LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Friday, May 10, 2024 arrived in the country from the United States of America and Kenya where he attended the US-Africa Business Summit and the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit respectively.
Speaking on arrival, Chakwera announced that the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which was co-hosting the summit, has committed to come to Malawi with more infrastructure development.
Earlier this week, President Chakwera and MCC Chief Executive Officer, Alice Albright commemorated the launch of a $350 Million Transport and Land Compact at MCC’s 20th Anniversary Tribute Dinner.
The compact is focusing on new road corridors targeting rural areas to benefit smallholder farmers as they face a lot of challenges in accessing urban, region as well as export markets.
Chakwera also engaged prospective investors in Texas on the sidelines of the summit. He urged the investors to consider investing in Malawi to help the nation through meaningful investments and has assured them full government support.
The Malawi leader also attended the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, at the invitation of Kenyan Presiden,t William Ruto.
Speaking during the summit, Chakwera emphasized the need for Africa to intensify efforts in addressing soil degradation issues across the continent which has been worsened by climate change.
Chakwera, who arrived through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, said there is need to work on the soil in order to advance pillar number one of the Malawi 2063 vision, which is Agricultural Productivity, Commercialisation.
President Chakwera was welcomed by Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, Cabinet Ministers and other senior government officials.
