Experts hail Chakwera’s US-Africa Business, Soil health summits

LILONGWE-(MANA)-The country’s social-economic experts  have  hailed  the participation of President Lazarus Chakwera’s at the Unites States (US) Africa Business Summit in Dallas and  at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, saying  it will help boost the countrys economy and improve the the livelihoods of Malawians.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), renowned Political and Socio-Economic Commentator, Humphreys Mvula, said the Millennium Challenge Corporation-MCC Compact 2  initiative is likely to transform the transportation sector by constructing roads, which will create a conducive environment in tourism, agriculture, and mining sectors, resulting in job creation for the people.

“The trip taken by President Chakwera looks very promising in the process of amplifying and implementing the ATM strategy, which he is spearheading to revamp the country’s economy.

Through the initiative we should expect a number of both white and blue collar workers to be employed resulting in wealth creation among Malawians” said Mvula

He commended President Chakwera for his continued efforts in mobilising resources to ensure the livelihoods of Malawians are taken care of.

Mvula  insisted on the need for Malawians to rally behind President Chakwera to make Malawi a transformative nation through various development initiatives.

Executive Director for the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT), Willy Kambwandira, expressed his appreciation for the outstanding progress of the project and has urged President Chakwera to ensure that the projects are successfully implemented.

Kambwandira also expressed his optimism for positive results from the trip and said he  looks forward to seeing the fruits of their labour.

In his remarks, Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu said Malawi’s recent participation in the US-Africa Business Summit witnessed the launch of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Transportation and Land Compact worth $350 million during MCC’s 20th Anniversary Tribute Dinner.

“The compact, which will focus on the country’s transportation infrastructure and land productivity, aligns with Malawi’s Agriculture, Tourism and Mining (ATM) Strategy and Malawi’s development blueprint, the Malawi 2063 Vision” said kunkuyu.

He stated the compact which will significantly bolster critical infrastructure projects in the country, including road upgrades in key agriculture, tourism and mining areas, is poised to enhance the transportation of goods and services, to boost trade, tourism, investment and economic growth.

He indicated that through the $244,950,000 Accelerated Growth Corridors (AGC) Project, the compact will help Malawi address transportation challenges for agricultural commodities from farm to market.

The project will also help to create a transparent and competitive environment for transporters among other things. This will stimulate more agro-economic activities in these corridors and boost agriculture commercialisation in the country.

He also disclosed that the American Catalyst Facility for Development (ACFD) Project of the compact is also set to bolster investment in the country.

He said the project is designed to facilitate United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) investment in Malawi to catalyse private investment in the country.

Additionally, through the Increased Land Productivity Project worth over 44 million dollars, the compact will support efforts to improve land use and management. The project will help citizens to utilise land efficiently as well as improve agricultural productivity.

Kunkuyu said that Malawian companies will also benefit from the compact for they have the opportunity to participate in the projects. This will both improve local companies’ financial standing and job creation in the country.

He said President Chakwera’s attendance at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Kenya also yielded unprecedented results for agriculture in the country. On the sidelines of the summit, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) assured President Chakwera of 45 million dollars to support agricultural productivity, enhancing fertilizer and soil health. The investment will significantly address Malawi’s food security challenges and boost socioeconomic development.

Kunkuyu further said that the MCC, AGRA and other agreements that Malawi has made during the two summits will have a transformative impact on the country’s development agenda.

The agreements will help Malawi improve its transportation infrastructure and agriculture productivity, springboarding Malawi into a more self-sufficient nation.

On arrival on Friday from the USA and Kenya  President Chakwera announced the launch of the US$350 million MCC Compact 2 and various agreements the Malawi delegation made with investors on the sidelines of these two summits.

Are Malawians benefitting from Chakwera’s globetrotting?

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In recent news, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has returned to Malawi from the United States of America and Kenya, where he attended various summits and meetings.

While the President has announced commitments from the Millenium Challenge Corporation for infrastructure development in Malawi and engaged with prospective investors, it is important to question whether these globetrotting activities truly benefit the common man in the country.

First and foremost, the question arises as to whether the President’s presence at these international events was truly necessary.

Could these errands have been effectively delegated to a minister or another official, thus saving time and resources that could be better utilized within the country?

Malawi is currently facing severe economic challenges, including high levels of poverty, unemployment, and a struggling agriculture sector.

With such pressing issues at hand, it is crucial that government officials prioritize their efforts towards addressing these domestic concerns.

Furthermore, the President’s engagement with prospective investors in Texas raises concerns about the actual impact of such interactions on the Malawian economy.

While it is important to attract foreign investment to spur economic growth, it is equally important to ensure that these investments benefit the local population and contribute to sustainable development.

Without proper oversight and transparency, foreign investments run the risk of benefiting only a few individuals and corporations, rather than the broader Malawian populace.

