Cameroon to host AFCON 2021

By Lusekero Mhango

Following the withdrawal of Cameroon as hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the nation will instead host the 2021 edition.

The decision comes as something of a surprise as the 2021 AFCON was already scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast.

However, CAF have instead decided to allow Cameroon another chance to do the honours.

In a statement, Africa’s football governing body said “Cameroon has officially accepted to host the Afcon 2021 through an official letter addressed to CAF. [It is] signed by the Cameroonian Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya.”

However, Ivory Coast are not completely satisfied with the decision and have submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

As a response, it is believed that they will now host the 2023 AFCON which was previously scheduled to be held in Guinea who may be pushed back to the following edition.

In the meantime, the 2019 AFCON will be held in either South Africa or Egypt who are the only countries to apply to host in Cameroon’s absence, with a decision set to be made at the start of the year.

Be Forward Wanderers Sunday came from behind to beat Silver Strikers 3-2 to grap 2018 FISD Challenge Cup at Bingu National Stadium in Area 48, Lilongwe.

Wanderers had to dig deep in the second half to second three goals to earn themselves a trophy for the just ended season.

Wanderers hitman,  Zicco Mkanda claimed a brace and Yamikani Chester bailed their team in a thrilling cup final as they were trailing by a goal to nil at interval through Michael Tetteh’s first half strike.

It was a sweet revenge for Wanderers owing to their 2017 Airtel Cup final defeat through post match penalties 10-9 at the hands of the Central Bankers.

The Lali Lubani boys had to rework in order to avoid another cup final defeat this season after they were humiliated by Master Security in the Carlsberg Cup at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre.

The first 25 minutes there was nothing home to write about as Silver failed to capitalize on their set pieces and Wanderers were playing a physical game.

Silver’s Tetteh broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Khuda Muyaba had put him through after Wanderers central defenders Bongani Kaipa and Peter Cholopi failed to clear the lines and he drove a grounder which eluded goalie, Nenani Juwaya.

Silver fans were on cloud nine at half time as their team was carrying a slander lead.

Second saw Silver introducing Ronald Pangani for Duncan Nyoni but this worsen the bankers defending ability as Nomads piled a lot of pressure in search for an equaliser.

Wanderers Mkanda levelled the scores in the 49th minute when he connected home Mike Kaziputa’s cross beating Silver’s keeper, Brighton Munthali.

Wanderers brought in veteran midfielder, Joseph Kamwendo in 54th minute and made a difference a minute later when his curved free kick was planted home by Mkanda to make it 2-1.

Silver’s midfielder, Victor Limbani equalled the scores in the 70th minute when he hammered home Mark Fodya’s free kick.

Five minutes later Referee, Gift Chicco had to be treated as a result of muscle crump to the surprise of many.

Wanderers winger, Chester hammered the last nail on Silver’s coffin in the 78th minute when he fired home Precious Sambani’s cross from close range to make it 3-2.

“This is what we did not expect. We played well in the first half and gave away easy goals in the second half which costed us a cup,” Silver’s head coach, Lovermore Fazili lamented after the game.

He admitted that it was not an easy journey to the final but they have failed to win a silverware in 2018.

Wanderers Coach, Bob Mpinganjira said he was happy that his charges gave managed to win the silverware.

“The game was not an easy one to us. We did not play well in the first half but we came back strongly in the last half and managed to score three goals,” he added.

Wanderers have won the FISD Challenge Cup for the second time since it was introduced in 2016 and have pocketed MK16 million in prize money.

Free game to Nyasa Big Bullets paid-up members

Nyasa Big Bullets have given a chance to ordinary paid-up members to watch for free their last Super League game against Civil Sporting Club at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Monday.

Bullets marketing executive Kelvin Moyo said the offer was in recognition of their support to the team.

“The game against Civil Sporting Club, which is our last game of the season, will see all ordinary paid-up members enter for free as a token of appreciation and for the loyalty they have shown to the team.

“This will also encourage other supporters to see the importance of being members,” he said.

Nyasa Big Bullets supporters’ director Stone Mwamadi said the team’s offer should encourage more supporters to appreciate the benefits of becoming paid up members.

