Uladi Musa aka “Chenji Golo”: The ever-elusive Malawi’s political prostitute

By Twink Jones Gadama

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Uladi Musa aka Chenji Golo, is a name that resonates within the political sphere of Malawi. Once an influential figure within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), he has now defected to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

This move comes as no surprise, as Musa has become notorious for his ability to switch political affiliations whenever it suits his interests. However, his checkered past may hinder his ambitions to contest for a parliamentary seat.

The Rise and Fall of Uladi Musa

Uladi Musa’s political journey has been one characterized by ups and downs, with scandal and controversy never too far behind.

A former Minister in the DPP-led government, Musa was initially seen as a rising star, with his charisma and political acumen winning over both supporters and fellow party members. However, as time went on, his true nature as a “recycled politician” began to emerge.

The Pardon and Its Consequences

Musa’s reputation took a significant hit when he was convicted and sentenced. However, his political connections seemed to have spared him from serving out his full sentence, as he was eventually granted a presidential pardon.

Ineligibility for a Parliamentary Seat

Under the laws of Malawi, Musa is currently ineligible to contest for a parliamentary seat due to his criminal conviction.

The legislation stipulates that individuals convicted of certain offenses must wait for a designated period, in this case, 7 years, before being allowed to participate in the electoral process.

This means that if Musa wishes to pursue his political aspirations, he must bide his time and wait for the clock to tick away.

A Diminished Political Force

While Musa may have once been a force to be reckoned with, his political influence has significantly waned over the years. The repeated switches in his political affiliation have eroded public trust in his leadership abilities.

Nowadays, his name is often met with apathy rather than enthusiasm, with many questioning his true intentions and commitment to the welfare of the people.

A Democratic Right of Association

Despite his tarnished reputation, Auladi Mussa has exercised his democratic right of association by joining the MCP, with open arms and a warm welcome extended by President Lazarus Chakwera himself.

This move has inevitably sparked debate and discussion among the political terrain with some dubbing it a mere opportunistic maneuver, while others argue that individuals deserve a chance at redemption and second chances.

The Chameleon’s Shifting Loyalties

Musa’s ability to switch political allegiances at will earned him the nickname “Change Goal.” and he enjoys the name as it defines him truly.

His first major shift occurred following the death of former President Bingu wa Mutharika, prompting Mussa to abandon the DPP and seek refuge in the People’s Party of Joyce Banda.

However, his time with the People’s Party was short-lived, as he was swiftly expelled, showcasing his constantly evolving political landscape.

Conclusion

Uladi Musa’s political journey has been one fraught with controversy, scandal, and questionable decisions. While he may have once held sway within the ranks of the DPP, his reputation as a “recycled politician” and his ongoing legal troubles have severely hampered his standing.

As he looks to rebuild his political career within the MCP, only time will tell if Musa can truly shed his chameleon-like past and regain the trust of the people.

My Take On It: A snapshot of Malawi’s leaders in 57 years of independent rule, Part III

3 “Therefore, brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. – Acts6:3

In its 57 years of independent rule, Malawi has had six presidents and eight vice presidents. The role of vice president is a recent phenomenon, and understandably, Malawians both in the leadership ranks and the lower rungs of society, know precious little nor do they care to learn how to wade the problem-solving waters, when the leader and his/her vice are entangled in an unavoidable dispute.

The institution of the vice presidency is entrenched in our constitution; it is incumbent for all Malawians to embrace the office of the VP, work with it, and to assist it, as opposed to rising up storms of fanciful discord.

For 30 years, former President Kamuzu Banda single-handedly ruled Malawi, without a vice president; in his waning years, he agreed to take on a vice president. Malawians warmed up to former convict Ganda Chakuamba. While Chakuamba left office in 1994 along with Kamuzu, his stay in the Malawi Congress Party was cut short by internal squabbles. He left to establish the New Republican Party. Hence Chakuamba was the first victim of Malawi’s abhorrence of vice presidents.

The next vice president was the soft-spoken Justine Malewezi was the second victim. A highly professional administrator and a good steward. Despite the open disrespect from his boss Muluzi, something about the number of medication and his kidney transplant, Malewezi soldiered on, patiently and quietly waited out for his term of office to end.