Moreover, the President’s attendance at international summits such as the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Kenya may be seen as admirable on the surface.

However, the question remains as to whether such high-level participation actually translates into tangible benefits for the average Malawian farmer.

The issues of soil degradation and climate change are undeniably important, but it is crucial that any solutions or initiatives discussed at these events are effectively implemented at the grassroots level to make a real difference in the lives of Malawians.

In addition, the $350 Million Transport and Land Compact announced by the President in collaboration with the Millennium Challenge Corporation raises questions about the allocation of such a significant amount of funding.

While infrastructure development is essential for economic growth and improved connectivity within Malawi, it is imperative that these funds are utilized efficiently and effectively to address the most pressing needs of the population.

Without proper oversight and accountability, there is a risk that such large-scale projects may not deliver the intended benefits to the common man.

Overall, the President’s globetrotting activities raise concerns about the allocation of time, resources, and attention towards international engagements, while pressing domestic issues remain unaddressed.

It is essential that government officials prioritize the needs of the Malawian population and focus on implementing sustainable solutions to uplift the country from its current economic challenges.

By delegating errands and engagements to capable officials and ensuring transparency and accountability in all endeavors, the government can truly work towards improving the lives of all Malawians.

Chakwera was speaking in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday night during a Malawi-Texas Business Roundabout meeting.

According to Chakwera, Malawi needs to move out of the poverty trap but that it can only do that with trusted investors.

During the roundtable, the Malawi leader said the country has plenty of opportunities in agriculture, mining and tourism.

“We want serious irrigation farming. We want big time mining and we want to market Malawi,” Chakwera said.

Chakwera has since assured potential investors of a conducive environment characterised by requisite legal, institutional and infrastructure mechanisms put in place to support large-scale investments.

Trade Minister Sosten Gwengwe highlighted the specific areas in the ATM Strategy that Malawi would like foreign investors to come in.

The areas included livestock production, wheat production, macadamia nuts production, cotton farming and ginning legumes and oil seed production as well as tea and sugar.

US-Africa Business Summit: Chakwera announces Malawi Transport, Land Compact in operational

TEXAS-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has announced that the US$350 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact 2, also known as the Malawi Transport and Land Compact, is now operational.

In a post on his official Facebook page, President Chakwera revealed that construction will soon commence on four road corridors across the country as part of the Increased Land Productivity Project.

To the north, there will be an upgrade of the 67 km stretch from Chikwawa (Rumphi) to Euthini (Mzimba).

In the Central region, the road from Mkanda (Mchinji) to Mwase/Linga (Kasungu) will be upgraded over a distance of 88 km, with another 53 km segment being upgraded in Lilongwe from Chileka to Chigwirizano via Phiri la Njuzi and Malingunde.

Chakwera stated that the Eastern Region would see an upgrade of the 79 km stretch from Chamtulo in Mangochi (off the Golomoti to Monkey Bay road) to Mkutumula near Balaka Market in Ntcheu.

He highlighted that these corridor roads will enhance the flow of agricultural products from farms to markets.

Additionally, the compact aims to build Malawi’s capacity in land management reforms to maximize land revenue for both rural farmers and the national economy.

“My delegation and I attended the official inauguration of the Compact here in Texas. In reciprocation, MCC Chief Executive Officer Ms. Alice Albright will later this month join us in Malawi for the official groundbreaking of one of these landmark projects,” said Chakwera.

Malawi’s second compact under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which rolled out in 2022 after meeting the required conditions for “Entry Into Force”, is set to benefit over five million Malawians, according to a joint statement from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA)-Malawi II.

Malawi has a road network of 24,929 km, of which 20,856 km are unpaved.

Roads are the most dominant transport mode in the country, handling more than 70% of internal freight traffic and 99% of passenger traffic. Road transport also plays a crucial role in international trade, handling more than 90% of freight and passenger traffic.

Malawi’s designated public road network consists of 15,451 kilometers of roads, of which only 26% (4,038 km) is paved. The rest — 11,413 km or 74% of the network — is either earth or gravel.

The public road network is classified into five main categories: Main, Secondary, Tertiary, Urban, and District.

The development of highways and interstate corridors has facilitated economic growth by connecting economic entities and activities within and between regions.

Corridors serve multiple functions, including acting as conduits for movement, filters, sinks, and sources of materials to the uplands.

Sustainable land management is essential for achieving various environmental, social, and economic goals. By adopting sustainable land practices, we can enhance the health of our ecosystems, improve food security, and boost the livelihoods of rural communities while reducing environmental degradation.

He went on to say that Malawi’s Transport Master Plan has mapped out corridors to extend and rehabilitate the rail to facilitate the flow of agricultural products to urban, regional, and export markets.

The AARG Consortium was established in November 2022 and comprises of recognized firms specializing in railway design, engineering, construction, and management.