“This is good news as more fans will be encouraged to pay their membership fees,” he said.

Mwamadi cited the time one of their fans, who died in a road accident, was identified because he was a paid-up member.

“It’s not just about helping the team but also shows ownership of the team. No supporter should claim to be the team’s supporter when he doesn’t even pay membership.”

The entry charge is still MK1 000 for those who have not paid membership fee as the Wednesday’s match against Silver Strikers which is MK1000.

Bullets introduced membership fees with MK1 000, MK5 000, MK20 000, MK50 000 and MK100 000 and currently around 9 000 supporters only of their supporters base have paid membership fee.

“If our teams are to sustain  themselves in the long term there is need for sponsorship especially teams like Karonga united who have entertained and brought smiles to people despite their financial difficulties of being a community run club,” Maloya articulated.

The 55-year-old Portuguese insisted at Anfield that he had not lost the dressing room, as his team sat sixth in the Premier League table and 11 points off the Champions League places.

But Manchester United announced on Tuesday that “manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect”.

A statement continued: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

Karonga  UTD downs eagles, secures super league status

By Lusekero Mhango

Rookies Karonga United secured themselves another season in top flight following a hard fought 2-1 win over Blue Eagles in a TNM Super League match played on Saturday.

The win which has lifted the ingwina’s up to seventh on the log table was earned through goals from Anthony Mfune and Gule Mwaisope while Maxwell Salambura scored eagles goal.

The match played at the soccer cathedral of Karonga stadium in front of a heavy police presence following threats from alleged Karonga united thugs who threatened to deal with blue eagles following incidents at the corresponding match in Lilongwe where 2 Karonga officials were assaulted and paper sprayed saw the home side dominate the match after a nervy start to the proceedings.

Shariff Shamama had a first sight at goal in the 10th minute but his rasping strike went narrowly wide past John soko’s goal.

Further chances from Anthony Mfune, Khumbo msowoya and William Mwalwimba were spurned by the home side before half time.

The area 30 based outfit despite possessing the likes of Maxwell Salambura, Stuart Mbunge and Mesham Mhone offered very little in an attacking sense.

In the second half  the home side began it how they ended the first half probbing the eagles defence with their incisive football.

In the 55th minute Karonga united were finally rewarded for their pressure when Anthony Mfune tapped in passed a helpless John Soko from Chamama’s cross after a darting run from the right.

However the lead didn’t last long as with their first meaningful attack on goal Maxwell Salambura equalized following a thrilling team move..

Despite suffering a setback conceding soon after taking the lead the home side looked more likely to go on and score the winner as their intensity and desire didn’t wilt in the Karonga heat.

When they appeared to heading to a share of the spoils substitute Gule Mwaisope who had barely been on the pitch for more than 4 minutes grabbed the winner with a neat finish.

In a post match interview Karonga united head coach Wilbaforce Longwe, praised his boys character and fighting spirit to fight to end to chase the winner.

“This was a fantastic team performance from start to finish and the victory is well merited and we can’t wait for next season now because this team will only get better individually and as a team,” he warned.

According to blue eagles assistant coach Christopher Sibale, the league season has been disappointing and they’ll try to improve next season.

“Despite having a disappointing league season at least we have something to show as we have won the airtel top 8 cup, not everyone can claim to have won a trophy this season,” he argued.

With the win Karonga united have ended the season with 37 points from 30 matches and blue eagles have ended their season in 10th position with 35 points from 30 matches.

Malawi Queens Star Mwai Kumwenda Visited Parliament

Malawi Queens and Melbourne Vixens Netball Star Mwai Kumwenda visted Parliament on Thursday and she writes:

I had a wonderful experience at Parliament today when I was invited by Honourable Minister of Sports, Grace Obama Chiumia. I was also humbled to have tea with the Speaker of Parliament Honourable Richard Msowoya.

Mwayi Kumwenda (also known as Mwai or Mwawi; born 27 September 1989 in Mzimba, Malawi) is a Malawian netball player who plays for the Malawi national netball team, the Malawi Queens, and the Suncorp Super Netball franchise, the Melbourne Vixens.

