War Crimes, Bucha Massacre and Russia’s Putin By Chido Nwangwu

“You may remember I got criticized for calling Putin a war criminal. Well, the truth of the matter, you saw what happened in Bucha … he is a war criminal.” Those heavy words came from U.S President Joe Biden on Monday  April 4, 2022, against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Biden called for the collation of materials: “We have to gather all the detail so this can be an actual… war crime trial.”

As the first weekend of April 2022 was closing, Biden saw the pictures, videos and possibly watched the CBS ‘60 Minutes’ report from inside Ukraine by its seasoned correspondent Scott Pelley. ’60 Minutes’ remains, for decades, the foremost  newsmagazine broadcast in the United States. Millions of families watch it, almost every Sunday.  For this past Sunday of April 3, 2022, Pelley delivered in greater detail, some of the chilling images of civilian massacres, mass graves and horrific crimes of war littered across the Ukrainian city called Bucha. It’s in a suburb of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

The United States and its allies are reportedly assessing evidences of the murderous visitations from the Russian armed forces (possibly accompanied by its “contractors” and mercenaries) to Bucha.

The Russian government has tried to minimize what happened in Bucha but those digital, 247 satellite recordings of earthscape, demographic profiles of locales, cities, countries, movements never go to sleep, in these times. Putin can control virtually anything broadcast and printed on the Russian multimedia. But he cannot control the unblinking eyes of the satellites orbiting the earth and other planets. The information they capture are unimaginable and, sometimes, available to those who can afford it.

On Monday, April 4, 2022, Ukraine’s embattled President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the disfigured city of Bucha. Again, while there, the visibly tormented leader accused Russia of “genocide.”

Everyday, since Thursday, February 24, 2022, when the superpower republic of Russia began its latest invasion of its smaller, historically-related neighbor Ukraine, Putin’s troops inflict milestones of tears, deep sorrow, indelible marks of bloodshed and awful environmental decimation of a beautiful country.

As a student of history, political science and power, I think that the autocratic leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin, believes that he can, literally, bomb and burn to ashes the collective soul and  national psyche-set of the traumatized peoples of Ukraine.
Although, metaphorically, at the end of the day, or should I say, the day after tomorrow, he will fail — like many other rulers before him who brought wars in their quests to impose their fevered imaginations of their countries’ ancient grandeur, in their pursuit of the restoration of some nostalgic past and realization of an expansionist sense of empire.

The facts of the situation are that the Russian contingent of armed forces and mercenaries acting, brutally, on the orders of President Putin have done a lot of damage. They are likely to do more; maybe worse!

After all, Putin has the brutal range and capacity to pound Ukraine until the courageous Ukrainians beg for remedial ceasefire and cessation of the Russian assault!

There are “rules of engagement” which forbid certain levels of violence, such as deliberate attacks and starvation of civilian populations, deliberate attacks on children, and other vicious, genocidal actions. It is no longer acceptable to the international community, humanitarian and legal conventions for war leaders to target hospitals and medical facilities. This Russian invasion has done those, repeatedly! Their actions are sickening to millions of people around the world especially in the African continent because they evoke reminders (not equivalencies) of some of the genocidal slaughter and starvation of the Igbo/Biafrans 1967-1970 in Nigeria.

The sheer callousness of their indiscriminate missile attacks, shellings and waste of human lives which seem to be the basic operating methods of engagement for Mr. Putin’s troops have led to their committing atrocities and mayhem and unforgettable crimes across Ukraine.

The incendiary heap of metal, cement, dead bodies of Ukrainians constitute a level of visual vulgarity which assault the sensibilities and spirit of decent people. By their own multiple delivery of missile and bomb packages, the Russians’ deliberately inflict ghoulish destruction of almost every major city. They have bombed most of the high-rise residential apartments into visually haunting, skeletal apparitions….

In my March 17, 2022 commentary published on USAfricaonline.com titled Zelensky, Biden, Putin and the road to war-crimes, I cautioned that President Putin’s army and mercenaries were galloping very aggressively to the highways and alleys of potential war crimes.
https://usafricaonline.com/2022/03/17/zelensky-biden-putin-and-the-road-to-war-crimes-by-chido-nwangwu/

It has become clear to the world that Putin’s war has  blooded and brutalized the individual and collective spirit of Ukrainians. Regardless, they remain unbowed! But, for how long?

