LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-About 19 public officers have been arrested following MK6.2 billion Covid-19 funds abuse report.
In a press statement made available to The Maravi Post, Malawi Police Service (MPS) Spokesperson James Kadadzera disclose arrested public officers are currently in the hands of the police
“Following the audit exercise conducted by the National Audit Office (NAO), Malawi Police Service (MPS) is informing Malawians of the arrests being made on individuals suspected to have abused Covid-19 funds meant for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
“So far, fourteen have been arrested. They include: Mr. Prince Mtelela, Administration Officer in the Office of President and Cabinet; Mrs. Pudenciana Makalamba, Commissioner, Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services; Mr. Mzati Mkolokosa, former Director of Information and Mr. Martin Mainja of Pest Chem 1B,” says Kadadzera.
He added, “Ten more have been arrested from the district councils of Blantyre, Thyolo, Zomba, Machinga, Ntcheu, Dedza and Salima. Police detectives are on the ground and more arrests are imminent. The suspects will be charged with theft by public servant, among other charges”.
Meanwhile Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has fired Labour Minister Ken Kandodo for Covid-19 funds abuses despite paying the money worth MK1.4million back to government coffers.
