Nomads through to round-of-16 in Fisd Challenge Cup

On a blue afternoon that had revenge plastered all over Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre Tuesday, vengeful Be Forward Wanderers finally mastered the art of defeating 10- man Masters Security FC.
Nomads gave Masters, who hardly mustered a shot on target in the first-half, a bitter taste of their own medicine after trouncing them 4-0 Tuesday in the Fisd Challenge Cup round-of-32 match.
It was a perfect revenge for Wanderers—three days after the visitors denied them the Carlsberg Cup at the same venue—as they date minnows Dwangwa Town Hammers in the round-of-16.
Not only did the Nomads reshuffle their playing squad but also slipped into the traditional blue colours on an afternoon that saw Peter Wadabwa net a double in the third and 11th minutes before Mike Kaziputa added the third goal three minutes later.
Attacker Yamikani Chester netted the fourth goal in the 69th minute.
The emphatic win was all due to the Nomads Coach Bob Mpinganjira’s tactical switch, restoring winger Kaziputa, defender Lucky Malata, midfielder Rafik Namwera and striker Wadabwa to the starting line-up in place of Isaac Kaliyati, Bongani Kayipa, Joseph Kamwendo and Precious Sambani, respectively.
Hopes of the Carlsberg Cup kings crawling back into the game vanished as Kaziputa volleyed into the net the third goal after Masters’ defence had clearly poorly Chester’s shot.
Things turned from bad to worse for Masters as Juba sent Masters defender Richard Chande for an early shower following his open-stud lunge on Namwera who was driven off the stadium for treatment following a leg injury.
There was more drama as, minutes after Namwera’s injury, Juba flashed mistakenly a red card to Masters Captain Francis Mkonda before rescinding his decision to give him a yellow card.
In the second-half, Masters towering forward striker Babatunde Adebare threatened to drag the visitors back into the game but despite making several attempts, including a header that bounced off the post, he was heavily guarded by Malata, Kaziputa and Alfred Manyozo Junior.
At half-time, Football Association of Malawi and sponsors Fisd company conducted a round-of-16 draw that also saw Kamuzu Barracks being paired against Maka FC, Silver Strikers date Civil Sporting Club whereas Mafco, Zamani FC, Bullets Reserve, Airborne Rangers and Bloomfield meet Chitipa United, Nyasa Big Bullets, Blue Eagles, Ipota Shooting Stars and Moyale Barracks, respectively.

Footballs Relationship with Gambling Companies

Premier League
Premier League

This season will have nine of the twenty Premier League and seventeen out of twenty-four in the Championship advertising a gambling company on their shirts this and those experts on problem gambling describe the growing number of clubs that do have betting firms or even online s like PlayUK.com on their shirts as worrying, going as far to say that there should be a national debate on the potential harm, that in fact a debate is long overdue.

The truth is we can quote statistics as much as we like but the real question that has to be answered is the one ‘does having a name of an online on a sports shirt encourage problem gamblers?’

Of course, there will always be those people that are drawn by the perceived glamour of gambling and if their favourite football team is seen to endorse having a bet but surely those personalities are in the minority within our population?

In fact, pushing something underground, making it a little distasteful, a little shady actually appeals to many people and if we are not careful a ‘nanny state’ attitude will most likely encourage those who would not have considered have a bet or wager to do so.

Much in the way of hiding cigarettes behind sliding doors or pushing pornography to the top shelf the UK has always seemed to be able to dictate to its residents when it chooses, and rather than leave it to personal choice whether to have a bet or to smoke, there are those that would have stricter rules put into place.

As football has such a massive following in the UK it does not take a giant brain to figure out that whoever becomes the official sponsor of the top teams is hoping to push their brand forward, but really? Can we blame the fact of problem gamblers on shirt sponsorship?

People gamble for a few reasons.

There are those that have a recreational bet perhaps on a Darby or on the outcome of the World Cup, then there are those that gamble in the hope of making easy money, and those that will chase their losses and not know when to walk away, just like those who can have a recreational drink and those who do not know when to stop, the label on the bottle is not at fault it is the person themselves.

