3 Sports that don’t receive enough attention

Sports media has grown into one of the main forms of entertainment for the masses all over the globe. And as such, it focuses especially on sports with the largest masses of viewers, like men’s association football, tennis and various motorsports.

There are, in turn, many other sports that deserve recognition, widely covered among the many Betway online betting markets. A few examples where individual athletes deserve more time in the spotlight and much more recognition is women’s football, handball, and water polo.

Today, we’ll cover several competitive sports that, while interesting and healthy activities, are not given enough attention by the media and the fans.

Women’s Football

Despite the fact that there is a growing interest in the sport on the level of clubs as well as international, the working conditions simply do not reflect the change in trend. In addition to other sectors of the economy, gender inequality has confirmed that women’s football suffers from low pay, lack of support, and precarious conditions.

The governing body of FIFA has described soccer as a sport that cuts across every human boundary, from society, religion, socioeconomics, race, and ethnicity. Furthermore, over 30 million women play worldwide, with up to 5 million registered for a specific national association. Research has shown that there are still significant barriers to overcome to make the sport a secure career path for women.

Water Polo

What can easily be observed as soccer meets handball meets swimming, water polo is a competitive sport played in a deep pool of water between two teams. While incredibly fun, there are many reasons the sport is not as popular compared to others in the Olympics.

For one, the rules change frequently and are often gravely misunderstood, not only by audience members but even the referees, who fail to consistently officiate due to the fact that non-players can only observe the action taking place above the waterline.

Many times, legal behavior is being displayed in a visible view, while illegal behavior that violates the rules is taking place underwater. Calls are often uneven and capricious, despite the fact that the best referees are relatively consistent.

Handball

This sport is considered unpopular in many nations simply due to its lack of press coverage. Additionally, in comparison to others, handball is still a relatively new sport, with its first set of rules composed in 1906. Other variables, like corruption and sponsorships, play further parts in the lack of popularity.

Perhaps the worst part about the sport is the fact that it is simply not perceived well. It is not considered a primary sport for the majority of nations, even for Germany, its place of origin. However, this does not mean that game isn’t popular. Many kinds of sports are subject to political and historical influences.

The song comes amid daunting task for President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government to fulfill promises made to Malawians prior to June 20, 2020 Presidential Elections.

Egyptians celebrate Ramadan with traditional sweets

Many Egyptians marked the start of Ramadan on Saturday by flocking to shops to buy traditional Ramadan desserts.

Kunafa, qatayef and baklava have always been very popular desserts during the holy period and are a specialty in many households.

Today we went to pray in the mosques, finally the mosques opened, thank God that the mosques opened for women, we prayed Taraweeh, this is a very beautiful thing and before there was the feeling that we missed something, but now we feel Ramadan, and of course we went down to buy kunafa and qatayef. It is a Ramadan ritual, every Ramadan we must do it“, said local resident in Cairo, Reham Mohamed.

Traditional desserts are made using a mixture of flour, water and powdered milk. “Baladi kunafa is only available from year to year. There is a huge demand for it and you see the crowds buying it because people do not eat it except in Ramadan – qatayef, baladi and kunafa“, explained Om Yasmin, owner of Kunafa Qatayef shop.

Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic year when Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to dusk in an effort to renew their focus on spiritual, rather than material, matters.

South Sudan: Political rivals agree to form unified army

– –

In a move that could signal a significant approach towards ensuring a sustainable peace deal, South Sudan’s political rivals have now agreed to form a unified armed forces command.

Officials representing President Salva Kiir and his first Vice-President Riek Machar signed the deal on Sunday to fulfil a key pillar of 2018 peace agreement.

Major General Martin Abucha, who represented Mr Machar’s faction said “People of South Sudan are yearning for peace and peace is about security and today we have made a milestone in that. We have agreed that we shall be moving forward.”

“I want to call on my colleagues from the other sides that it is important to silence the guns so that South Sudan can prosper. Let there be no fighting, let there be no attacks,” he added.

Both President Kiir and vice president Machar looked on as the deal was signed.

– –

In the past fighters from both camps launch attacks on each other derailing efforts at lasting peace.

With this deal terms of integrating opposition commanders into the armed forces has been set out.

Factions belonging to President Kiir will have a 60% representation in key positions in the army, police and security forces.

That faction belonging to vice president Machar – the SPLM-IO and other opposition groups will occupy the remaining 40%.

– –

According to the deal the opposition is to submit the list of their commanders within a period of one week, to be followed by the graduation of the unified forces and their deployment – which should not exceed a period of two months.

It’s been two years since the rival political factions signed a peace deal that ushered in a unity government that was supposed to restore peace to the country.

Riek Machar and three other persons were sworn in as vice presidents at the time as part of the deal.

The formation of a unity government was seen as a major move that could definitively end years of fighting in the country.

That transitional government was to govern for three years and that mandate expires next year to make way for elections.

The East African body, Igad, has said that the peace deal signed in 2020 is facing challenges, including unresolved issues on the writing of a new constitution and preparations for fresh elections.

The body however hailed Sunday’s deal for a unified army command calling it “a major breakthrough”.

Hakainde Hichilema refuses payment

African Development Bank Group Vice Presidents and Director General on official visit to Botswana and Zimbabwe

A senior leadership team from the African Development Bank Group has arrived in the southern African capital Gabarone, on the first leg of an official visit to Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The delegation is led by Acting Vice President, Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery Yacine D. Fal. It includes Prof. Kevin Chika Urama, Acting Chief Economist and Vice President for the Economic Governance and Knowledge Management Complex; Director General for the Southern Africa region, Leila Mokaddem; Deputy Director General Kennedy Mbekeani, Martha Phiri, Director of the Bank’s Human Capital, Youth and Skills Department, and Jean-Guy Afrika, the African Development Bank’s Acting Director for the Regional Integration Coordination Office.

In Botswana from 4-5 April, the team will meet with several government and industry leaders, including the deputy minister of Finance Olesitse H. Masimega.  Their discussions will centre on the Bank’s support to Botswana’s economic transformation agenda and a post-Covid-19 economic recovery. The Bank has provided $137 million in loans to support Botswana’s economic recovery from the pandemic.

The delegation will also hold talks with the Southern African Development Community’s Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration, Dr. Thembinkosi Mhlongo. They will discuss areas of strategic interest to the SADC region, including the implementation of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), and the operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). SADC ‘s main objectives are to achieve development, security and economic growth, to alleviate poverty and support the socially disadvantaged of the southern Africa region through regional integration.

The visit underscores the African Development Bank’s firm commitment to the southern African region’s growth prospects and to deepen engagement with SADC at the strategic and technical levels, Fal said.

“We will take stock of ongoing regional integration efforts. We need to continue to encourage the free flow of goods and services across our borders, removal of tariff barriers and to scale up regional value chains,” Fal said.

The African Development Bank Group’s active portfolio in Botswana amounts to $223 million.  The portfolio is dominated by multi-sector projects which account for the largest segment.  Sixty-two percent of this falls under the Economic Recovery Support Program, 36.3% to financial support, with the rest financing the country’s agriculture, industrial and power sectors.

In Zimbabwe, from 5-8 April, the delegation will meet President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and other members of government. Talks will focus on Bank support to Zimbabwe’s arrears clearance. They team will also meet executives of the African Capacity Building Foundation, as well as private sector and various non-regional partners.
