’t been there before.”

The stadium is one of many arenas being constructed across Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup

Ms Hadid, nicknamed the ‘queen of the curve’, sourced inspiration for the building from the flowing shape of the traditional Arabian dhow boat.

The architect died suddenly from a heart attack in 2016, aged 65.

The World Cup will take place in Qatar in the winter, to ensure that visitors are not overwhelmed by hot weather .

RSA athletes Caster Semenya loses battle over new testosterone rule

The Court of Arbitration for Sport issued its ruling on Wednesday, says Lailas News

The IAAF wants female athletes with differences in sexual development to take testosterone blockers.

That ruling means officials can implement new rules on testosterone levels.

But Caster said it had “serious concerns as to the future practical application” of the new rules.

Caster Semenya, 28, had said the regulations were “unfair” and that she wanted to “run naturally, the way I was born”.

Now the Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion at 800m – and other athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) – must either take medication in order to compete in track events from 400m to the mile, or change to another distance.

Cas found that the rules for athletes with DSD were discriminatory – but that the discrimination was “necessary, reasonable and proportionate” to protect “the integrity of female athletics”.

However, Cas set out serious concerns about the application of the rules, including:

  • Worries that athletes might unintentionally break the strict testosterone levels set by the IAAF;
  • Questions about the advantage higher testosterone gives athletes over 1500m and the mile;
  • The practicalities for athletes of complying with the new rules.

Cas has asked the IAAF to consider delaying the application of the rules to the 1500m and one mile events until more evidence is available, BBC Sports reports.

Semenya would still be eligible to compete at the Diamond League meet in Doha on Friday.

By Moses Nyirenda

Lilongwe Golf Club has appealed to Lady Golfers in the country to join the sport and attain required basic skills in order for them to turn into professions.

Lilongwe Golf Club Captain, Medson Roka made the appeal Saturday at Lilongwe Golf Club during the 39th Zimbabwe Independence Golf Tournament which was organized by Zimbabweans who are living in the country together with Zimbabwe High Commission.

He said once they join the sport they would strive to become champions and become economically empowered among sportswomen in the country.

Roka said that Golf is one of the sporting activities that bring economic change among its practitioners; hence he encouraged women to join the sport if they have to remain economically independent in their families.

“Golf is one of the best sporting disciplines globally which brings people together where they share ideas such as business concepts, opportunities and networks that mostly uplift their economic statuses.

It is my plea to ladies especially young women to join golf sport so that they should become stars while at the same time remaining financially independent,” he pointed out.

The Captain said that his club has about 300 golfers and out of them 80 are female.

He said that his team is eyeing to train more female golfers as one way of promoting golf sport among ladies in the country.

According to him, many people fail to join golf sport as they believe that the sport is mainly for highly privileged people, hence he said at his club everyone is allowed to play golf regardless of economic stability.

“People think that golf is for the rich people and this is not true, at Lilongwe Golf Club we accept everyone including people from underprivileged households,” he said.

Roka advised parents to allow their children particularly girls to join Lilongwe Golf Club saying that his club provides free golf playing materials and trainings for kids in order for them to understand the sport at a tender age and become professionals in the future.

One of the Zimbabwean female golfers who organized the Zimbabwe Independence Golf Tournament, Cathie Wakadiwa Matura, said that golf experts from Zimbabwe are committed to promote golf in the country among people including ladies.

Sangano strikes down Moyale in derby; TNM Super League

By Lusekero Mhango

Mzuni FC’s dominance  in the Mzuzu derby continued on Saturday as Lackson Sangano’s first half goal was enough to edge out their bitterest rivals Moyale barracks FC in the TNM super league match.

The derby which was played at Karonga stadium due to the fixture being banned from taking place at Mzuzu stadium due to the violence that occurred last season between the two sides saw Mzuni dominate the game from start to finish with the 1-0 scoreline flattering Moyale barracks who put on an abject performance in the derby.

The green intellectuals showed they were up for the match as they took the game to the Kan’ingna based soldiers from the kick off as Joseph Mbaga should of put the home side in front in the first minute but his left footed shot from the inside of the penalty area was brilliantly saved by McDonald Harawa who was in inspiring form in the match.

Goalkeeper Harawa was also alert enough to keep out attempts from  Gift Kasambala and Collens Nkulambe as mzuni piled on the pressure.

