CHITIPA (MaraviPost)–Pregnant women in Malawi’s northern district of Chitipa have asked government to start recruiting more male midwives in public hospitals in order to create a conducive environment for expectant mothers.

The call was made yesterday during the meeting in the district which was organized with the aim of strengthening the relationship between the two parties.
Speaking during the meeting, Lucy Sulumbu said they are always mistreated by female midwives especially when attending the medical checkup.
“As one of pregnant women in the district, I want to commend the organizers of this meeting especially because we know that it will change a lot of things we meet in our day to day visit to the hospital,” said Sulumbu.
“Without hiding, there are a lot of things affecting us and the most outstanding issue is the bad treatment we receive from female midwives,” she added.
According to them, they feel comfortable only when they met with male midwives.
Sulumbu disclosed that the development is making women in the areas to consult traditional birth attendance who are inexperienced thereby increasing maternal and neonatal death.
In his remarks, George Nkhoma one of the health officials at the district hospital asked pregnant
women to continue consulting the hospital.
While failing to respond to the call, Nkhoma said “this should not make you stop going to the hospital but we shall talk with the female midwives.”
Meanwhile, issues of maternal and neonatal deaths continue to increase in the district.