The third victim was Cassim Chilumpha. Malawians sent Cassim to prison for plotting to assassinate his boss, Bingu wa Mutharika.

Next in line was Joyce Banda. She was Bingu’s VP in his second term. The chemistry seemed great, the optics in place; the Malawi women turned out in large numbers to vote for the picturesque duo as Malawi sailed down history boulevard toward having its first female president. But as soon as Banda got into her VP role, creating structures to enable her to fulfill her passion of lifting the standards of women and girls, she was whisked away to the back burner. Bingu was grooming his younger brother, Peter, to be the next president.

So on the back burner, Joyce Banda waited as Malewezi had done. There she waited until fate stepped in. On April 5, 2012, Malawi leader Bingu wa Mutharika suffered a massive heart attack and died. A few very tumultuous days passed in a wrangle for power, as Peter and his followers sought to find ways to prevent Joyce Banda from being installed president, to have instead Peter Mutharika.

Banda chose Kachale as her vice president. The relationship lasted to the end, but it was not smooth sailing, and only lasted two years. Banda failed to win the 2014 elections against Mutharika and Chilima. On his part, Mutharika spent much of his time scheming ways and means of throwing Joyce Banda in prison for the IFMIS, the accounting system,

Like Joyce Banda had been for Mutharika, Saulos Chilima was the tipping ingredient in Mutharika’s campaign. Joyce brought in the women; Saulos brought in the youth. Women and youth are plenteous in Malawi.

Tribalism played a major role in slicing asunder the Mutharika/Chilima magic. And like Malewezi and Banda before him, Chilima waited out his term of office to 2020. He was so vastly popular, like Banda before him, he formed his political party (UTM) while he was still vice president to Mutharika.

As Chilima campaigned under the UTM ticket, Mutharika chose Chimulilenji as his vice president. He served for a few months before the court order for fresh elections. In the fresh elections, Mutharika gambled away Chimulilenji, opting instead to have Muluzi; a mechanism to get more votes. It didn’t work.

The Chakwera/Chilima ticket was a well-crafted one that attracted nine other parties. The new dynamic duo whisked the Tonse Alliance to the State House. And for the first time, the vice president has a ministry to oversee; he is also in charge of the civil service reform process.

But barely a year in power, the buzzword spread wildly about discontent, nepotism, regionalism, non-consultative mature of things, and a host of other isms. Many soothsayers are predicted the alliance will disintegrate, others threaten they will not vote Alliance.

The experiences that Malawi vice presidents have had to endure in the past 25 years, at the hands of the president in power, or the local people, being a vice president is ominous and daunting. Either an act of parliament, or a decree that clearly spelled out the role of the vice president. The one thing that must be clearly scripted should be “you were elected as one; you must leave as one.” The world is watching,

UITM, PP, AFORD, Tikonze electoral alliance deal sealed

UITM, PP, AFORD, Tikonze electoral alliance deal sealed

By Nenenji Mlangeni

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)– As earlier reported today, Friday, February 1, that party leaders of four political parties taking part in the May 21 tripartite elections were behind closed doors stretching out a coalition to unseat incumbent DPP President Peter Mutharika, finally the deal has been sealed.

“As you are aware, 21 May is fast approaching. The political arena is heated up now. In view of this I would like to announce that I have reversed my decision to compete for the presidency of this country on 21 May, 2019. Furthermore, more let me take this opportunity to announce that Tikonze Alliance has decided to Partner with the United Transformation Movement.

He adds, “An official communication will be made within the next 48 hours to all relevant stakeholders including the media. Exhaustive details of the political arrangement going forward shall be made available through the said communication.

“In the absence of that official communication, members of the media are asked to bear with us as we cannot divulge any information that has not been authorized by the national executive committee and our working partners”.

Meanwhile it is not known as to who will be the Vice President of the alleged coalition particularly for a runningmate for May 21 polls..

DPP ropes in Zomba PP MP, Mayor

By Special Absalom

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Graizider Jeffrey has told party officials to avoid resisting  many  new members who are joining the party from Peoples Party (PP), saying they have a role to strengthen the  party.