Those people who have and addictive personality are going to drink or gamble or carry out their passion to excess whatever the advertisements that surround them might be.

Orphans in Malawi receive over 100 Sadio Mane No. 19 shirts

Look how happy these orphans in Malawi are to receive their Sadio Mane Liverpool shirts

Orphans in Malawi have received over 100 Sadio Mane Liverpool shirts after they were donated when the forward changed his squad number over the summer.

Mane took up Liverpool’s No. 10 shirt in July, with Liverpool offering fans, who had already purchased a 2018-19 shirt with his previous squad number of No. 19 on the back, the opportunity of a like-for-like exchange for a No. 10 strip.

The No. 19 shirts were gathered by Liverpool and then handed to the charity KitAid as they worked with Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) to distribute the kit to underprivileged children in Malawi.

The Mane shirts recently arrived in Mulanje, a district of Malawi, to jubilant scenes among the children.

“It’s like a dream for the children in the villages, getting a t-shirt that they never thought they would get,” Mary Woodworth, founder of FOMO told ESPN FC. “It’s just magical basically.

“It will make a big difference, especially in the villages. Because they don’t have the means of getting any money or to be able to buy one t-shirt. It’s a dream come true [for them].”

KitAid is in its 20th year and recycles unwanted football kits by distributing them to some of the world’s poorest countries.

“We have a saying, which is: ‘It’s more than just a shirt,'” founder Derrick Williams told ESPN FC. “And it really is because when you go out you see the kids that are desperate for football kit to be part of a team.

“We hear stories where if they haven’t got [a] kit then their team isn’t allowed into a league, which is really heartbreaking. So it’s great that we

After LeBron James joined the Lakers, many fans and experts not without a reason began to consider the team from Los Angeles one of the main favorites of the season. This is true, but if you get a closer look at their latest results, it can be safely said that even getting to the playoffs will be a step forward for them. However, everyone is well acquainted with LeBrons ambitions, who for more than 10 years in a row has always played in the playoffs.

He will be the main motivator for the whole team, although in the first games the King did not show all his talents.

However, this is absolutely not an indicator of anything, because an experienced basketball player knows exactly how he should distribute his forces in order to save them for a long and intense season. Prospects Of Renewed Lakers

Obviously, now the team from Los Angeles will cease to be one of the league underdogs and will count on noticeable progress. However, this requires a whole range of factors:

  1. Successful game of LeBron and other newbies. Here, Mykhailiuk should be mentioned first; he was very convincing during the pre-season games.
  2. Instability of competitors. Everyone in the NBA can count on that, because even the coolest team can not guarantee a long winning streak.
  3. Progress of young players. Not for the first year, the Lakers have been called one of the most promising teams in the league, and it is possible that this season the team will be able to realize its full potential.

Anyway, this year will be very difficult for the club, but even if they fail to achieve good results, it will be understandable for their fans. The main goal is to get to the playoffs and to show a really convincing game that fans have missed so much. This season, the Western Conference promises to

“I have picked the players based on merit,” he said.

Also missing on the list is Australian based Mwai Kumwenda who is nursing an injury which has kept her out of action for almost one year now.

Mwai also missed the African Netball Championship hosted by Zambia some months ago due to the same injury.

The list of  players to represent Malawi at the Fast5 tournament this year include shooters Jane Chimaliro, Alinafe Kamwala, Jesca Mazengera and Englan- based Joyce Mvula.

