Jose Mourinho in pain: As Arsenal dashes Tottenham’ League’s top four hopes

Erik Lamela’s ‘rabona’ finish came just 14 minutes after he replaced the injured Son Heung-min

LONDON-(MaraviPost)-Arsenal came from behind to secure a fully deserved north London derby win and inflict damage on Tottenham’s hopes of a place in the Premier League’s top four as Spurs coach Jose Mourinho is in pain.

The Gunners were vastly superior until a Spurs rally in the closing stages but fell behind to a piece of genius from Erik Lamela – on for the injured Son Heung-min – when he curved a magnificent rabona finish beyond Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno in the 33rd minute.

Arsenal, who had seen Emile Smith Rowe’s long-range shot smack against the bar, then suffered more ill-luck when Cedric Soares hit the post, but were level on the stroke of half-time when Martin Odegaard’s effort was deflected out of the reach of Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris.

Mikel Arteta’s side continued to dominate a largely dreadful Spurs and took the lead from the penalty spot after 64 minutes when Alexandre Lacazette missed his kick but was fouled by Davinson Sanchez.

Lacazette recovered to send Lloris the wrong way for his 12th goal of the season.

Spurs’ day got worse when Lamela was sent off for a second yellow card, shown by referee Michael Oliver for a hand-off into the face of Kieran Tierney with 14 minutes left.

But they almost snatched a point in the closing moments when Harry Kane’s free-kick bounced off the post, with Arsenal defender Gabriel heading Sanchez’s goal-bound shot off the line from the rebound.

Arsenal, who dropped captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the game for disciplinary reasons, stay in 10th place but Spurs are now six points adrift of Chelsea in fourth, although with a game in hand.

Manchester United Part company with Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho insists the Manchester United team he will select to face Liverpool on Sunday will have the desire, ambition and fight to win at Anfield.

Posting on Manchester United website indicates that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.

The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

The club’s website crashed soon after the news was revealed.

Sky Sports News understands that his assistant Michael Carrick will be appointed temporary manager to the end of the season.

Mourinho’s future has been the subject of intense scrutiny this season – and the club’s worst start to a season in 28 years was confirmed with defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
Mourinho’s final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool

The 55-year-old Portuguese insisted at Anfield that he had not lost the dressing room, as his team sat sixth in the Premier League table and 11 points off the Champions League places.

But Manchester United announced on Tuesday that “manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect”.

A statement continued: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Jose Mourinho insists the Manchester United team he will select to face Liverpool on Sunday will have the desire, ambition and fight to win at Anfield.

The Reds will make the relatively short trip along the M62 to face our arch-rivals for the fifth time under Mourinho, with the opportunity of extending the club’s unbeaten run against the Merseysiders to nine meetings.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday morning, the boss was asked if he has the strategy and tools to triumph at one of the toughest grounds to visit.

“I’m going to try,” said Jose. “I always try and I want to play a team that is capable to be with me on that desire, ambition and confidence. We know we’re going to play against the [league] leaders and a team on a high but we have our qualities and our potential.

“Even with the problems we have and doubts in terms of team choice, tactics, approach and philosophy – we have doubts about everything because we don’t know which players are available. We’re going to arrive on Sunday with the players that we’re going to have available. We’re going to have a team capable of going there and fighting for the victory.”

The men from Old Trafford have lost just one of the club’s last seven Premier League trips to Anfield, and have earned clean sheets in both visits under Mourinho. In fact, since he became United boss, the Portuguese has yet to lose to Liverpool at home or away, unlike some of his fellow managers in the Premier League’s top six.

However, he feels past results have no bearing on Sunday’s game, which is his only focus at present.

“I think we got two positive results against Liverpool last season,” he recalled. “We beat them at home and we haven’t lost any match against them in four I think, but that was the past.

“Sunday has nothing to do with what happened in the past, so I have to focus not on what happened, not on the credit that we were given or not. I have to focus on the next match. The next match is the one that is important and that’s it.”

Manchester United management meets with Zinedine Zidane

Manchester United were thumped 3-1 by West Ham on Saturday, ramping up pressure on Jose Mourinho, who hasn’t been out of the news this week due to issues with Paul Pogba.

According to dailyadvent.com, it was reportedly that the club has held initial talks with Zinedine Zidane following the defeat with a view to replacing the Portuguese.

The Portuguese made some unusual changes for the West Ham game, removing Alexis Sanchez from the squad and playing three men at the back – one of whom was midfielder Scott McTominay. Rio Ferdinand spoke out on his former team on BT Sport following the fixture, and suggested the board will meet up this week to discuss Mourinho’s position.

Manchester United set to hand Jose Mourinho contract extension

MANCHESTER-(MaraviPost)-Jose Mourinho is set to extend his contract with Manchester United, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The 54-year-old initially signed a three-year deal with the option of an additional 12 months when he replaced Louis van Gaal in 2016.

But, as first reported by The National, he is set to sign an extension before entering the final year of his contract that would keep him at Old Trafford for another three years until 2021.

Mourinho’s future has been the source of much speculation since an interview with French television in October during which he said he would not end his career at United.

He also praised the “special project” at Paris Saint-Germain, where boss Unai Emery has been linked with a summer exit.

However, Mourinho has indicated he is willing to extend his stay at Old Trafford with the terms of the new contract all but agreed.

Sources said nothing has been signed but it is considered to be a formality.

Sources close to Mourinho indicated an announcement could be made as early as this week.

Mourinho enjoyed a successful first season at United, winning both the League Cup and the Europa League.

Lifting the Europa League guaranteed a passage back into the Champions League despite a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

They currently sit second in the table, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, with a Champions League last-16 knock-out tie with Sevilla to come next month.
