BLANTYRE— The national football regulatory body, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has offered the Belgium expatriate coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG), a three-year deal.
Geneugden’s agent, Antonio Carlo, and FAM, confirmed this on Saturday. FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, described the choice as outstanding, adding that new the coach will start the job immediately.
“We are delighted to give van Geneugden the mantle to be Malawi coach,” Nyamiladu said.
The 48-year old coach, who last managed Enosis Neon Paralimni in the Cypriot First Division, on Saturday said that he was “extremely proud’ to be appointed Malawi head coach.”
RVG’s first task will be preparing the national flag carrier Flames in the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) preliminary qualifier match against Madagascar on April 22.
While RVG has some experience at club level, his assignment as the Senior coach for the Flames is the first at both national team and in Africa. His last coaching post was at Enosis Neon Paralimni FC in the Cypriot First Division team.
RVG has an impressive playing career that stretches from 1980 to 2002. He started his professional career at Belgian side Thor Waterschei from 1980 to 1988, then joined the Dutch side RKC Waalwijk where he played for a season.
He then returned to his homeland where he continued his career with Antwerp, SK Lommel, Germinal Ekeren, Lokeren, and retired at Verbroedering Geel in 2002.
