ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)—The opposition Peoples Party (PP) has indefinitely suspended its Zomba Ntonya lawmaker Patrick Makina for his working relationship with the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).Ken Msonda, PP’s Spokesperson confirmed to The Maravi Post on Monday that Makina was indeed suspended for working closely with DPP which contravenes the party’s constitution and that the lawmaker is expected to appear before their disciplinary committee.

Makina’s suspension comes following a request from the party’s district and constituency committee asking the party leadership to discipline him for working with DPP in that constituency.

“Yes, I can confirm that Hon Dr. Patrick Makina MP has been suspended as Peoples Party (PP) member and Member of Parliament (MP) for Zomba Ntonya Constituency with immediate effect  (July 2, 2016) pending his appearance before the party’s disciplinary committee. He will be summoned for hearing soon.

“The party has taken this painful decision to save the image of the party in Zomba Ntonya Constituency. His suspension is to do with his working relationship with party leaders in Zomba Ntonya Constituency; I cannot comment much until the disciplinary committee meets.

“I would like to remind our party members in leadership positions that the party has rules and regulations to be followed and that once elected to positions of leadership. We should not forget to work with the party grassroots who elected us,” warns Msonda.

The Maravi Posts effort to seek Makina’s side of the story proved futile as his mobile phone was out of reach after several attempts. But the legislator is on record saying that he remains loyal to the orange camp.

The former governing Peoples Party has been marred with leadership crisis since its President Joyce Banda imposed herself into exile soon after the 2014 Tripartite Elections. Even some party gurus have called for early convention as remedy for resolving wrangles rocking the party ahead of 2019 elections.
