BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a significant step towards rebuilding the lives of those affected by Cyclone Freddy, the Minister of Lands, Deus Gumba, has officially handed over 10 newly constructed houses to survivors in Chikuse Village, Chikwawa District.
The handover ceremony, held under the leadership of Senior Chief Makhwira, marks a crucial milestone in the government’s efforts to provide safe and secure shelter to families displaced by the devastating cyclone.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Gumba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to relocating affected families to safer areas.
“The handing over of these houses symbolises hope, restoration and a government that is committed to ensuring that every Malawian has access to safe shelter,” Gumba said.
The minister’s words resonated with the attendees, who expressed gratitude for the government’s support during a challenging time.
The construction of the houses was made possible through financial support from Illovo Sugar Malawi, which contributed K180 million towards the project. Illovo Sugar Malawi Nchalo Estate General Manager, Rick Pillay, highlighted the company’s pride in supporting initiatives that uplift surrounding communities.
“We are proud to be part of this initiative aimed at supporting those affected by Cyclone Freddy,” Pillay said.
This initiative is part of the broader national recovery effort led by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s government. Through the Tigwirane Manja (Let’s Hold Hands) Initiative, the government has so far constructed over 200 houses for affected families.
The program demonstrates the administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and rebuilding infrastructure damaged by natural disasters.
The newly constructed houses come with accompanying sanitary facilities, ensuring that the beneficiaries have access to basic amenities.
The government’s efforts aim to provide not only shelter but also dignity and a sense of security to those who lost their homes and livelihoods during the cyclone.
As the government continues its efforts to rebuild and support affected communities, the handover of these houses serves as a beacon of hope for many.
The collaboration between the government and private sector partners like Illovo Sugar Malawi underscores the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges posed by natural disasters.
The beneficiaries, who were visibly moved by the gesture, expressed their gratitude to the government and Illovo Sugar Malawi for the support.
For many, the new homes represent a fresh start and a chance to rebuild their lives in safety and security.