Consequently, I’ve wondered what else the leaders of the north American and European continents are waiting for to, decisively, halt this violent obscenity and morally outrageous tactics and strategy of bombing Ukraine back to the Stone Age  — carried out on Putin’s order!

The only two consecutive home defeats in Brazil’s history

2014 is a year that probably most Brazilian football fans would like to forget. However, this team is always one of the most competitive ones, and fans can bet in Nigeria now on 1xBet on this squad.

In theory, this year should have been a fantastic one for the Brazilians. They were going to have the FIFA World Cup on their home soil for the first time since 1950. While the 2014 version of the Brazilian national team was far from being the best ever, fans still expected nothing less than the World Cup title that year.

It should be noted that one of the biggest shocks in the history of the sport occurred in the 1950 edition of the competition. Here the famous Maracanazo took place, where the Uruguayans defeated Brazil 2-1 in the final match.

Brazilian football nation team of 2014

The Brazilians fans thought that finally this was the chance to claim a World Cup title in their home country. Fans can bet on 1xBet in Nigeria right now on many different football matches from all over the world, including those of the FIFA World Cup.

The horrific Mineirazo

Brazil had reached the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after defeating Chile and Colombia in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, respectively.

However, those two opponents put up a fierce fight, making it very difficult for Brazil to win those matches. All those South American squads are available for wagering on at any moment by visiting the https://www.1xbet.ng/en/live/ website.

The opponent that was waiting for Brazil in that semi-final was none other than Germany. Probably many people already know what happened. The Brazilians suffered the worst football humiliation in their history, after the European team won 7-1. The 1xBet website also offers chances to wager on all the matches played by the Mannschaft.

A consolation that didn’t come

After the horrific defeat suffered by Brazil, there was no other choice than claiming the third place as a consolation prize. You can try live casino games from 1xBet while waiting for the next FIFA World Cup match.

Brazil faced the Netherlands in this match. This contest was played on the 12th of July 2014. Unfortunately for the Brazilians, the Dutch team won 3-0. The goals were scored by:

  • Robin Van Persie;
  • Daley Blind;
  • and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Not only this prevented Brazil from getting some sort of consolation prize after being trashed by the Germans. This also meant that, for the first time in the history of the Brazilian national squad, the team lost two consecutive home matches. That’s a record that the people from Brazil will want to forget soon. Only from 1xBet is it possible to try excellent live casino games, which can be used prior to the beginning of the next exciting FIFA World Cup.

Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The current TNM Super League leaders Blue Eagles FC hosts the fourth placed who are also the defending champions in a week four tight battle at Nankhaka Stadium on Saturday, in the capital Lilongwe.

Many questions are lingering in the heads of the supporters of the two sides who have created their own rivalry of recent past in cup and league games.

In 2018 Blue Eagles FC defeated Bullets in the finals of Airtel top 8 finals played at Bingu National Stadium through spot kick which they protested.

In 2019 TNM Superleague season the Cops beat Bullets at Nankhaka Stadium in the first round before Bullets revenged at Kamuzu Stadium. In the last five games in Super League the two have not lost any game, they both won four, drew once.

However both Blue Eagles FC and Nyasa Big Bullets are yet to test a defeat in the 2022/2023 Super League season having won three and two games they have played so far.

They meet on Saturday at Nankhaka Stadium, who will stop who?.Both teams are upbeat of getting positive results but the one who will have good technical and tactical approach will get it right.

Teams meeting in this season has elements which make this game crucial, one being players crossing the floor, the likes of Sankhani Mkandawire who is now the pillar for Eagles, Ben Manyozo, and of course goal minder Brighton Munthali who left Silver for area 30 outfit.

Bullets has many new players from Reserve side Patrick Mwaungulu, Zelliat Nkhoma, among them and have Hadji Wali who left Silver.

Eliah Kananji, Blue Eagles Coach, said it is a crucial game but as team has an aim and target this season which is getting points in each and every game it comes on their way hence everyone in the camp is optimistic of getting maximum points. Kananji added they have agreed to be collecting maximum points at home .

