LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Two opposition political parties, the United Democratic Front (UDF) and UTM, have expressed serious concerns with how the election results are being tabulated in several districts.
The two believe they are being shortchanged by fellow opposition party, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)
In a letter addressed to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), UTM President Dalitso Kabambe questioned the accuracy of results being transmitted and captured by the media.
“Upon reviewing the figures presented so far, we have serious reservations about their accuracy. It is alarming to note that the number of votes attributed to my candidacy do not reflect the realities observed at most polling stations,”
He adds; “There is a growing belief among our party officials and supporters that the presiding officers may have transmitted false figures to the final tally centre.”
Kabambe points out that such discrepancies undermine the integrity of our electoral process and the trust that the electorate places in the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The UDF on the other hand has also exposed glaring anomalies in the tallying and tabulation of both Parliamentary and Presidential votes in the Eastern Region districts of Machinga, Mangochi, Balaka and Zomba.
Secretary General, Genario Lemani, has requested MEC to look into anomalies an example of which is Mangochi South West Constituency which has 38,111 as the number of votes cast, exceeding number of registered voters which is 37,784.
Kabambe has since requested MEC to stop publication of election results by media houses up until all issues are ironed out.
