Some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials on Sunday, challenged the party’s Secretary-General Gustav Kaliwo’s decision to call for an MCP convention, and said he has no power.
On Saturday Kaliwo declared at a news conference that the MCP will hold a convention from 7 to 9 July this year, claiming he has the mandate to do this.
He said the convention follows the demands by the party’s district chairpersons.
Kaliwo further challenged the MCP President and National Executive Committee (NEC), to go to court if they do not agree with his decision.
“I have said it and no one will deny. We shall have a convention in July this year,” Kaliwo said.
However, the MCP Deputy SG, Eisenhower Mkaka and the party’s chairman for central region Patrick Chilondola, wondered where Kaliwo got the power to call for a convention.
According to them, the party’s constitution only give such power to the NEC and not Secretary-General.
“Kaliwo has not been attending the NEC meetings, apart from that, the NEC members are not aware of this, hence it is null and void,” argued Chilondola.
Mkaka also said that “according to the MCP constitution, the district Party chairpersons are mandated to submit their minutes to the NEC for the final decision, hence Kaliwo’s decision is unconstitutional.”
