Kenya: Youth climate activist highlights pollution on Lake Victoria

16-year-old Rahmina Paulette from Kenya is a climate activist. With fellow young activists, she takes to put to the forefront the issues of environmental pollution in Lake Victoria.

Paulette attended the COP26 United Nations climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland last November. Now her attention is turning to COP27 which will be held in Egypt later this year.

Today we are doing the global climate strike of where here in Kenya Kisumu we will be up-lifting one campaign which is ‘Let Lake Victoria Breathe Again’ and we will be having also another campaign called ‘Food at COP’ which is aiming at promoting indigenous vegetable to be served at COP 27. We are having the narrative which is people, not profit, which is basically taking care of the human health at the same time providing environmental solutions and not looking towards economic benefits,” she says.

Tom Ogallo, another local climate change activist says they are protesting to highlight the issues of environmental pollution and climate change.

We young people are not pleased at all by the situation in our lake. We young people are not pleased at all by the climatic change that is happening in our country. We young people, we are calling upon other young people to join us in this particular action so that we can be able to have a quality environment.

Environmental campaign

Paulette’s campaign called “Let Lake Victoria Breathe Again” focuses on the negative impacts of pollution and rising temperatures on the environment around the lake.

Paulette has been at the forefront of fighting against the pollution of Lake Victoria and founded a project that uses invasive water hyacinth to make a wide range of products like tables, chairs, baskets and table mats.

Water hyacinth has engulfed Lake Victoria and negatively impacted its ecosystem by preventing aquatic life from getting adequate sunlight.

Transforming the invasive plant into something useful means that valuable land is preserved she say : “So, by this, we are also conserving the lands and not involving in ecological footprints and that is why we are coming up with more innovations that could lead towards alternative solutions towards the ecosystem.”

Paulette helps with local plastic recycling by organizing regular cleaning activities on the shores of Lake Victoria. Plastics are collected and taken to recycling plants thus ensuring a cleaner environment and creating employment opportunities for local people who transform the waste into useful items.

The team at Manyatta Precious Plastics uses waste plastic to create an array of household items like vases, bowls and jewellery. Alicia Moraa Ontita, Project Manager at Manyatta Precious Plastics says that the scheme also tackles unemployment.

Research says by 2050, we will be having more plastics than fish in our water bodies. So, really to stop this from happening and also things to do with climate change we had to start plastic recycling and you know we also needed to create a source of livelihood for the youths within this locality,” she explains.

Need for political action

A recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that nearly half the world’s population already faces significant risk from global warming. Its findings have prompted strong reaction from officials, scientists and climate activists, and calls for governments to step up ahead of this year’s U.N. climate conference, known as COP27.

Paulette hopes that the Egypt meeting will create mechanisms that ensure more action towards tackling climate change. In the 2021 summit, almost 200 nations accepted a compromise deal, which outside experts said showed progress, but not success.

That deal didn’t achieve any of the three UN goals: Pledges that would cut world carbon dioxide emissions by about half, 100 billion US dollars in yearly climate aid from rich countries to poor ones, with half that money going to help the developing world adapt to the harms of a warming world.

The Glasgow Climate Pact included enough financial incentives to almost satisfy poorer nations and solved a long-standing problem to pave the way for carbon trading. “For COP 26 I didn’t see much success apart from that Kenya, Gabon, and South Africa were able to negotiate on the climate finance.” says Paulette.

Yassmin Fouad Abdelaziz, Egypt’s environment minister, said at the end of the Glasgow summit that COP27, to be held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, would focus on aid and compensation for poor countries. The Glasgow agreement also says big carbon polluting nations have to come back and submit stronger emission cutting pledges by the end of 2022.

Negotiators said the deal preserved, albeit barely, the overarching goal of limiting Earth’s warming by the end of the century to 1.5 degrees. The planet has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to pre industrial times.

Vice President Osinbajo’s Presidential Declaration Speech By Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo

Fellow Nigerians, a few moments ago, I met with President Muhammadu Buhari. I informed him that I wanted to succeed him as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Though it is not my life-long ambition, it has become imperative that to rescue Nigeria, we need someone to build on the achievements of President Buhari. I have looked around; I do not see anyone better suited to carry on that solemn assignment than my humble self.
As a great father of the nation, which Buhari is, he wished me well.
I took this bold step after a wide-ranging consultation with Nigerians of various ethnic, religious, and economic hues. I listened to market women and men, I sat down with the young and old, I heard from students and intellectuals, I broke bread with the unemployed and the underemployed, I accepted the counsel of traditional rulers and kingmakers across Nigeria, and more importantly, I weighed in the opinion of my wife and children. All the signals that I got were positive. Go PYO.
Unlike all those who want to rule you as their subjects, I offer myself to serve our great country, Nigeria, with utmost humility. Growing up in Lagos, I did not know that I would be where I am today – one heartbeat away from the presidency of this great country. Having been here, having seen all parts of Nigeria from a close range, having worked beside a great but humble leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for almost seven years now, having interacted with leaders at federal, state, and local government levels, I have a burning desire in me to continue with Buhari’s master-plan for Nigeria.
The masterplan may not be clear to some of you, my compatriots, but there is a masterplan coming together. The worldwide economic downturn, COVID-19 pandemic, and decades of lack of investments in Nigerian infrastructure may have blurred what President Buhari has achieved. But trust me, he has taken Nigeria to a new height. Though you may not feel it, you may not honestly say that you are better off today than you were in 2015, but believe me, in things that matter most, values and sincere leadership, our country is in a better place.
My fellow Nigerians, trust me when I say that no matter how dark it looks, we are on the right path. The temporary disruptions that we see today, the blurriness caused by the dust in the air should not blind us to the long time gains of our investments of this day. I share in your pains of this day of cultivation. Inshallah, we shall all smile soon as harvest time comes.
The Nigeria of 2015 was an active erosion site, swallowing homes, roads, and farmlands. What we have done is to channel the floodwater away from the site. Though the gullies are still collapsing and expanding at some places, fundamentally, we have plucked the remote causes. I seek the presidency to begin the next level of the project, which is to fill up the gullies, recover our once lost land and begin reconstruction. In my time as president, you will see mansions rising in our fatherland once overrun by ugly gullies.

I have looked around the field of those aspiring to be president. Though they may be honorable men and women in their own right, none of them has what it takes to complete the job that President Buhari started. This is not the time to bring in people who were not there when the corpse was buried and have them start digging from the legs.
Those of you who watched with amazement what I accomplished in those few days that President Buhari handed power to me can attest that if I get only four years to be the steward of this great nation, I will turn Nigeria into what Ronald Reagan called “a shining city on a hill.”

As we know, some people are born corrupt. Some people have corruption swimming all around them. I am clothed in a bright gown of integrity. Integrity is modest, integrity is humble and integrity never fails to accomplish and excel. I never have and will never steal from the Nigerian people. Those who steal are greedy. Period. They never change. Please do not believe them when they say they are born-again.
I am vast in the rudiments of nation-building and sustainable economic growth. When I come into my own as president, that skill set will make all the difference. It helps that more than all the pretenders in the political arena, I am hardworking, I am committed to my stated goals and I am determined to rise above all my enemies and my competitors. My vision for Nigeria is clear and simple. I want Nigeria that is great but just, prosperous but fair and progressive but united. Justice, fairness and unity are very close to my heart.
I have never cheated to be where I am in life. We are where we are as a nation because we have allowed some people to cheat and steal their ways to what we call success. I made myself what I am today by converting challenges into opportunities. That is the philosophy that I will bring to my presidency. I will deploy this philosophy to lure back our compatriots who have lost faith in the Nigerian project. They will give Nigeria a second chance when they see my sincerity of purpose.
I understand the internal factors dragging down the economy of Nigeria. I have the foreign and nationwide connections that I need to speed up the economic renaissance of our nation. When it comes to security concerns, I will take decisive actions to quell the lingering security problems across Nigeria. As someone close to the beaming youth of this nation, I know how to inspire them to deploy their restless energy into productive ventures. I have done it on tiny scales in line with my limited portfolio as vice president. As president, I will multiply my effort by 100 million folds.
Those who know me well will tell you that I am like water. I have no enemy. I will carry every part of the country along in the journey of Nigeria’s emancipation. Yes, that is what PYO stands for – total and final emancipation of Nigeria. We are all children of God, and the God that I serve does not discriminate. I firmly believe that what is good for my children must be extended to the children of the lowest citizen of our country.
I believe now is the time to reverse this current system where we leave a great majority of our people to wait for crumbs to trickle down to them from the table of the rich and mighty. When I am president, I will ensure that the least amongst us have the first choice before the mighty. Having run “TraderMoni” and school feeding program, having worked with young entrepreneurs starting a business, I know the potential in them. I will not let that potential go to waste anymore.
I know what most of you are waiting to hear. What about my great friend and benefactor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (aka BAT)? As you all know, I have tremendous respect for Asiwaju, Jagaban Borgu. But in matters of the fate of 200 million Nigerians, we cannot afford to let emotions rule us. The situation of Nigeria today is so critical. We need a healthy, vibrant, and untainted leader to handle the situation, now that we still can.
The same goes for other aspirants from all the other political parties. We have no room to play around anymore. We have no space for people who will learn on the job. We have no patience for those carrying a truckload of toxic baggage. The urgency of our situation is palpable.
For this and other reasons, I offer myself to serve our great nation by declaring my interest in running for president. It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve you all.
May God bless you all. And may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Togoville jazz festival paid tribute to African women

The 8th edition of the Togoville jazz festival has ended after hosting more than 30 concerts over two weeks, featuring artists from Lomé to Agbodrafo and of course Togoville.

