ECOWAS leaders meet in Accra over political situation in Mali

– –

ECOWAS leaders are meeting in Ghana’s capital, Accra to discuss the political situation in Mali, after the ruling military junta there said it cannot hold elections next month.

Mali’s military leaders carried out a coup in August 2020, deposing then president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

A transition team led by the military has been ruling the country since then and was given a deadline of February 2022 to hold fresh elections.

But the military junta headed by current President Assimi Goita has now proposed holding elections only in five years time – 2026.

The transitional government said the delay in holding elections is due to state of insecurity in Mali, making it impossible to hold elections this year.

– –

Islamist militants have been wrecking havoc in Mali and the situation has now been compounded by the withdrawal of French troops from parts of the country.

A coalition of major political parties in Mali has already released a letter rejecting the five-year plan by the soldiers.

The spokesperson for the coalition, Amadou Koita, said that the grouping is calling on current military leaders to respect the transition charter.

“Those who want to be in power should be candidates and submit to the will of the people. We are a democracy, we are in a country where we have rights, we are a republic. Let’s respect the law,” Koita is quoted by VOA as saying.

– –

The military leaders are already under sanctions from ECOWAS but are unperturbed refusing to comply with deadlines given them.

Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan – who heads a delegation of Ecowas mediators in Mali met with Interim President Goita on the issue.

Jonathan had said that an extension to the transitional deadline would not be acceptable.

Chair of ECOWAS, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo visited Mali this week ahead of Sunday’s meeting in Accra.

The summit in Accra is expected to discuss the new timetable provided by Mali’s military leaders amid reports of possible sanctions or postponement to earlier timetable.

Ghana: NIB compensates ex-worker for demotion, ill-treatment

– –

The National Investment Bank (NIB) in Ghana has paid 12 months Basic Salary as compensation for the demotion and I’ll treatment of its former Head of Human Resources, Senyo M. Adjabeng.

The payment followed the 2021 ruling of the National Labour Commission after a complaint filed by Mr. Adjabeng against the Bank in 2017.

In its ruling, the NLC held that “the removal of the Complainant as Head of Human Resource of respondent bank and reassignment to Manager, Performance Development and Training, reduction of remuneration by GHc1,000 per month, change in reporting line from reporting to the new occupant of his former office instead of the Managing Director and retrieval of Complainant’s official vehicle constitute demotion and ill-treatment.”

The NLC further held that “the query was not conducted in line with the HR Policy of the Bank and amounts to ill-treatment.”

The NLC concluded that “commulatively and conclusively, the ill-treatment of the Complainant amounts to Unfair termination” and ordered the payment of 12 months salary as compensation to the complainant.

– –

Reacting to the ruling, Senyo M. Adjabeng thanked the current management of the Bank for honouring the NLC ruling, and reminded all employers to always act fairly and within the ambits of law and procedure when dealing with their employees.

UNESCO names Ghana’s Accra as World Book Capital for 2023

– –

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named Ghana’s capital, Accra as its World Book Capital for 2023.

The West African nation will host the World Book Capital after Mexico’s Guadalajara in 2022.

In a statement UNESCO said “the city of Accra was selected for its strong focus on young people and their potential to contribute to the culture and wealth of Ghana.”

It said picking Accra was because of its proposed programme that “seeks to use the power of books to engage these young people, as an effective way of skilling up the next generation.”

Accra also proposed to the World Book Capital Advisory Committee that selected it that it has a broad programme that targets marginal groups with high levels of illiteracy including women, youth, migrants, street children and persons with disabilities.

– –

“Measures to be implemented include the reinforcing of school and community infrastructure and institutional support for lifelong learning, in order to foster the culture of reading. By championing the publishing sector and other creative industries, the programme also aims to encourage professional skills development to stimulate the country’s socio-economic transformation,” UNESCO said about Accra’s proposals.

During the hosting of the World Book Capital, Accra will also organize activities such as “mobile libraries to reach marginalized groups, the holding of workshops to promote reading and writing of books in different Ghanaian languages, the establishment of skills and training centres for unemployed youth and the organization of competitions to showcase Ghanaian arts and culture and promote inclusivity.”

The statement from UNESCO highlighted that the application from Accra also includes “a strong human rights dimension, which aims to raise public awareness about freedom of information and expression, building on its own promotion of these rights as well as its involvement in World Press Freedom Day.”

The year of celebrations will start on 23 April 2023, on World Book and Copyright Day.

– –

Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital undertake to promote books and reading for all ages and population groups, within and across national borders, and to organize a programme of activities for the year.

Ghanaians call for their country to be fixed with a street protest

– –

Thousands of Ghanaians mainly young people on Wednesday staged a street protest, demonstrating over the state of the country’s economy and general state of development.

What started as a social media campaign months ago with the hashtag #Fixthecountry, has now become a major movement led by young people.

Wednesday’s protest lasted for over four hours with protesters holding placards that read “dishonesty and lack of patriotism gave us year of no return”, “Ghana is most religious but most corrupt country” among others.

One protester told Africa Feeds that the problem in “is corruption. I spoke of nepotism, when politicians come to power, they put people who are capable into power rather they put their family members into power.

This cannot happen. As we are talking now, Ghana has over 5,403 schools under trees in this 21st century and now we are going for loans to buy cars for MPs in parliament.”

– –

“All the time the politicians will tell us for the youth you have to be entrepreneur, you have to garner the entrepreneurial skills, more over as aged as they are 70 years, 75 year old people they would be looking for appointments in government portfolios,” another protester said.

The protesters are demanding for better governance and want the government to create jobs for the youth, end corruption, provide basic essential social amenities as well as an efficient and effective health care system.

Issues related to the state of education and lack of quality infrastructure in the area of roads among others are key on the list of demands by these young people.

The protest and its impact has been trending on social media as well.

– –

The young people now want to replicate Wednesday’s protest across the country in other regions and communities.

“The youth of Ghana have come out in their thousands. Absolutely incredible. This is a show of power that has never been seen in this country. The next stage in all of this is to move out of Accra and go into the communities, and go into the regions.

This is going to be a national campaign that will completely transform this country in favor of young people,” Hady Yakubu, one of the protest leaders told Africa Feeds.

It is yet to be seen how the political leaders of Ghana will react to these concerns from the protesters.

Prior to that discovery, tonnes of large species of fish have also been spotted in Osu in the capital Accra and Keta in the Volta Region.

Dead dolphins
Residents along the coast are reportedly picking up the dolphins for sale.

Reports say the Environmental Protection officers are also having a tough time preventing members of the public from consuming the fish or having close contacts with them.

At Axim-Bewire, in the Western Region, all 60 dolphins have gone missing from the shore, since the processed dolphin is said to attract very high price in the market.

The Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service and the Fisheries Commission are also collaborating to prevent consumption of the dead fishes following suspicious that some have already found their way into the market.

– –

In a statement the government’s fisheries ministry said “Initial observation of the fishes showed no wound /lesions on their bodies.

It is to be noted that after two to three days of death of an animal pathological signs change. Samples of the fish were collected on ice to be examined critically in the laboratory.”

There have been reports of possible oil spillage but the statement said “The seawater samples collected will be analysed for physical, chemical and other biological parameters.

The colour of the sea and temperature are normal. We assure everyone that we are working hard to ascertain the actual cause of mortality of the fish.”