While Peter Mponda, Bullets assistant Coach, said they have prepared well for the encounter on Saturday, saying they know how good Blue Eagles are currently coached by their former Coach Kananji.Mponda added this is the right time to test their strength as they are looking forward to defend the title hence as coaches they have prepared their boys well for the fight.

“They have good players like Schumacher, Micium Mhone and other players who were with us but for the title defence we have to get points at Nankhaka”, Mponda was quoted.

Meanwhile other giants are having tricky fixtures in week four,as Silver Strikers have traveled to the northern part of Malawi to battle it out with Crocodiles of Karonga, Karonga United at the Karonga Stadium, Moyale Barracks FC hosts Mighty Wanderers at Mzuzu Stadium.

On Sunday Civo Service United hosts MAFCO FC at Civo Stadium on Sunday.Other fixtures rookies Rumphi United hosts Waka Waka Tigers at the Rumphi Stadium, Sable Farming hosts Red Lions at Mpira Stadium.

Will Smith banned from Oscars ceremonies for 10 years

American actor and film producer Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years after he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage during the awards night a fortnight ago.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Friday, Smith is also not permitted to attend any other events held by the Oscars over the next decade.

“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” said president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in a letter.

But the board did not decide to revoke Smith’s best actor Oscar he won last month for “King Richard.”

The decision was made during a Board of Governors meeting held earlier on Friday in Los Angeles. The meeting, initially scheduled for April 18, was expedited after Smith announced his resignation from the Academy last week.

The Hollywood’s top film group also apologized, stating that they “did not adequately address the situation in the room,” and thanked Rock for maintaining his composure onstage.

Smith’s fate was sealed by a board consisting of 54 members: three from each of the academy’s 17 branches, that range from acting and editing to marketing and public relations. There were three governors at large.

Comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards and before he presented the best documentary Oscar, made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith appearing ready to star in “G.I. Jane 2,” which was a veiled reference to her shaved head.

Pinkett Smith looked rolled her eyes at joke and, within moments, her husband made his way to the stage to slap Chris Rock. He returned to his seat and doubled down on his assault by yelling at Rock with expletives to warn the comedian from jokes against his Pinkett Smith.

Smith has described his actions as “shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” adding that he “betrayed the trust of the Academy” and “deprived other[s] … of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.”

His wife Pinkett Smith has spoken publicly in recent years about struggling with hair loss from alopecia, an autoimmune disease.

FBI exposes how Donald Trump smuggled White House’ 15 “Top Secret” files when left office

NEW YORK-(MaraviPost)-The FBI has started investigations into the handling of classified materials that were in the 15 boxes of material that were moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, Florida when Donald Trump left office in January 2021.

According to a Thursday night, April 7 report by the New York Times and Washington Post, the FBI probe was triggered by the discovery of ‘top secret’ information found in the boxes  and it was filled with documents and momentos from Trump’s four years in office.

Embattled Trump

In January 2, the National Archives and Records Administration recovered  15 boxes from Trump’s Florida estate, and revealed the move publicly in February, saying that the contents should have been handed over to the National Archives as required by the Presidential Records Act instead of being taken by Trump.

On Thursday, April 7, House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland pointing out that the National Archives wouldn’t release the contents of the 15 boxes of materials recovered from Mar-a-Lago and accused the DOJ of ‘obstructing’ the Congressional investigation.

‘The Committee does not wish to interfere in any manner with any potential or ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice,’ Maloney wrote.

‘However, the Committee has not received any explanation as to why the Department is preventing NARA from providing information to the Committee that relates to compliance with the [Presidential Records Act], including unclassified information describing the contents of the 15 boxes from Mar-a-Lago.’

The Times report then concluded that the ex-president would not likely be the target of the FBI-led investigation.

FDH Bank partners journalists, schools in tree planting

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FDH Bank Plc on Thursday partnered with the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ) and three schools in Blantyre in tree planting activities to promote a green environment.

Speaking in Blantyre, FDH Bank plc Senior Manager for Internal audit Potamira Kumpumula said under the Bank’s sustainability program FDH Cares.

FDH Group committed to plant 1 million trees by 2024 and since 2021.

