Malawi’s women football star Tabitha Chawinga wins Chinese Super Cup
Malawi national women’s football team Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, inspired her Chinese Women’s Super League side Jiangsu Sunning to a 3-0 victory over Dalian Aerbin to win the Chinese Women’s Super Cup on Saturday.
According to the Daily Times, Chawinga netted one goal in the second leg at home but scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 away victory in the first leg.
This is Tabitha’s second trophy in her debut season in China after she won the Chinese National Cup. In total, Tabitha has netted seven goals in the Chinese Super Cup.
In an interview from China, Tabitha said she was excited with her exploits in China.
“I am very happy to help the team. I thank God for making it possible for me and I will continue working hard so that I achieve my goals,” Chawinga said.
She recently won the Golden Boot Award after scoring 17 goals, seven more than reigning African Woman Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria.
Following her exploits in China, Tabitha is expected to give Oshoala a good run for her money in Africa’s top award this year.
Tabitha’s sister, Temwa, is also scoring goals for fun at her Swedish side Kvarnvederns IK in her debut season.
DD Sunshine Coach, Andrew Chikhosi, said he is not surprised with Tabitha’s form in China.
“This is what I expected from her because I know she is a quality footballer. I believe this is just the beginning. We should expect more,” Chikhosi said.
While in Sweden, Tabitha won three Golden Boot awards in both the top flight league and second-tier.
The 21-year-old striker, who was born in Rumphi District, also won Sweden’s 2017 Best Forward of the Year accolade, beating Fifa Best Player of the Year Lieke Martens and Montpellier’s Stina Blackstenius.
Tabitha then went on to become the first Malawian player to be nominated for the African Woman Footballer of the Year award.
Karonga United coach Nyambose manhandled by supporters
Karonga United head coach, Christopher Nyambose, who was temporarily suspended two weeks ago, was on Tuesday harassed by the team supporters, forcing him to go away from the their training base.
Nyambose is reportedly having absenting himself from duty after the team’s three consecutive losses in the central region to Civil Sporting Club in the FISD Challenge Cup and Masters Security and Silver Strikers in the TNM Super League.
The club’s management decided to temporarily suspended Nyambose only to resolve to recall him last week.
But on Tuesday this week when Nyambose was discharging his duties, angry Karonga United supporters came and manhandled him; forcing him to leave the training ground.
Karonga United General Secretary, Abraham Mwakhwawa, confirmed the incident saying both supporters and some players no longer wish Nyambose to take charge of the club for reasons best known to them.
“It’s true I was called to the training ground only to find only seven players training.
It is alleged that some of the players together with the supporters no longer wish the services of the coach. I was therefore advised by the club’s Chairperson to ask Mr Nyambose to temporarily halt his duties for security reasons,” confirmed Mwakhwawa.
In the absence of Nyambose, the team has managed to collect 4 points from two games under Wilberforce Longwe.
They beat Red Lions and drew against Mzuni FC. Both games were played at Karonga Stadium.
Efforts to talk to Christopher Nyambose proved futile.
Be Forward Wanderers suspend manager Madeira over Kamwenda fracas
TNM Super League defending champions Mighty Be Forward Wanderers have suspended its Team Manager Stevie Madeira following the commotion with Joseph Kamwendo on Saturday.
In the TNM Super League match between Wanderers and Silver Strikers over the weekend, former Wanderers’ captain, Joseph Kamwendo was substituted, which did not please him and pointed at Madeira for his substitution which later ended in a fight.
Speaking in an interview, Wanderers’ Vice General Secretary, Chulu Mkangama, disclosed that Madeira was also found guilty and was suspended over the issue.
However he refused to speak to media.
“I don’t understand why people want us to deal with Madeira in the public. We have got internal structures that we normally follow and Madeira has been dealt with within the internal structures of Wanderers and the resolutions are not for public consumption.
“It is a matter of employer and employee code of conduct. The contractual agreement does not allow us to talk to the media on such issues and terms,” Mkangama said.
Mkangama further said the two sides have been punished without hearing the sides of the concerned parties, saying it was not worthy hearing from them.
He said as of Madeira, he was given a summary dismissal.
He said: “As a team manager, he retaliated. He shouldn’t have been too quick to anger but instead he should have controlled himself. Being one of the top officials at the team, he should have led by example.”
Following the fracas, Be Forward Wanderers’ Executive Committee and Disciplinary Committee gave Kamwendo a four game suspension and a fine of MK50 000.

Warmly welcome to Malawi Queens back from Australia’s Fast5
Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, Member of Parliament Jessie Kabwila—in her capacity as Chairperson of Women’s Caucus in Parliament—and a handful of netball lovers on Tuesday welcomed Malawi national netball team.
Kasaila said he was pleased with the team’s performance and asked the private sector to complement the government’s efforts in developing netball.
The sports minister made the remarks at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe after jetting in from Melbourne, Australia, where the Queens finished on fourth position out of six teams which competed in the Fast5 Netball World Series over the weekend.
“As the government, we will continue to support the Queens so that they prepare well for competitions. But we need the support of companies to assist the team so that they continue doing us proud,” he said.
Kabwila also offered words of encouragement to the players, saying: “The Queens have performed beyond our expectations. If we invest more in the team, they can do better.”
The Queens Coach, Griffin Saenda Senior however called for early camp training ahead of next year’s World Netball Championship in England.
“We need more days to prepare for such tournaments. I am sure that we could have done better if we had stayed in camp for one month. It was also good beating England and South Africa; a sign that we are recovering,” he said.
At the Fast5, the Queens beat England and South Africa but lost to Jamaica, New Zealand and Australia (twice). The Queens finished on sixth place at last year’s competition.
The Queens trained for 10 days ahead of the tournament in Australia. The team is without a sponsor after Rach Family Trust’s failed deal.
Malawi Queens back home today
The Malawi national netball team returns home today after finishing on fourth position at the Fast5 World Netball Series in Melbourne, Australia.
Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said the association will be welcoming back the team convinced that it will perform well at next year’s World Netball Cup in Liverpool, England.
“The team will be back home on Tuesday afternoon [today] and we will welcome it with satisfaction. We set a target for it to finish in the top five and that has happened. What remains is for us to mobilise resources to help in preparing for the World Cup,” Bapu said.
Meanwhile, former Queens captain Emmie Chongwe has advised the team to avoid getting too excited with the fourth-place finish.
“Last year, we finished on position six and now we are fourth. This means that we have achieved something. England were last year’s champions but now they have moved to fifth. Finishing on fourth position is quite commendable.
“But the Fast5 format is quite different from normal netball which has seven players and this is where we need to plan carefully and prepare thoroughly,” said Chongwe, who captained the Queens for over 10 years as quoted in the Daily Times.
Chongwe said players should be picked on merit to help the Queens shine at the event.
“What I noticed at Fast5 should not be repeated at World Cup. The choice of players was not quite good. Shooting was our weakest area. We needed to pick target players. Since Mwawi [Kumwenda] was not available we should have made sure to bring in Sindie Simtowe Msowoya.
Alinafe Kamwala did not play to the expected standards.
“At centre court, Takondwa Lwazi was the only useful player. As a result, she did not have enough rest to give out her best. So we needed an alternative centre court player,” Chongwe said.
