BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has moved swiftly to crack down on violent behaviour and protect the integrity of the game, following a shocking incident that marred a recent TNM Super League fixture.
Ekhaya FC’s goalkeeper Elias Missi has been slapped with a three-match suspension after being found guilty of violent conduct during a heated match against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on July 2 at Kamuzu Stadium.
The incident, which saw Missi reportedly strangle Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju, triggered public outrage and prompted an immediate review by the SULOM Disciplinary Committee.
In a bold move to send a clear message, Ekhaya FC has also been fined a hefty MK3 million for the actions of its player and the subsequent disruption that brought the league and its sponsors into disrepute.
While players’ passion often defines football’s drama, SULOM has made it clear that violence and indiscipline will not be tolerated.
The committee noted that the incident not only disrupted the flow of the game but also harmed the image of league sponsor TNM plc and undermined the league’s core values of sportsmanship and respect.
The ruling marks a significant step in SULOM’s campaign to reinforce discipline and maintain professionalism across Malawi’s top-flight football.
It also sets a precedent as the league pushes for greater accountability from clubs and individual players alike.