The bank has championed the planting of 250 000 trees so far through their staff members, partners, customers and various stakeholders and initiatives in alignment with the Malawi 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“FDH Group recognizes the importance of a green environment and as a responsible corporate citizen it has reinforced its commitment to champion a sustainable green environment that will foster the development of the country and nurture a resilient country against various environmental and economic forces.”

Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) Environmental Education Manager Ausward Bonongwe commended FDH Bank plc for its commitment to protecting and sustaining the environment despite operating in a difficult economic environment as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

My Take On It: Attack on journalists is an attack on an essential pillar of democracy

“The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.” –Thomas Jefferson, 1787.

What is the role of the press in a democracy? A free and independent press is a key mechanism of a functioning, healthy democracy. In the absence of censorship, journalism exists as a watchdog of private and government action, providing information to maintain an informed citizenry of voters. – Popular tenet on press freedom.

Gondwe out of police probe

This week the Malawi Police Service behaved like its predecessor the Malawi Police Force of pre-Democratic Malawi. A social media report by Sylvester Ayuba James showed how manipulatable and overzealous some members of the Police can still behave, even in a democracy.

A journalist was arrested and held under severe archaic, fear-mongering investigation tactics of old. And the killing stab, his cellphone, and computers were confiscated, Police demanded the supply of the source of an article and computer passwords! Investigative journalist Gregory Gondwe’s crime: a news article he and the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) had published on an ongoing saga involving the government and heavyweight moneybags Indian businessmen.

Having survived as a journalist in the one-party state and even the misguided UDF first term rule, the news hit a raw nerve in me that reverberates still. During the 1960s and even during some years of the UDF rule (1994-1999), muzzling the press was the order of the day. The arrest of a journalist puts a check or a halt to society’s ability to hold the government and even some private citizens accountable for their actions, especially illicit or corrupt actions.

Sylvester wrote on Tuesday: “Being informed that Police have descended on PIJ Gregory Gondwe and seized all PIJ and Gregory’s personal computers and hand gadgets (cellphones). Apparently, they are forcing PIJ to reveal where it got the stamped document from the Attorney General pay out legal opinion.

“Very unfortunate that Indian businessmen have become a reason for our Government to start chewing its own children.

“More the reason to rally behind Citizens Against Impunity and Corruption in the next step that it will take in dealing with impunity if this journalist is not immediately released. In an age of Access to Information Act, we find this conduct to be retrogressive and against the ideals and aspirations of our Constitutional democracy.“

On its part, the Journalist Union of Malawi (JUMA) demanded the immediate release of Gondwe and furthermore a free and safe working environment, media freedom, and respect for access to information law. The Union also condemned the arbitrary arrest of Gondwe.

And weighing in, the Minister of Information and Digitalization, Gospel Kazako, affirmed that his ministry “is investigating the circumstances that led to the arrest of renowned investigative journalist Gregory Gondwe….” Describing the arrest as not a welcomed development.

While we thank the Minister of Information for stepping in here and icing his concern, as members of the press, we wish to let the Police Service, through the Homeland Security Ministry, know that the Police Service is a SERVICE to all Malawians, including media practitioners (journalists among them). It does not exist to do the bidding of a few choice heavy-armed individuals with money to burn and corrupt practices to hide.

Secondly, Malawi is a democracy, Police, and officers in governing sector (who are sustained by taxpayers’ revenue), must remain accountable to the citizens of the country. In the equation of democracy, accountability is inherently achievable through and by a press corps that is independent and vibrant, a press corps that operates in an environment that is free from coercion, threats, intimidation, and arrests based on flimsy and sometimes non-existent charges.

As I waxed lyrical on the tenets of this great pillar of democracy, Gondwe surfaced on social media and narrated scenes akin to what made James Hardley Chase a maestro of suspense and drama.

My fellow social media don, Nyengo commented that “if this a true narration of events – every rule of evidence gathering has been massacred; they endangered the life of a sister and her child; it all seems very amateurish!!” To which my reply was that the Police used a third person whose only crime (if a revelation of a crime can itself qualify as a crime), is that she is born in the family as the “suspected officer.”

Gondwe’s post: the Police erred on so many fronts, but I have stopped breathing; I am stuck on four painful atrocities against Gondwe, which is an affront to the work of the free media, we boast we enjoy in Malawi.