Uncivilized football? Juju at Kamuzu stadium a head of Carlsberg cup final

By Gracian Tiuze Lungu
Reports indicate that there was a running battle in the dawn of today at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre between ground security crew and some unknown people believed to be supporters of one of the teams which are playing in this year’s Carlsberg final.
According to a clip going rounds on social media, It is believed that a group of people close to one hundred came at this stadium with different items including charms which are believed to be Juju which were expected to be planted on this ground ahead of the final scheduled this afternoon.
The security gurus managed to scare away the said group which left their things that include charms and hammers when they were chased away and some were wounded in process.
Speaking on one of the WhatsApp forums, ‘Pa Stand’, some soccer analysts have described this on going trend of Juju in Malawi football as primitive and uncalled for saying this degrades the value of our football.
Issues of Juju in Malawi football are not new and in most of the games played almost in all cups and league  are marred with these Juju cases but by this far, no team has been punished by either Football Association of Malawi (FAM) or Super League of Malawi, a body that runs the elite league.
Be Forward Wanderers from Blantyre and Masters Security from Malawi Capital city, Lilongwe, are the teams playing in this year’s Carlsberg cup final and coincidentally, these two teams played in in the on going CAF competitions and they were all booted out in the preliminary stages.

Tough ride for Malawi Queens in 2018 Fast5 Netball World Series

Some Malawi national netball team players have confessed that they will need to sweat blood to make it into the squad for this year’s Fast5 Netball World Series.
The Queens have intensified preparations as they seek to reclaim lost glory at this year’s event set for Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Australia, this month-end.
Former Malawi skipper, Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira, said all the players are working hard to make the final squad for the competition.
Mtukule-Ngwira said stiff competition in training would help the technical panel to select best players who would do the job in Australia.
“We are all working hard to be part of the team. Every player wants to be in the final squad and I am sure the coaches will sweat when naming the final squad,” she said as quoted in the Daily Times.
The Kukoma Diamonds Captain said Malawi should not be written off as the team is capable of bouncing back from recent poor performances and surprise the netball fraternity.
One of up-and-coming players, Madalitso Mkandawire of Civonets, having earned her first call-up, said she was working hard to be part of the squad that will travel to Australia.
“This is my first call-up and I am working hard to be selected for the trip. I know it will not be easy but I am fighting to make it into the squad,” said the goal defender.
Queens assistant Coach, Whyte Mulilima, has confessed competition in camp is tough and picking the final squad would not be easy.
Malawi finished third during the 2016 edition of the competition but fell to position in six last year’s.
In the absence of star shooter.
Mwawi Kumwenda, who is recovering from an injury, all eyes will be on Manchester Thunder shooter Joyce Mvula.

Malawi Flames’ striker Gabadihno Mhango Portugal bound

Flames striker Gabadihno Mhango is on the radar of Portuguese Primeira Liga side Vitória Futebol Clube , popularly known as Vitoria de Setubal.
Gaba, who plays for South Africa Premier Soccer League side Bidvest Wits, is struggling for game-time this season and expressed his desire to leave the club in January in search of game-time.
Mhango confirmed to The Daily Times the prospective move but could not give more details about the trip, saying he was tied up with other commitments.
“I will talk to you later my brother. I am busy at the moment,” the former Nyasa Big Bullets striker said.
Gaba is expected to fly out to Portugal from his South Africa base today for three-week trials.
Vitoria de Setubal sent scouts to watch him in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw against Cameroon at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Gaba moved to Wits in 2016 from Bloemfontein Celtic after spending six months on loan at Golden Arrows where he netted five goals.
He had an illustrious career at Celtic where he won the Players’ Player of the Season award and also finished as the club’s top goalscorer in the 2014 season.
Former Big Bullets and Wanderers striker, Andrew Chikhosi, said Gaba has the potential to shine in Portugal.
“Gaba is a very good striker and is always dangerous when facing defenders. He has all the qualities to play for big clubs and I am confident that he will do well in Portugal,” Chikhosi said.
Mhango featured for the Flames in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cameroon in two back-to-back games.
If he clinches a deal in Portugal, he will become the third Malawian player to ply his trade there in recent years after Richard Mbulu and the late Abel Mwakilama.
Mbulu had a six-month stint in Portugal before returning to Mozambique’s Costa do Sol whereas the late Mwakilama played for Club Esmoriz before his sudden death due to malaria.
Vitoria were founded in 1910 and are one of Portugal’s most decorated clubs, having won six trophies.
Some of the trophies they have won in recent years are Taxa De Portugal, Taxa da Liga, the Small Club World Cup and the Iberian Cup.
The club finished on position 14 in the Primeira Liga. Based in the city of Setubal, Vitoria’s home ground is known as Estadio do Bonfim.

