KINSHASA-(MaraviPost)-Tensions boiled over in Kinshasa on Tuesday night after the Democratic Republic of Congo suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Senegal in a crucial World Cup qualifier.
The loss which dented DR Congo’s chances of advancing sparked chaos inside the stadium as frustrated home fans turned violent.
Moments after the final whistle a section of Congolese supporters began ripping off stadium seats and hurling them onto the pitch, narrowly missing players and match officials.
Security forces were quickly deployed to control the situation firing warning shots into the air and using tear gas to disperse the angry crowd.
Families and children scrambled for safety while others clashed with police.
Several fans sustained minor injuries in the stampede though authorities are yet to release an official figure.
The match itself was a thriller. DR Congo twice came from behind but a late goal from Senegal’s Sadio Mané sealed the victory for the visitors.
The result leaves DR Congo in a position two in group B with 16 point from 8 games in the qualifiers with just two games remaining to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
DR Congo’s football federation (FECOFA) condemned the violence in a statement issued hours after the match warning that such behavior could lead to heavy sanctions from CAF and FIFA including fines and potential bans on hosting international matches.
“We understand the frustration but destroying infrastructure and endangering lives is unacceptable.
“We will work closely with security agencies to identify the perpetrators and ensure they face the full force of the law,” part of statement.
Senegal coach Aliou Cissé expressed concern for his players, saying they were “lucky to escape unharmed.” DR Congo’s head coach Sébastien Desabre urged fans to remain calm, emphasizing that the team still has a mathematical chance to qualify.
Meanwhile CAF officials are expected to review the match report and may impose penalties on DR Congo in the coming days.