The forum has become essential for musicians and groups from all over Togo but also from Africa and even Europe.

This year the organisers paid tribute to women in Jazz such as the Beninese star Angelique Kidjo.

On stage, the Togolese singer Sabine Kouli chose to be accompanied by a new generation of musicians.

“It something very strong because there is this mixture between their attraction for jazz music and also for African music,” saidKouli.

“So there is a kind of synergy between these two musical styles which enrich and really bring something new. I think that these Togolese youth who are growing up in the footsteps of great jazz artists will be able to offer the world something quite unique.”

Drummer, percussionist and composer, Kossi Mawun is considered one of the most promising of this new generation of Togolese jazzmen.

He explains: “I mixed the rhythms of Togo with harmonies to give another colour of jazz. The melodies come into my head while walking in the street, I take my cell phone and I record the melody.”

The highlight of the festival was the performance of Manou Gallo, an Ivorian bassist and vocalist, who has long been fighting to be accepted on the continental scene as well as campaigning for equal opportunities for women in West African music.

“Instruments since the dawn of time have been reserved for men. We tend to say that the African woman is only good for making children and staying at home. So yes, I want to show another image of this African woman who remains a strong and free woman,” said Gallo.

Togoville Jazz is now preparing for its next edition in March 2023.

The African Development Bank will co-host four events on the side-lines of the first-ever edition of the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 28-31 March.

Middle East and North Africa Climate Week is hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates and jointly co-organized by the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Environment Programme, the World Bank Group and MENA-based partners. The meetings aim to accelerate collaboration and integrate climate action into the global pandemic recovery.

With the Islamic Development Bank, the African Development Bank will host Nature Based-Solutions and Nature Derived-Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in the Middle East and North Africa region from 13:45-15:45 GMT+4. The session will take place at Atlantis, The Palm – Silk C.

Through case studies it will highlight the role of nature-based solutions and nature-derived solutions in adaptation and mitigation efforts, stressing challenges and opportunities in the scale up of such solutions in the Bank’s operations. It will also illustrate country best practices, with a focus on members of both Multilateral Development Banks.

Also with the Islamic Development Bank, the African Development Bank will host A Green Finance Facilities Ecosystem: a $3tn opportunity for Africa from 15:00-16:00 GMT+4. The webinar, which will take place virtually and at Atlantis, The Palm – Spice B, will explore the role that green financial facilities and green banks play in using public funds to leverage far greater private investment in support of local bankable sustainable projects. This session will present how these financial institutions provide an innovative solution that will fill the climate and environment investment gaps for Africa.

A third event hosted with Islamic Development Bank, The Role of Sustainable Finance Market in Transition to a Green Resilient Future, will take place at Atlantic, the Palm, also from 15:00-16:00 GMT+4

Unanticipated impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to competition for limited financial resources especially for green investments and development projects. As countries aim to build back better in a manner that is robust and resilient, the challenges of finance mobilization remain.
In many markets, the sustainable finance market is helping to diversify the asset pool for various investors and increase their offerings beyond traditional financing to more impactful and sustainable investments. In addition, sustainable financing instruments including social bonds, green bonds, green banks, are continuing to provide financial solutions to address environmental and social challenges in member countries while expanding the role of these financial instruments in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The session will explore the role of the sustainable finance market in bridging the financing gap and how green finance products can help economies build back better to achieve a robust and resilient post-Covid-19 future.

With Glasgow Caledonia University, the African Development Bank will organize Fairness and Justice in Advancing Climate Finance for Adaptation & Resilience from 16:15 to 17.15 GMT+4 at Atlantis, the Palm –  Spice A – Room A Davos 6.

Building the resilience of women and girls to cope with a changing climate requires climate finance to be directed to support their adaptation needs now rather than what is currently commonplace: reactively directing investment to climate disasters as and after they happen.

The event will shine a spotlight on how climate finance can and must be enabled in terms of investing in people, supporting their wants, desires and aspirations, including mental health and wellbeing needs, so they can lead and contribute to economically strong households capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change and other disasters.