Malawi Flames coach RVG says it’s work in progress

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)- Malawi National football coach Ronny Van Geneugden bemoaned the missed chances but he was quick to heap praise on his boys for a spirited performance against the defending AFCON champions.
“It’s always difficult to play against strong opponents but my boys were good today and we were very unlucky not to find the back of the net.
“I am very impressed with the performance especially in the first half where we had some clear cut chances. Like I said earlier on, this is work in progress and I am very certain that the team will continue performing the way we did today,” said RVG.
In a match where clear-cut chances were missed by Gabadinho Mhango and Chiukepo Msowoya,
Malawi saw their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification dream slowly fading following a goalless draw at home to Cameroon on Tuesday afternoon.
Malawi National football coach Ronny Van Geneugden made two changes to the squad that lost 1-0 to the Indomitable Lions in the first leg, bringing on board Msowoya and Levison Maganizo for Richard Mbulu and Jabulani Linje.

The hosts started the match on a very high note, with John Banda troubling Cameroon’s defence like nobody’s business.
However, Malawi’s never ending goal scoring problems continued again as Mhango and his striking partner missed two sitters with the goalkeeper already beaten.
At the other end, the visitors created their first goal scoring opportunity when Yaya Banana made a fantastic run at the far side of the field only to be denied by John Lanjesi.
Moments later, Mhango was found unmarked in Cameroonian’s territory and the former Nyasa Big Bullets forward dropped a loose ball into the box which was met by Yamikani Chester who fired straight at Joseph Ebogo but Mhango failed to score from the rebound with the goalkeeper already beaten.
Malawi were pressing hard in search of the much needed goal and Banda’s goal-bound effort was blocked inside Cameroon’s box with Ebogo well beaten.
The visitors should have taken a lead just minutes before the interval when Precious Sambani was caught napping in the line of duty, allowing Banana to make a run before sending a low drive cross into the box from which Chirwa made a fantastic stop to frustrate the defending AFCON champions.
Come second half, the Cameroonians started on a high note, making some beautiful passes but to unlock Malawi’s defence proved too difficult.
RVG was forced to take out Chirwa for Alfred Manyozo Jnr due to an ankle injury he sustained in the first half.
Mhango was having a tough afternoon as he kept on losing possession and ended up earning a yellow card following a confrontation with Ebogo.
Cameroon then brought in Kunde Mabong Pierre, Karl Brilliant Ekambi and Andre Franck Anguissa for Banana, Diederrick Joel Tagueu and Joyskim Tchakonte.
Pierre’s introduction gave Cameroon an edge in the midfield as he terrorized Malawians with no mercy but to pass through Lanjesi led defence proved to be very difficult.
Msowoya should have scored when he was found unmarked by Chester but his effort hit the side-netting.
Patrick Phiri and Richard Mbulu were brought in for Chester and Levison Maganizo as the hosts were desperate to find the much needed goal.
Phiri almost scored from a close range when he was set through by Mbulu only to see his effort well blocked Fai Collins Ngoran Fai.
Moments later, Mhango, in quick succession blasted his two efforts over the cross bar.
Malawi’s penalty shout was turned down by referee Victor Gomez who rescinded his earlier decision for an offside call. With less than five minutes to play, Malawi almost conceded.
Cholopi failed to clear a long ball from Georges Constant which gave Zoua Diagari Jacques all the opportunity in the world to score but his shot was well saved by Charles Swini.
The momentum was with Malawi in the closing stages of the encounter, but they continued to waste their goalscoring opportunities and after 90 minutes of play, 0-0 it ended.

Malawi are still third in Group B with four points from four games.

In another match, Comoros Island and Morocco played out to a 2-all draw in Comoros.
Cameroon lead the group with 8 points, with Morocco coming second with 7 points.
Malawi will play Comoros Island and Morocco in their remaining two qualification games.
