LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As the Global Consumer Movement is celebrated globally on March 15th, the Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) is advocating for a transition to a multifaceted approach that tackles the unique challenges that Malawian consumers face.

In a statement signed by CAMA Executive Director John Kapito states that the day is commemorated to encourage customers to demand decent and quality goods and products.

According to him, this year the day is being commemorated under the theme of “Demanding a just transition to sustainable lifestyles in Malawi”, which has a significant impact on consumers in Malawi who are struggling with sustainable practices.

He state that the market is filled with substandard products, putting the health and safety of consumers at risk.

He adds that the country lacks monitoring and inspection mechanisms for a better future for consumers.

“There is a need for consumer protection law enforcement to safeguard consumers’ rights, as well as empower them with knowledge and skills to ensure affordability and sustainability in their products and services,”said Kapito.

He stated that policy makers, businesses, and consumers should work together towards a just transition to sustainable lifestyles and safe products for all Malawians.

He called on the government to strengthen policies that support sustainable development, social justice, and consumer welfare.

The cost of goods in Malawi keeps on rising, causing consumers to face challenges.

Recently, the Illovo company, the country’s sugar producer, raised sugar to sustain their operation.
