Salah scoops 2025 PFA Player of the Year

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been voted the 2025 PFA Men’s Player of the Year after a record breaking campaign in the Premier League.

The Egyptian star, who scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists last season, matched the league record with 47 goal involvements and clinched his fourth Golden Boot, equaling Thierry Henry’s tally.

Salah beat competition from Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister to win the prestigious award.

The victory adds to a growing list of honours for the 33-year-old, who was also named Liverpool’s Player of the Season for the fifth time and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a record equalling third time.

The award was presented at a glittering ceremony in London, where Salah arrived on the red carpet before his name was announced as the winner in front of fellow professionals.

His performances throughout the campaign not only helped Liverpool remain in contention for honours but also reinforced his place among the Premier League’s greatest players.

Salah, who recently extended his contract with Liverpool until 2027 after turning down an approach from the Saudi Pro League, said the unwavering support from the fans played a key role in his decision to stay.

His latest accolade underlines his remarkable consistency and influence, both for club and country.

Manchester United prepare to take on Tottenham after dismal league campaign

Manchester United have the chance to salvage something from a historically bad league campaign on Wednesday when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

Despite languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table with a mammoth record 17 defeats, the ‘Red Devils’ remain unbeaten in Europe and progressed to the final with a 7-1 aggregate demolition of La Liga outfit of Athletic Bilbao.

That win means Ruben Amorim’s side now have a chance to now secure Champions League football for next season via the back door of winning the Europa League – despite the dismal league campaign.

Defender Harry Maguire, who has once again become an integral part of Ruben Amorim’s system despite an up-and-down few years with the club, says the players will ‘give everything’ in a huge match for the club. “Of course, it’s a big game,” said the defender, speaking ahead of the final. “We know it’s such a big game for everyone, the fans, after such a disappointing season for the club. But we believe in ourselves, we believe that we can beat anybody on our day.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham captain Son Hueng-min spoke of his desire to make history by winning his first major European final with the club when Spurs face Manchester United for the Europa League on Wednesday.

Son, who will be entering the last year of his contract next season, is determined to get his first and only trophy since joining the club in 2015.

Mazraoui calls premier league season “Shitty” ahead of Europa League Final

Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui has delivered a candid assessment of the club’s turbulent season, bluntly labelling their Premier League campaign as “shitty” while pinning hopes on a Europa League triumph to salvage pride.

Speaking at the club’s media day ahead of next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, the Moroccan international didn’t hold back.

“Europa League season will be a big success, but the Premier League season will be shitty,” Mazraoui said. “That’s just the reality. Of course, in the end, you might have a trophy, but the Premier League is the main competition — it’s every week, week in, week out, and that’s what people judge you on.”

Mazraoui, who joined United after spells at top European clubs, admitted the losing culture this season has been difficult to digest.

“I come from clubs where I’m not used to losing. I will never get used to losing, wherever I am. So yeah, it’s painful,” he said. “Life is sometimes painful, and you just have to go through it.”

Despite the disappointment, the defender remains upbeat ahead of the high-stakes final, drawing on his World Cup experience with Morocco.

“It’s not my first high-pressure game. I’ve played in a World Cup semi-final,” he said. “This is similar in a way. I love the pressure.”

Manchester United’s domestic woes hit a new low after their 17th league defeat — a 2-0 home loss to West Ham — which left them 16th in the Premier League table. Head coach Ruben Amorim described the season as “embarrassing,” even suggesting it might be the worst team in the club’s history.

United now look to the Europa League final as a last chance at silverware — and Champions League qualification — in what has been a chaotic campaign marked by inconsistency, internal tension, and mounting pressure on players and staff alike.

Spanish coach Riveiro leaves South African club amid Al Ahly link

Spanish coach José Riveiro was released early from his position as head coach of South African football club Orlando Pirates, the team announced in a statement on Monday.

Riveiro’s departure comes amid reports that he will join Egyptian club Al Ahly ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup that will take place in the United States in June.

“José approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club”, Orlando Pirates Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza said in the statement.

“His contribution since joining the Club has been immense. We learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us”, Khoza added.