Jeffrey said this Friday in Zomba where she welcomed into the party Zomba Central MP Patricia Kainga Nangozo and Zomba City mayor Christopher Jana.

“New members are still needed in the party although we know for sure that we are forming the next government again,” she said.

She advised the old members to work closely with the new membersand advised the new members to always work with DPP structures not working in isolation.

This comes amid resistance by some members of the DPP who say the new members are bringing confusion in the party.

Both Nangozo and Jana pledged to work hard to ensure that the DPP remainin government after the 2019 elections.

They said they decided to join the DPP because they were enticed by the leadership of President Peter Mutharika and his development agenda for the nation.

Malawi former leader JB talks decent Housing

By Arnold Mnelemba

Former Head of state and People’s Party, PP, leader Dr. Joyce Banda says programs that target the poor are the only recipe for social economic transformation of the country.

She was speaking in Mzimba when she addressed a political rally.

Before the rally, the former Malawi leader, visited the Mudzi Transformation Trust Houses, Khosolo Cluster.

When the former leader took over government in 2012, she focused on 5 key set priorities under the Economic Recovery Plan, ERP, as a short term measure to address numerous social economic challenges that engulfed the country.

Infrastructure development, tourism, health, agriculture and food security energy and mining, as well as sustainable economic growth were some of the set key priorities.

She has always emphasized on the need for decent and affordable housing, hence the introduction of Mudzi Transformation Trust.

Banda said a decent housing for people, provision of social amenities including portable water, equitable and accessible health and education service delivery as well as good sanitation services is key to the country’s social economic transformation.

She has constructed houses for the poor and the needy in a quest to bridge the gap that exist between the rich and the poor.

She has since challenged that she will continue with the program of helping the needy in provision of decent housing.

She told old friends she visited in Khonsolo that the heart to help the needy is in born and ought to be an attribute of any caring leader.

On agriculture, Dr. Banda said she will introduce universal farm input program that will replace the current targeted program.

The People’s Party President hinted on the need for introduction of universal Farm Input Program, saying this will help to address numerous challenges that have characterized the targeted FISP.

She said the current program has so many gaps that needs to be filled as it has only helped in creating hatred amongst people due to limited number of targeted beneficiaries.

On education, Dr. Banda said provision of quality services in education such as school blocks, teaching and learning materials, teachers houses, girls hostels, training of teachers and improvement of their social welfare is the only way that will help revive the dwindling education standards.

She said quota system would not be there if there is enough space to accommodate all in the government institutions of higher learning.

She has since called upon government to start using the withholding shelters that were constructed for use of pregnant women in some hospitals, but have not been functional since she left government.

Talking about economic transformation, Dr. Banda said potential investors would not be interested to invest in a country with no reliable energy generation.

She said the power outages the country is facing are only scaring away potential investors.

Banda said she has the key to turn around the tables in as far as power and energy generation is concerned.

She said blackouts would be water under the bridge if given an opportunity to rule the country again.

The former leader is expected to attend a dinner in her honour at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe before addressing a mass rally at Masintha ground.

BREAKING NEWS: Uladi Mussa fired as PP Acting President

Controversial Peoples Party (PP) Acting President Uladi Mussa was fired from his position ?on Friday afternoon?, Maravi Post has been reliably informed.

The PP National Executive Committee (NEC), made the decision in Lilongwe, a day after Mussa declared himself as the Party’s President, assumably replacing the founder of the Party Dr. Joyce Banda.

Mussa told members of the press that his declaration was according to the Party’s Constitution and that Banda’s tenure had expired.

Confirming Mussa’s suspension, PP spokesperson Noah Chimpeni said
Mussa contravened the Constitution of the Party, hence the decision to fire him.

Chipeni said the matter is under a disciplinary hearing in 10 days’ time, while Mussa remains the Party’s Vice President for central region.

The PP spokesperson did not disclosed whether the NEC named a replacement on Mussa’s position; he only said “the NEC did not reach that far, but remember we already have Acting Vice President.”

Efforts to contact Mussa proved futile as he did not pick up his mobile phone.

William Mkandawire