Moyale recovered from the early scares and initiated their own attacking moves with Delse Nkuto going close from a set peace that caught out the mzuni’s defence.

However in the 23rd minute mzuni took a deserved lead when Lackson Sangano cooly finished past a hapless Harawa following a corner from Ramadan Mtafu.

In the second half both sides looked sluggish in the early stages and it was not until the 60th minute that a chance was calved out, Nkulambe thought he had put his side 2-0 up but his bundled effort was superbly stopped on the goal line by the impressive Harawa.

Despite possessing the goal machine that is Gastin Simkonda and Brown Magaga in the wings, Moyale failed to create any real chance of note.

As Mzuni FC hung on comfortably for a deserved 1 nil victory

In the post-match interview Mzuni FC coach Gilbert Chilwa, hailed his sides display in the dominant win.

“We have had a slow start to the season where our performances haven’t been the best but today we were back to our usual selves and we thoroughly merited our victory,” he said.

According to Victor Phiri Moyale barracks team manager, his charges were second best throughout the match hence they deserved to lose.

“It was not our day we have to be honest to ourselves and fans, the more we forget about the game and our performance today the better,” said a frustrated Phiri.

With the victory Mzuni FC climb up to fourth on the log table with 5 points from their 4 games while Moyale drop to 6th with 4 points from their 4 matches.

FIFA bans Malawi soccer player Hellings Mwakasungula for life

FIFA bans Malawi soccer player Hellings Mwakasungula for life (left on the ball)

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Former Flames and Silver Strikers midfielder Hellings Mwakasungula has been banned for life from all football related activities by the world soccer governing body, FIFA.

In a statement released by the body on Wednesday, nine individuals, from which eight are players/former players and one is a player’s agent, were found guilty of being involved in match manipulation in violation of Article 69 part 1 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (Unlawfully influencing match results).

According to reports, Mwakasungula committed the crimes in 2008 when he was playing for the senior team during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier which was staged in Angola.

It is believed that the former player, who is now part of Silver Strikers technical panel, got himself involved in match fixing.

Below is the full list:

Karlon Murray, Trinidad and Tobago; Keyeno Thomas, Trinidad and Tobago; Hellings Mwakasungula, Malawi; Ibrahim Kargbo, Sierra Leone; Kudzanai Shaba, Zimbabwe; Séïdath Tchomogo, Benin; Leonel Duarte, Cuba; and Mohammad Salim Israfeel Kohistani, Afghanistan

Moreover, the Kenyan player Mr George Owino Audi has been banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at both national and international level (administrative, sports or any other) for a period of ten (10) years.

The formal disciplinary proceedings into the aforementioned individuals stemmed from an extensive investigation into various international matches that Mr Wilson Raj Perumal attempted to manipulate for betting purposes.

This large-scale investigation was conducted by FIFA over several years through its Integrity Department and in cooperation with the relevant stakeholders and authorities.

The decisions were notified to the individuals concerned today, the date on which the relevant bans come into force.

Malawi FA  opens Flames job to locals, expatriates

The position fell vacant following the expiry of expatriate Ronny van Geneugden’s (RVG) contract on April 1.

Mwase is the Flames interim coach

On whether the association will hire another expatriate or a local coach, FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said: “It was left open-ended subject to consultations with all key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development and the technical subcommittee.”

He said the executive committee has resolved that FAM would focus on development by recruiting regional coaches “while government should recruit coaches for all national teams”.

“This approach is considered to be a shared responsibility,” he said as quoted in the Nation Newspaper.

FAM has since set the ball rolling on the issue by courting government through the Malawi National Council of Sports.

“It is an on-going process, but we are hoping to have the new coach in place by June end.

“It will be necessary to have the coach before the joint 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and 2022 World Cup qualifiers whose preliminary matches start in August this year,” he said.

But Sports Council last week sent FAM back to the drawing board on the process of recruiting the next Flames coach.

The Council’s executive secretary George Jana said: “We discussed the issue, but we sent them back to recast because other than expressing the wish, their initial request was blank.

“It [the request] was not detailed, so we have told them what to do and they are working on that.”

Currently, Under-23 national coach Meke Mwase is in charge of the senior team on interim basis.

The last local permanent coach for the Flames was Ernest Mtawali whose one-year contract was not renewed in 2016.