Riveiro spent nearly three years at Orlando Pirates. Under his leadership, the club was crowned vice-champion of the 2023 South African Premiership and was runner-up of the 2025 Nedbank Cup.

The Spaniard’s contract with the South African club originally ran until the end of June 2025.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to Orlando Pirates for allowing me the opportunity to leave before the end of my contract“, Riveiro said before thanking the club, the players and the supporters.

Orlando Pirates said Riveiro “will be on the bench for the final time” at the team’s game against the Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday night.

Riveiro is rumoured to joined Al Ahly according to Egyptian media, but the Cairo-based club has not announced talks with the 47-year-old Spaniard.

Al Ahly has been without a full-time coach since Marcel Koller left last month after elimination in the CAF Champions League semifinals by the South African Mamelodi Sundowns.

Al Ahly is often considered the most successful football club in Africa. The team has won a record 44 Egyptian Premier League titles and has been crowned winners of the CAF Champions League 12 times.

It has qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by winning the African title in 2021, then again in 2023 and 2024.

The Egyptian club is set to play Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the opening game of the tournament on June 14.

Al Ahly has already won 4 Club World Cup bronze medals, most recently in 2023.

Hat trick for Salah as he wins ‘Footballer of the Year’ for a third time

It’s a hat trick for Mohamed Salah after the Liverpool forward was voted Britain’s ‘Footballer of the Year’ for a record-tying third time.

The accolade is handed out by the Football Writers Association (FWA). First awarded in 1948, it is the oldest individual soccer award in the world. Salah previously won the title in 2018 and 2022.

Arsenal great Thierry Henry is the only other player to have captured it three times.

With 28 goals and 18 assists, Egyptian-born fan-favourite Salah topped the Premier League this season and played a key role in Liverpool winning the title for the second time in five years.

The FWA said Salah won 90 percent of the votes cast by more than 900 members, making it the “biggest winning margin this century.”

Salah’s Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk was second and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was third.

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo won this year’s women’s award.

Alexander-Arnold confirms departure from Liverpool after 20 years

Trent Alexander-Arnold sat down, took a deep breath and uttered the words many Liverpool knew would be coming.

“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club,” he said into a camera, “I will be leaving at the end of the season.”

Alexander-Arnold didn’t mention his next destination when confirming his imminent departure from Liverpool on his social media accounts but the England right back is widely expected to move to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The locally born Alexander-Arnold, who joined Liverpool at the age of 6 and has won every major honor with the club, said it was “easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”

He has announced it barely a week after clinching a second Premier League title with the Reds, pushing them onto 20 English top-flight championships — tied for the record with Manchester United.

“This club has been my whole life — my whole world — for 20 years,” the 26-year-old Alexander-Arnold wrote. “From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.

“But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally. I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here.”

Fans might feel let down

While Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have recently signed new two-year deals with Liverpool, there was lingering uncertainty over the future of Alexander-Arnold, who was also out of contract at the end of this season.

Some fans will be unhappy he has run down his contract and not allowed Liverpool to get any money for one of its star assets.

“I completely understand that the news will disappoint a lot of people, will anger people, it will make them upset,” Alexander-Arnold told Liverpool’s official website. “Obviously that went into the decision as well — it’s something you don’t want to do, you don’t want to ever have these moments where you feel like you’re letting a lot of people down, you’re disappointing a lot of people.

“But I’ve had to make a decision for me, it’s as simple as that. It’s a difficult one, it’s one that has played on my mind for a long time but being able now to get it off my chest will feel like a weight is lifted.”

Alexander-Arnold said he hasn’t spoken publicly about his future in recent months because he wanted the “to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No. 20.”

His trophies and that assist against Barcelona

Alexander-Arnold won the Premier League in 2020 and again this year, as well as the Champions League in 2019, the FA Cup, English League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Since making his senior debut in October 2016, he has been key to revolutionizing the role of a full back, with Alexander-Arnold having been Liverpool’s most creative player at times with his marauding runs down the right and his ability to come infield and pick out passes to the team’s attackers.

Arguably the most famous moment of his Liverpool career was when his quickly taken corner set up a goal for Divock Origi to complete a memorable comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals in 2019.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody — my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters — for the last 20 years,” Alexander-Arnold wrote.

