The Malawi Under-19 Girls Handball Team has made the country proud after winning a Silver medal at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Zone 6 Tournament.
The tournament, which took place in Zimbabwe from April 29 to May 3, saw Malawi’s young girls showcase their skills and determination, ultimately finishing as runners-up.
In the final match, the Under-19 team narrowly lost to Zambia with a score of 38-39, despite being red-carded.
The team’s performance was impressive, and their silver medal win is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Malawi sent two teams to the tournament, the Under-17 and Under-19 teams. While the Under-19 team excelled, the Under-17 team finished 5th. Despite not making it to the podium, the Under-17 team’s participation in the tournament is a valuable experience for the young players.
Ivy Chinangwa, Director of Sports Development and Recreation at the Malawi National Council of Sports, hailed the team for their achievement.
“We are proud of our girls for their outstanding performance in the tournament,” Chinangwa said, adding that, “This achievement is a testament to the potential of Malawian girls in sports, and we are committed to supporting their development.”
Chinangwa promised to render support towards the sport, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent.
“We will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that our girls continue to excel in handball and other sports,” she said.
The IHF Zone 6 Tournament brings together teams from Southern Africa, providing a platform for teams to compete and showcase their skills.
Malawi’s silver medal win is a significant achievement, and the team’s performance will likely inspire more young girls to take up the sport.
