Malawi’s Scorchers outshine Lesotho in 3-0 victory

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, displayed class and determination on Friday afternoon as the girls defeated Lesotho 3-0 in a friendly match played at the Mpira Stadium at Chiwembe, Blantyre.

Star striker Asimenye Simwaka was in fine form, netting twice to give the home crowd a reason to cheer, while Sabina Thom added the third goal to seal a comfortable victory for the Scorchers.

Speaking after the match, Scorchers’ Head Coach Lovemore Fazili expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, saying the players had shown improvement compared to previous games where chances went unconverted.

“It was a fair game based on the results, and I am impressed by how the local players stepped up. In past matches, we failed to score despite creating opportunities but today we managed to find the back of the net three times, which is encouraging,” Fazili said.

He further praised the introduction of new faces in the squad stressing that the fresh talent represents the future of the national team.

“I am happy with the new players coming in. They are the future of the Scorchers. We only need to polish our midfield before Sunday’s game, but overall, I am very pleased,” he added.

On the other side, Lesotho’s Head Coach Shalane Lehohla admitted his team was second best on the day, highlighting that Malawi dominated with pace and intensity.

“It was a bad result for us, but Malawi was the better side, especially in terms of energy. We need to match that energy if we want to improve. Most of our players are new, and we are still in the process of building this team,” Lehohla remarked.

The match was part of a series of friendly games lined up to prepare the Scorchers for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against Angola in October.

So far, the team has played seven preparatory matches, providing valuable experience for both regulars and upcoming stars.

The Scorchers will return to action on Sunday at the same venue, where they will continue sharpening their tactics as the countdown to WAFCON intensifies.