“I’ve been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all. My love for this club will never die.”

Another potential bargain for Madrid

If he does go to Madrid, it would be as a free agent and he’d follow in the footsteps of the likes of Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and Xabi Alonso in swapping Anfield for the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alexander-Arnold would be joining England teammate Jude Bellingham in Madrid as well as Kylian Mbappé, who moved there in June 2024 on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool said Alexander-Arnold “will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for his contribution during a sustained period of success.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has Conor Bradley as a ready-made back-up for Alexander-Arnold, but is likely to go into the transfer market for another replacement.

The Club World Cup

Liverpool said Alexander-Arnold will be departing “once his deal ceases on June 30, 2025,” though there’s a chance he will leave earlier should he go to Madrid.

In October, FIFA announced interim transfer rules allowing players whose contracts expire on June 30 to sign early as free agents for one of the 32 teams — such as Madrid — who qualified for the relaunched Club World Cup.

If Madrid and Liverpool were to come to an agreement, Alexander-Arnold could represent the Spanish team for two weeks from mid-June on an exceptional basis — before his formal contract expires — in a tournament that is technically still part of the current season.

Manchester City win English Premier League title

– –

Manchester City have won a third Premier League title in four years after closest challengers Manchester United were beaten by Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now 10 points ahead of second-placed United, who have just three games remaining.

It is the seventh time City have finished top of the English football pyramid and the fifth in nine years.

“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other,” said Guardiola.

“This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.

– –

“They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced – and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless.

“Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient.”

Manager Guardiola, 50, has now won eight domestic trophies since arriving in Manchester in 2016.

City had the chance to wrap up the title themselves on Saturday, but suffered a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

– –

However, Leicester completed the job for them with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

It is the sixth time the Premier League title was decided at Old Trafford – the most of any venue, and three of which have been for other sides.

It is City’s second trophy in a little over two weeks after they beat Tottenham to claim the Carabao Cup and they are also in their first Champions League final after beating Paris St-Germain in midweek.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in September 2008, City have won 12 cups and this is the third time they have clinched a league and EFL Cup double.

British Football Remains at Risk

The start of 2020 saw the cancellation of major sporting events across the world including British footballing as the Premier League and below found themselves on hold until the summer where games were able to be picked up again – throughout the year however there were always concerns that cancellations could come through at a moment’s notice, and as many eyes kept a close watch on case numbers and risk factors. Fortunately, the remainder of the 2020 season was able to be drawn out to a conclusion, but 2021 may not be looking so promising.

The start of the year saw a new lockdown placed on the country, although not quite as strict as the first lockdown that caused the many cancellations throughout the start of 2020 it is thought that some of the restrictions will be much heavier in the coming weeks as case numbers continue to increase. As it stands, elite level sports have been given the pass to keep going ahead as scheduled, but any changes in restriction will impact this – although there have already been calls for some stating that changing measures may not have an impact, as internal changes could come sooner.

The most notable comes from the EFL, responsible for running the EFL Championship, the second highest football league in the UK. There has been a steady rise of positive coronavirus cases amongst elite level athletes that has been causing concern, with some stating that suspending the EFL season may look ‘inevitable’ – for now it appears as if things are still moving ahead as planned but we’ve seen in professional sporting how quickly this can change when things do change. Other leagues and sporting events haven’t shared the same sentiment in voicing concerns, but it’s likely all are feeling the same strains and pressures of rising cases and future uncertainty.

Fortunately, alternatives have been a boon to fans and punters alike over the past year as online entertainment options have become much more widely used. Despite efforts to make some more difficult to access with blocks on advertising and restrictions on services, many online betting and gambling sites here have become available and aren’t subscribed to initiatives such as Gamstop which also aim to reduce participation options, so even with cancellations to things such as football, there are still plenty of opportunities in entertainment with the additional free time many of us now have.

The next few weeks will be crucial for English football, however, as March will signal the discussion around future restrictive measures if none have been put in place before then – until then it’s just a waiting game whilst also watching figures in hopes that any outbreaks can be contained, that testing continues at a similar pace to identify and potential issues, and even nods toward possible vaccinations for players if arrangements can be made in that space as it becomes more readily available to the general public in the coming weeks and months too.
