SALIMA-(MaraviPost)—In its continued corporate social responsibility drive in the education sector, the country’s main fuel carrier, Petroleum Importation Limited (PIL) on Friday donated desks worthy MK1.5 million to Parachute Battalion Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in the lake shore district of Salima.The desks’ donation is expected to improve girls’ enrollment at the school that have been learning on the floor due to insufficient of desks.
Established in 2004 with an enrollment of 700 students, Parachute CDSS which is located within a military air force base serves students from two Traditional Authorities (T.As)-Masanga and Bibi Kulunda.
Therefore, in its quest for PIL to meet Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), MK50 million has been put aside to address education and health sectors’ challenges in various communities across the nation.
So far the company has already made other consignments to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Kamboni Health Centre in Kasungu, and schools including Linga, Gumba, Njuli and Kadzakalowa CDSS in Nkhotakota, Mchinji, Chiladzulu and Ntcheu respectively.
Joined by PIL staff members and their spouses after the company’s Business Review and Team building session in the lakeshore district, General Manager Enwell Kadango said the donation was part of the institution’s an on-going initiative to contribute towards delivery of quality education in Malawi.
Kadango said that under his company’s strategic CSR initiative recognises that education is the solid foundation for building a prosperous nation hence the donation of educational materials to needy public schools.
He therefore expressed hope that desks’ donation will improve quality delivery of education including girls’ school enrollment.
“Our company promises to remain a keen player in the education sector, and we will do so by partnering with the education ministry since government can’t do it alone due to budgetary constraints,” said Kadango.
Receiving the donation on behalf of Parachute Battalion Commander in Chief, Major Masozi Kaliya, Commanding Officer lauded PIL for the timely support saying will go along way in changing students performance for the better.
Commanding Officer Kaliya urged other companies to emulate PIL gesture by also helping the school with resources to complete laboratory which has stalled due to financial challenges.
Sara Mustaf, one of Parachute CDSS’ students in form two echoed with the school’s authority for the needed to support laboratory completion project saying science lessons are likely to get better understanding among learners.
Petroleum Importers Limited is private company tasked with fuel importation in Malawi which has been importing bulk of fuel for the country since 1999.
