Malawi breastfeeding rate down to 60%

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As the world commemorates Breastfeeding week, Malawi Demographic health survey reveals that exclusive breastfeeding among infants from 0-6 months has declined from 72 percent in 2010 to 60 percent in 2024.

Ministry of Health Launch the breastfeeding week which commences from August 1 to 7 this year with the theme, “Priotioze Breastfeeding, Create sustainable support systems”.

Addressing the news conference on Friday, August 1, 2025, Principle Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Samson Mdolo said Malawi has experienced improvement in some nutrition indicators.

However the prevalence of stunting among under five remains at 38 percent as reported in 2024.

Mdolo said only 8.7 percent of children aged 6 to 23 months meet the Minimum Acceptable Diet (MAD).

He said the propotion of women meeting minimum dietary diversity (MDDW) is equally low with 25 percent and inadequate micronutrient intake contribution to microdeficiency and anaemia remains a major challenge.

“Anaemia among 5 to 59 months is high at 63 percent while a total of 33 percent of women 15-49 years of age are anaemic,” said Mdolo.

He call upon work places including government departments, Media fraternity communities to join foces in giving women enough martenity leave which is crucial in supporting continuing breastfeeding.

Mdolo therefore calls for traditional leaders to support breastfeeding by debunking all cultural beliefs,Myths and misconceptions rooted in our traditions.

World Health Organization, Representative, Nimma Kimambo calls for mother’s support in household chores to allow them have enough space for breastfeeding.