1.     Gondwe is being compelled to reveal his sources for his journalistic article.

2.     Gondwe asked for a lawyer, did not get one, police officers continued to use contradictory and intimidating tactics

3.     Polic ransacked PIJ offices, still without Gondwe’s lawyer present

4.     Police confiscated cellphones, laptops, and computers and demanded passwords – all these contain live investigations/operations of the PIJ

a.      These are PIJ’s instruments of production

b.     The act impedes the work of the media.

What the Police SERVICE must keep at the front of its mind, and gingerly remember, it is a service, not a force; the Police should be professional and cease being used by individual politicians or heavyweight moneybags, it should respect and look at media as its collaborators in maintaining our democracy. This is because had it not been for the contribution of a vibrant and free press, energetic social media, Malawi would not be a democracy, Malawi would not have averted from a third UDF term, Malawi would not have had its first female president, and most important of all, Malawi would not be in the Third Reich.

And lastly, to all people in positions of influence, come to grips with reality, when you do right, take accountability for your actions and decisions, you have no fear when they are recounted in the press; however, when you err and act in a corrupt manner, then fear the press you should!

To the Malawi Police Service and the Inspector-General, please return to Gregory Gondwe his instruments of production in their untampered form. Please apologize to the Media in Malawi!

All eyes are ON THE MALAWI POLICE SERVICE TO DO THE RIGHT THING!

FDH boss mentors Monkey Bay students

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-First Discount House (FDH) Managing Director Mike Chiwalo Thursday took time off his busy schedule to mentor students at Monkey Bay Community Day Secondary school in Mangochi.

Chiwalo took time to encourage the students on the fruits of working hard and excelling in their studies saying the world now is looking for people with good qualifications.

Chiwalo (left) poses with students and teachers in Monkey Bay

“There are good things that are attached to your achievements especially when you have the required qualifications, companies will remunerate you properly, so do not lose focus in your studies so that you achieve your goals,” said Chiwalo.

He said the FDH Group started the mentorship programme with an aim of mentoring secondary students for them to become productive citizens.

“FDH, being a Malawian owned company, wants to help secondary school learners in the country to grow with entrepreneurship skills which can help them become huge players in the national economy. FDH Financial Holdings has put in place about K150 million to support the education sector in the country.”

“Apart from our general mentorship program, FDH also encourages its employees to adopt a secondary school learner and mentor him or her through career guidance and other aspects so that the learners might have a role model when pursuing education,” said Chiwalo.

During the mentorship event, First Discount House also donated K2 million to the school to be used for purchasing classroom desks.

“We discussed with the Monkey Bay CDSS officials to get their views on how we can assist them under our mentorship program and they asked for classroom desks. As a company we have a program called FDH Cares which is one of the key projects which we are implementing to help the government achieve sustainable development goals hence our donation today,” said Chiwalo.

He said through the FDH Cares program, FDH is sponsoring needy university students in the country as well as supporting some graduate youths with start-up capital for those with brilliant business ideas.

In his remarks, Head Teacher for Monkey Bay CDSS Mike Malasa described the donation as timely because it has managed to fill the gap which existed at the school.

Malasa said about 50 percent of the learners had no desks which was demotivating to them, hence the coming in of the desk will greatly improve performance for the learners.

“We are very grateful for this donation by FDH Financial Holdings. At the moment we are facing another shortage of classroom blocks such that we can appreciate if other partners come in to assist,” said Malasa.

Apart from Monkey Bay CDSS, FDH Holdings conducted similar mentorship sessions at Lunzu, St. Patrick’s and Ntcheu Secondary Schools.

Rwanda has vaccinated over 60% of its population

Rwanda has become one of the few African countries to achieve the goal of vaccinating over 60 percent of its population against Covid-19. By the end of 2021, the East african nation had already administered vaccine doses to more than 40% of its 12 million citizens. A number that reached the World Health organization’s target for this period.

The country’s vaccination rate comes behind the small island nations of the Seychelles and Mauritius.

To continue this trend, authorities in the capital Kigali have set up vaccination sites in busy public places like bus stations. Medical staff say between 200 and 400 residents receive jabs each day and many of them have already registered for booster shots.

Rwanda remains an exception as, according to the World Health Organization, about 15% of the continent’s population is fully vaccinated.