Kumwenda was first played in senior international netball at the 2010 World Netball Series. She played in the 2011 Netball World Championships, where Malawi finished sixth. She also played in the 2011 World Netball Series where during a game against Australia her and Mary Waya scored three consecutive 4 pointers in the last quarter to snatch a historic draw.

She played in the 2012 Fast5 Netball World Series in Auckland, where she put in several outstanding performances, which resulted in her becoming a fan favourite, and vaulted her in ANZ Championship consideration. Malawi finished in 5th place, but were able to beat silver medalists England during the round robin stage.[

Kumwenda also competed for Malawi at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, in which her vast improvement from more competitive play in New Zealand helped her team to many highs. Losing to New Zealand 50-47, they recorded the closest result ever against the country and one of their best performances in Netball history. In addition to this, one sided matches against St Lucia, Scotland and Northern Ireland in which she scored many goals showcased Malawi’s improved attacking prowess. Despite their 31 goal loss to Jamaica 81-50, Mwayi showcased further development in that not only did she score a large number of goals but also played Goal Keeper for a time in the 4th Quarter, in which her aerial ability allowed her to get some deflections against the giant Jhaniele Fowler-Reid. Malawi beat South Africa to claim 5th place in the tournament.

She also captained the Queens at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series in Melbourne, where Malawi finished third.

Kumwenda was originally noticed at the 2009 Netball World Youth Cup, where she was one of Malawi’s most prolific shooters. She drew the attention of Peninsula Waves coach Maxine Wauchope and was invited to play club netball in Victoria, Australia.

She also attracted the attention of Canterbury Tactix coach Leigh Gibbs in New Zealand. In September 2013, Kumwenda became the first African netball player to sign for an ANZ Championship franchise when she signed with the Tactix for the 2014 season.

In the 2014 ANZ Championship season, Kumwenda burst onto the international scene. Amassing more goals than any other shooter in the competition and shooting above 90% on a very regular basis, she won the ANZ Championship’s Best New Talent award, along with a slew of awards from her club, the Canterbury Tactix. She signed with them again for the 2015 and 2016 seasons and was one of their greatest assets.

After three years with the Tactix, Kumwenda signed with the Melbourne Vixens to play in the new Australian Suncorp Super Netball league. Kumwenda has been a damaging attacking player at the Vixens, though late in the 2018 season she suffered a serious knee injury, causing her to miss what is expected to be close to a year of netball.

MOURINHO: WE’LL BE FIGHTING TO WIN AT ANFIELD – MAN U

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho insists the Manchester United team he will select to face Liverpool on Sunday will have the desire, ambition and fight to win at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho insists the Manchester United team he will select to face Liverpool on Sunday will have the desire, ambition and fight to win at Anfield.

The Reds will make the relatively short trip along the M62 to face our arch-rivals for the fifth time under Mourinho, with the opportunity of extending the club’s unbeaten run against the Merseysiders to nine meetings.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday morning, the boss was asked if he has the strategy and tools to triumph at one of the toughest grounds to visit.

“I’m going to try,” said Jose. “I always try and I want to play a team that is capable to be with me on that desire, ambition and confidence. We know we’re going to play against the [league] leaders and a team on a high but we have our qualities and our potential.

“Even with the problems we have and doubts in terms of team choice, tactics, approach and philosophy – we have doubts about everything because we don’t know which players are available. We’re going to arrive on Sunday with the players that we’re going to have available. We’re going to have a team capable of going there and fighting for the victory.”

The men from Old Trafford have lost just one of the club’s last seven Premier League trips to Anfield, and have earned clean sheets in both visits under Mourinho. In fact, since he became United boss, the Portuguese has yet to lose to Liverpool at home or away, unlike some of his fellow managers in the Premier League’s top six.

However, he feels past results have no bearing on Sunday’s game, which is his only focus at present.

“I think we got two positive results against Liverpool last season,” he recalled. “We beat them at home and we haven’t lost any match against them in four I think, but that was the past.

“Sunday has nothing to do with what happened in the past, so I have to focus not on what happened, not on the credit that we were given or not. I have to focus on the next match. The next match is the one that is important and that’s it.”
